The document discusses two tests used to measure the workability of concrete: the slump test and VEBE test. The slump test measures how much a sample of freshly mixed concrete sags or "slumps" due to gravity. The VEBE test also measures workability but uses vibration and timing to determine how long it takes for the sample to be remolded by the vibration. Both tests are affected by the amount of water in the concrete mix, with too much or too little water impacting the workability. The slump test is commonly used in the field while the VEBE test is better for dry mixes but less practical for field use.
Properties of Fresh and Hardened ConcreteRishabh Lala
1. The document discusses the properties of fresh and hardened concrete, including workability, strength, permeability, and durability.
2. Workability of fresh concrete refers to the effort required to mix and place the concrete without segregation. It is measured by tests like slump.
3. Compressive strength is an important property of hardened concrete, as concrete is designed to resist compressive loads. Strength depends on factors like water-cement ratio and compaction.
4. Permeability and durability are also important properties, as permeability affects how easily substances like water or salts can pass through concrete. Low permeability leads to higher durability.

Hydraulic mining uses high-pressure water jets to break up soft rock and minerals and transport them away as slurries. It is particularly useful for extracting precious stones where explosives could damage them. The cutting rate depends on water pressure, flow rate, and nozzle design. After breaking the rock, the slurry is piped long distances in some cases. Hydraulic mining is productive, economical, and safer than conventional mining methods. It has potential applications for extracting many types of soft rocks and minerals.
Aggregates make up 65-80% of concrete's volume and are inert fillers that float in the cement paste. Their characteristics impact the performance of fresh and hardened concrete. Aggregates are classified based on size, specific gravity, availability, shape, and texture. Proper aggregate grading leads to a dense, strong concrete mixture. The fineness modulus is a number that indicates an aggregate's grading, and the flakiness index measures elongated particles. Well-graded aggregates with low elongation produce high quality concrete.
A crusher is a machine that reduces large rocks into smaller pieces by using impact, attrition, shear, or compression. There are four main types of crushers: jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, and roll crushers. Jaw crushers use compression force to break rocks between a fixed and moving surface, while gyratory and cone crushers use a similar principle with a gyrating motion to break rocks inside an enclosed chamber. Roll crushers use cylindrical rollers to crush material. Each crusher type has different features that make it suitable for different applications depending on the material properties.
This document discusses hardness testing methods. It defines hardness as resistance to indentation, scratching, or wear. Common hardness tests include indentation hardness using Brinell, Vickers, and Rockwell tests which measure the resistance of a material to permanent indentation from static or dynamic loads. Rebound hardness measures energy absorption under impact loads using a scleroscope. Scratch and wear hardness measure resistance to scratching and abrasion. Relationships between hardness values and material properties like tensile strength are provided. Test procedures, calculations, and applications of different hardness tests are described.

It outlines various components of concrete mixes and their typical CO2 contributions. Lowering the cement content and replacing it with supplementary cementitious materials like ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) or fly ash can reduce CO2 by 50%. Using natural aggregates rather than synthetic ones also lowers CO2. An audit process is presented for quantifying the embodied CO2 of different building materials and construction elements. With modifications like using recycled steel frames, less ductwork, and promoting public transport, construction CO2 can be reduced by up to 40%. The overall goal is to minimize CO2 through material selection and design solutions that also

6. Bitumen and Product Specifications
Bitumen is available in a variety of grades. Specifications vary to meet
the needs of the consuming industries and are based on a series of physical
tests that define the safety, solubility, physical properties and durability of
bitumen.
The physical properties are designed to define performance character-
istics that are required under the climatic and loading conditions that the
bitumen will experience in service.
Bitumen is graded according to the standardized testing methods. These
tests also give rise to two commonly used terms which describe the method
of measurement, rather than a “type“ of Bitumen.
Middle East Recycling Company WLL
7. Penetration Graded Bitumen
Bitumen is classified by the depth to which a standard needle will pene-
trate under specified test conditions.
This “pen” test classification is used to indicate the hardness of bitumen,
lower penetration indicating harder bitumen.
Specifications for penetration graded bitumen’s normally state the pene-
tration range for a grade, e.g. 50/70.
Other tests are used to classify the bitumen for specification purposes,
such as softening point, solubility, flash point etc.

8. Cutback Bitumen
Cutbacks are bitumen preparations in which the viscosity of the
binder has been reduced by the addition of a volatile solvent, nor-
mally derived from petroleum.
Cutback products are typically used for spraying and some mix-
ing applications. The advantage of cutbacks over emulsions is
much higher residual bitumen content, typically over 80% com-
pared with over 40-65% for Bitumen emulsions.
The result is more Bitumen left on the roadway after curing, for
the same volume of binder applied.

9. Fluxed Bitumen
Fluxed bitumen’s are bitumen preparations where the viscos-
ity of the binder has been reduced by the addition of relatively
non-volatile oils. Typical fluxants include gas oil and vegetable
based oils.
MERCO fluxed bitumen is prepared from Bitumen 60/70 grade,
fluxed with non volatile light fuel oil.

11. Bitumen Emulsion K1-40
Bitumen emulsion consists of three basic ingredients: bitumen,
water, and an emulsifying agent.
Based on specifications it may contain other additives, such as sta-
bilizers, coating improver, anti-strips, or break control agents. It is
well known that water and asphalt will not mix, except under care-
fully controlled conditions using highly specialized equipment and
chemical additives.

A tack coat is a very light spray application of diluted asphalt emulsion.
It is used to create a bond between an asphalt overlay being placed and
the existing surface.

might be when an additional course is placed within two to three days on
a freshly-laid asphalt surface.
