Including Kids and Teens With Mental Illness in the Church and Community
In my talk, I plan to discuss how the church can do a better job reaching out to, and including kids and teens with mental illness and their families into the church. Mental illness represents (by far and away) the most common category of disabling conditions impacting kids and teens in the U.S. For many, the environments in which we “do church” present subtle, but very real barriers to participation and their families. Existing disability or “special needs” ministries typically don’t serve kids with mental illness in the absence of significant intellectual disability. I’ll discuss Key Ministry’s experiments with alternative ministry strategies and models to help churches effectively share the love of Christ with families of kids with “hidden disabilities.”

Many celebrities and well-known people of today and throughout history struggle with mental illness, and relatively few people know, even with these individuals living in the public eye. These influential individuals lead incredibly successful lives regardless of having to live with what can sometimes be crippling illnesses.
Over 43 million Americans battle with some form of mental illness; fortunately, there are ways that people can cope with their illnesses and lead successful lives instead of allowing their illnesses to control them.
Living with a mental illness does not mean that an individual’s abilities are limited. These celebrities of past and present are proof that great things are possible.
Conversion Disorder

- Definitions, related illnesses, risk factors and symptoms of conversion disorder
- Neurobiological frameworks for conversion disorder involving altered attention, awareness and affect dysregulation

Mental Illness in film
- 1. Mental Illness in Film Cameron Peace
- 2. Main Idea • The way the media covers mental health, and the mentally ill, today has changed the way we portray characters with mental illness in film. • How have these themes and ideas changed?
- 3. How have things changed? • Representation of the mentally ill and female roles have changed substantially in the last few decades. • Prior to only having support roles and sometimes negative representation, we would never see characters with an illness at the front of a film.
- 4. The Bad • Some films take advantage of those with a mental illness and choose to use it as an excuse to justify negative actions they might do.
- 5. Jason Voorhees • Well known horror movie character, seen outside of his films in other media as well. • On the inside, Jason was a troubled child, and was seen at multiple points in the films to be mentally ill and physically deformed. • Even at some points he was portrayed as even stupid, or confused, and the filmmakers tried to justify that through his illness.
- 6. The Good • More recent films have portrayed characters with mental illness as heroes, or heroines. • These characters are more fleshed out and feel like the protagonists they should be.
- 7. Forrest Gump • Gump, as portrayed by Hanks, is a mentally ill protagonist who left his mark on history. • He meets presidents, fights in a war, plays for a football team, and more. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSEdBNslGOk
- 8. Sucker Punch - Film from 2011, each protagonist deals with a mental illness of their own. - Entirely prominent female cast. - A “Dream World” the protagonists enter, incredible amount of symbolism.
