Proximity-Based Services – Cornerstones of beacon technology
• iBeacon is a protocol standardized by Apple and
introduced at the Apple Worldwide Developers
Conference in 2013.
• iBeacon uses Bluetooth low energy (BLE or
Bluetooth Smart) proximity sensing to transmit a
universally unique identifier picked up by a
compatible app or operating system.
• The Bluetooth LE protocol is significantly more
power efficient than Bluetooth Classic.
• the broadcasting device (beacon) is only a 1-way
transmitter to the receiving smartphone or receiving
device and necessitates a specific app installed on
the device
• The connection range goes up to 30-50 meters.
