The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.

4. MASTHEAD
The mast head is large bold and simple, all In capital
letters and at the top of the page, and is behind
the main image but still stands out.
Other magazines that use this common
convention;
5. DATE AND ISSUE NO.
Recent information, is informative for regular
readers to stay up to date. Always near the top
of the page. Slightly smaller that some text.
Examples of magazine that use this
convention;
6. MAIN IMAGE
Medium long shot, with single person in the
shot linked to main story with direct mode
of address. Brings connection of audience and
artist. The main image is in front of masthead.
Other magazines that follow these
conventions;
7. PULL QUOTE

and entices audience to read.

convention;
8. ANCHOR TEXT
This shows the name of the artist so it can entice
fans And anchors to the main image and is the main
story of he magazine

convention;

Other examples of magazines that use this
convention;

The titles are bold and contrasting, they are
also short and to the point. This breaks down
the magazine for easy navigation and entices
the reader to read more.

convention;
NUMBERING
The numbers make the magazine easy
to navigate around and makes it more suitable
for my target audience. It creates shortcuts to
the magazine which is convenient to the reader
13. SOCIAL MEDIA
When researching the conventions into this
I found that the majority of the media did not
use this feature. However I thought it was
necessary for my magazine to reach my target
audience as I found that the majority of the
readers in this type of magazine also read it
online so this is why I added this feature
to my magazine. This would allow my audience
to receive up to date notices and this will also
create more of a customer base for my
magazine. The use of social media here is
Essential so it would be possible to enter the
competition.
14. Other examples of magazines that use this
convention;
IMAGES
I used a mid shot for my image so you can
clearly see the body language and facial
expressions. This gives the reader an insight
on who the main feature of the magazine is
and also links to the front cover.
16. LAYOUT
I chose this layout as it was the common
layout for a magazine, where the image
of the artist is taking up the whole of
one page
and the information and text is on the
other. But I wanted to challenge the
convention of writing the artists name in
small and make it stand so it will make
the reader remember the name.
17. ANCHOR TEXT
For my anchor text I chose to
challenge the convention of
having a small name of the
artist placed in the top right
corner. As previously
mentioned, having a big and
bold name of the artist
should attract the audience
and inform them of the
article. I used the two
different colours to keep his
name bold and to stand out
more to the reader.
18. IMAGE
For my double page spread I used a close
up and this is a common convention for
magazine. The close us can show emotion
of the artist on the page and this entices
the reader to read on.
Other examples of magazines that use this
convention;
19. TAG LINE
This was not a common convention
I found in my research however I felt
that it was effective in my double
page spread and the words ‘New &
Upcoming’ will entice them to read
and there for will be beneficial to
the article.
20. DROP CAP
The drop cap is a common
convention of most magazines.
It is an introduction to the text,
large and bold. This makes the
text very enticing to read and
grabs the readers attention.
Other examples of magazines that use this
convention;
21. COLOMNS
From my research into codes
and convention, I found that
having the page split into three
equal sized column was a
common convention used,
which makes the spread look
professional and well organised.
I decided to stick to this
convention.
