Melanoma
• 120,000 detected each year
• 60,000 early death per year
• 48,000 deaths are from
malignant melanoma
The incidence of melanoma appears
to be increasing for people under the
age of 40 years, especially women
because of excessive exposure to
the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Risk Factor for the development of Melanoma
Melanoma Sign and Symptoms
Itch.
Bleed
Feel painful
TYPES OF MELANOMA
Superficial spreading melanoma
It is the most common type, (about 70 percent of all
cases.)
Most often seen in young people.
It grows in top layer of the skin
Show following features-
• Itching
• Ulceration
• Bleeding
• Increasing Color
Nodular melanoma
This is the most aggressive and is found in 10 to 15
percent of cases.
It is usually invasive
It is usually black, but occasionally is blue, gray, white,
brown, tan, red or skin tone.
The most frequent locations are the trunk, legs, and
arms, mainly of elderly people , as well as the scalp
in men.
Lantigo Maligna
It is in situ type & similar to superficial spreading type.
It remains close to the skin surface
brown or dark brown discolouration.
It is found most often in the elderly,
arising on chronically sun-exposed,
damaged skin on the face, ears, arms
and upper trunk.
Lentigo maligna is the most common form of melanoma
in Hawaii.
It also spreads superficially
It usually appears as a black or brown discolouration under
the nails or on the soles of the feet or palms of the hands.
This type of melanoma is sometimes found on dark-skinned
people,
It is the most common melanoma in African-Americans and
Asians,
Acral lentiginous melanoma

Prevention of Melanoma
Since its inception in 1979,the skin Cancer Foundation
has always recommended using a sunscreen with an
SPF 15 or higher as one important part of a complete
sun protection regimen.
There is some skin cancer prevention tips:
 Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
 Seek the shed , especially between 10 AM and 4
PM.
 Don’t get sunburned.
 Avoid tanning and never use UV tanning beds.
 Cover up with clothing.
Prevention…
Foods that lower the risk of Melanoma
 Beta carotene: Found in orange colored vegetables and
fruits including carrots ,mangoes , kale , sweet potatoes etc.
 Lutein: Found in collard greens, spinach , kale .
 Lycopene: Found in red pigmented antioxidant is in
watermelon , guava , apricots and especially tomatoes. The
same red pigment in lycopene that helps protect the tomato
against sun damage may also help protect our skin against
sun damage.
Prevention…
 Omega-3 Fatty Acid: These nutrients inhibit COX-2 , a
chemical that promotes skin cancer progression. They can
reduce inflammation, several cancer. Found in fatty fish
such as salmon ,sardines, mackerel and albacore tuna are
chock full of omega-3.
 Polyphenols in Tea: Green tea and black tea can help
prevent skin cancer.
 Selenium: Found in Brazil nuts , meats such as chicken
,grass fed beef.
Prevention…
 Vitamin C : Found in orange and lemon.
 Vitamin E: Rich sources of vitamin E include
almonds and other nut.
 Zinc: It helps keep the immune system
functioning efficiently to fight cancer and other
diseases. Found in beef and lamb.
Medical Treatment
• Radiation Therapy
• Chemotherapy
• Immunotherapy
• Mutated Oncogene Direct
Therapy
• Biologic therapy
1) Immunotherapy
Ipilimumab approved
by FDA on 2011
2) Chemotherapy
Only one chemotherapy drug
Dacarbazine is approved for
melanoma
- Dabrafenib- FDA approved 2013
for the treatment of patient
metastatic melanoma
- Vemurafenib FDA approved on
2011
- Trametinib approved on may
2013
3) Mutated oncogene direct
therapy
Following recommendations for follow up for patient with
invasive melanoma
1. Self skin examination
2. Regular checks
3. Follow skin examination intervals within six
month and five years
4. Provide education and support
5. Use sun protective system
6. Take Oral vitamin D supplement
Conclusion
