This document discusses thermal microactuators used in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). There are four main types of actuators used for micro device motion: thermal forces, shape memory alloys, piezoelectric crystals, and electrostatic forces. Thermal microactuators are standard components that can be powered electrically or optically and are used in applications like optical switches and nano-positioners. Examples of thermal actuator designs discussed include bimaterial, bent-beam, and flexure actuators. Surface micromachining and silicon-on-insulator techniques are used to fabricate thermal microactuators.
