1. Proposal form: task 9
Title of magazine: BEATZ – I decided to call my magazine BEATZ because it relates to the
chosen genre of music as it sides with rhythm which is closely connected with R&B/hip-hop.
I also thought it’s a good name for a magazine as it’s short and snappy and easy to
remember. The title instantly tells you that the magazine is about music without any
hesitation or confusion with the connotations of beatz; it allows it to draw in the audience
to those who are interested in music.
Choice of Genre: The genre I’ve chosen is R&B/hip-hop magazine. This is because I’ve
always been interested in this type of music; it’s a personal interest of mine. I also have lots
of knowledge about R&B/Hip-hop, and this will help towards my music magazine. I’ve done
plenty of background research on R&B/hip-hop; I’ve focused on Vibe magazine because it
uses the same genre I want to do for my magazine, this will benefit me on how my magazine
should look and what it should include.
My target audience: Are young urban followers who take an interest in this genre, the age
range will be particularly targeted to 16-24 year olds as most young urban followers are
around this age. Most magazines that use this type of genre are usually read by males. I
could focus more on the male audience as they will be attracted to my magazine more than
the female audiences however, I want to make a unisex magazine, which will attract both
sex’s to my magazine instead of one gender because it will help to get a wider range of
audience.
Initial ideas for front cover: For my front cover, I will be using dark and bright colours,
contrasting them together. I want it to be vibrant so it can catch the audience’s attention,
against a dark background so the masthead and cover lines stand out I have decided this
based on what was most popular with the audience and what attracted them to front
covers with just one main image, I know this from my survey and focus group. I will be
making my magazine cover similar to magazines that people found most eye catching which
were VIBE and BILLBOARD, what they both have in common is they have the masthead in
the top of the page in the centre going across the page in big bold letters, and a use of
bright and dark colours are used, which I will include in my magazine, I will also make my
cover page quite simple like VIBE and billboard, they have a few cover lines and one main
one, but their technique is, less is more and I want to do the same for my magazine and not
have it packed with loads of cover lines and information. Also taking influence and
deliberately stereotyping the cover instantly identifies to the readers what kind of magazine
this is and will surly prompt readers of this genre to pick it up.
Initial ideas for contents page: in my contents page I will have one big image and a list of
page numbers on one side, the contents page will follow the rule of thirds and it will include
all of the things most content pages include for example, editors notes and credits, my main
focus will be about the image, to catch the reader’s attention, I want my contents page to
2. consist of dull subtle colours, not too bright or too dark so it is easy to read the contents on
the page, allowing more focus of the image and text.
Initial ideas for my article: I will either do an article about an artist or an interview with an
artist to engage the readers, as most people would prefer to read an article about an artist,
this was carried out from surveys and research. I will include one main image on the right
hand page of the double page spread, this is because when flicking through a magazine, you
are usually looking through the right hand side pages first, so if I put an image on the right
hand side it will catch the reader’s attention. I’m thinking to use subtle colours again on the
double page article, as it will have less impact on annoying the eyes, calm colours and
plenty of white space are suitable for reading and a snappy headline and quote will be used
to intrigue the customers.
Initial ideas for my photographs: I will use one main image for my cover photo preferably a
medium close up or medium shot, my contents page will use one larger image in the
portrait orientation and maybe one or 2 smaller images on the contents page, most likely
medium close ups or close ups to maintain that focus on the main image and one big image
across the double page spread which will be a medium or medium long shot. Images will be
of urban people as my magazine is about urban music- R&B/hip-hop
