Measurement
Standard 3
Objectives
Height & Length
• Height is the measurement of someone
or something from head to foot or from
base to top.
• Length is the measurement or extent of
something from end to end; the greater
of two or the greatest of three
dimensions of an object.
Height & Length
100 cm = 1 m
• Centimeter (symbol: cm) is a unit of
length in the International System of
Units (SI), the current form of the
metric system.
• A meter, or metre (symbol: m), is the
base unit of length and distance in the
International System of Units (SI).
100 cm = 1 m
• A meter is equal to 100 centimeters.
1 meter = 100 centimeters
• Meters can be used to measure the
length of a house, or the size of a
playground.
Centimeters
A centimeter (cm) is about:
• about as long as a staple
• the width of a highlighter
• the width of 5 CD's stacked on top of
each other.
• the thickness of a notepad.
Meters
A meter (m) is about:
• The half of the length of a bed.
• The width of a large fridge.
• The height of a countertop.
• The width of a dining table.
• From the heel to the elbow of an adult.
• shoulder to opposite wrist of an adult.
• From tip to tip of a child's outstretched
arms.
• The height of a 5 year old.
Convert centimeters to meters
Convert meters to centimeters
1 meter = 1000 millimeters
Look at the diagram and observe the
measurements.
Kilometre
A kilometer or kilometre (symbol: km) is a
unit of length in the International System
of Units (SI).
Kilometre
Gram and Kilogram
In the metric system of measurement, the most common units of
mass are the gram and kilogram.
A small paperclip has a mass of about 111 grams.
A wooden baseball bat has a mass of about 111 kilogram:
1 kg = 1000g
Convert kilograms to grams:
Millimeters
• Small units of length are called millimeters.
• A millimeter is about the thickness of a
plastic id card (or phone card).
• Or about the thickness of 10 sheets of
paper on top of each other.
• This is a very small measurement!
Litres
A Metric unit of volume
Mostly used to measure liquids
The abbreviation is l or L
1 liter = 1,000 milliliters (ml)
This jug has exactly 1 litre of water in it.
1 liter = 1,000 milliliters (ml)
