Cognitive theory Insight learning –Gestalt School
Gestalt theory emphasizes that learning involves perceiving situations as organized wholes rather than as collections of parts. Insight learning or Gestalt learning occurs when a learner understands relationships within a problem and suddenly realizes a solution without trial and error. Kohler's experiments with chimpanzees demonstrated insight learning, such as when a chimp used sticks and boxes as tools to reach food. Insight learning relies on cognition rather than behaviorism and involves understanding problems as organized wholes.
Social cognitive learning – Albert Bandura
Albert Bandura developed the Social Cognitive Theory, which posits that learning occurs through observation and modeling within a dynamic social environment. Key aspects of the theory include: reciprocal determinism between personal factors, environmental influences, and behavior; observational learning; and self-efficacy. The theory emphasizes how people can learn through observing others, and explores the role of reinforcement, both direct and vicarious. Behavior is explained as being influenced through continuous interaction between cognitive, behavioral, and environmental factors.
Cognitive constructivism – Jerome.S. Bruner
1. Jerome Bruner was an influential American psychologist who developed the theory of cognitive constructivism, which posits that learning is an active process where learners construct new ideas based on their current and background knowledge.
2. Bruner proposed that cognitive development occurs in three stages - enactive (learning by doing), iconic (using mental images and models), and symbolic (using symbols and language) - and that instruction should help students transition between these stages.
3. Key aspects of Bruner's theory included the spiral curriculum, discovery learning, scaffolding, and using concept formation to help students categorize information. His work emphasized how instruction could be tailored to students' developmental levels and prior experiences.
