DIRECT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER INPUT
What is length?
length simply means how long or short an object is.
length is measured in Metres however this can appear in
different bits such as Centimetres, decimetres, kilometres
etc.
Can you list some instrument for linear measure (length)?
Bravo! They include meter rule, odometre, tape rule, hand
span, feet etc.
INSTRUMENTS FOR MEASURING length
Metric units for linear measure
(length)
10 Millimeter = 1 Centimetre
10 Centimetre = 1 Decimetres
10 Decimetres = 1 Metres
1000 Metres = 1kilometres
Also note that...
100 millimetres = 1 decimetre
1000 millimetres = i metre
100centemetres = 1 metre
SHARED/INTERACTIVE INSTRUCTION
conversion of the units of length
Steps
1.Identify the bigger and smaller unit in your work
2.Identify their relationship.
Example 100 millimeter make one decimetre this means that the
relationship between millimeter and decimeter is 100
3. When you convert from the bigger unit to the smaller unit, you
multiply the bigger unit by their relationship.
4.When you convert from a smaller unit to the greater one you divide
by their relationship.
Conversion of the units of length
Examples : convert the following
1. Convert 123 cm to mm
2. Change 65 metres to mm
3. Write 4530 mm as decimeter
4. Express 4536 m as km ÷
Solution 1
Convert 123 cm to mm
The relationship = 10
since 10mm=1cm
We are converting from a bigger unit to a
smaller unit so we multiply by
10(relationship)
123 cm = 123 x 10
= 1230 mm
Solution 2
Convert 65m to cm
The relationship = 100
since 100cm=1m
We are converting from a bigger unit to a
smaller unit so we multiply by
100(relationship)
65m = 65 x 100
= 6500cm
Conversion of the units of length
Examples : convert the following
1. Convert 123 cm to mm
2. Change 65 metres to mm
3. Write 4530 mm as decimeter
4. Express 4536 m as km
Solution 1
Write 4530 mm as decimeter
The relationship = 100
since 100mm=1dm
We are converting from a smaller unit to
a bigger unit so we divide by
100(relationship)
4530m = 4530 ÷ 10
= 435 dm
Solution 1
Express 4536 m as km
The relationship = 1000
since 1000m=1km
We are converting from a smaller unit to
a bigger unit so we divide by
1000(relationship)
65m = 4563 ÷ 1000
= 4.563 km

Addition and subtraction of units of measurement
Examples :
1. A boy has 23.5 litres of fruit juice, his sister has 324 cl of fruit
juice. How many litres of juice do they have together?
2. John rode his bicycle for 430 metre while Jane rode for 1.2 km.
How many more distance did jane covered than John in metres?
3. Express 2kg – 1350 g in grammes.
Solution 1
The boy has 23.5 L
His sister has 324cl = 32.4 L
(divided 324cl by 100)
because 100cl =1 litres
Therefore together they have 55.92L
of juice
Solution 2
John rode for 430m
Jane rode for 1.2km = 1200m
(multiplied 324cl by 1000)
because 1000g =1 kg
Therefore Jane rode 1200m – 430m
more than John.
1200m – 430m = 770m
Addition and subtraction of units of measurement

2. John rode his bicycle for 430 metre while Jane rode for 1.2 km.
How many more distance did jane covered than John in metres?
3. Express 2kg – 1350 g in grammes.
Solution 3
2kg = 2 x 1000 2000g
(multiply by 1000)
because 1g = 1000kg
2000 g
-1350 g
650 g

Conversion of the units of measurement 4 day lesson.pptx

  • 1. STARTER : I want to know the length of the interactive board. Which instruments can I use? can anyone give a rough guess of the measurement of the length of their desk? Apart from the unit you used initially are there other units for measuring length?
  • 2. Vocabulary: 1. Capacity 2. Hand span 3. Weight 4. Mass 5. length
  • 3. TOPIC: Conversion of the unit of measurement WALT : 1. Say the meaning of length and instruments for measuring length. 2. State the metric unit for length measure 3. Convert the units of length.
  • 4. SUCCESS CRITERIA: 1. I can say the meaning of length and instruments for measuring length. 2. I can state the metric unit for length measure 3. I can convert the units of length.
  • 5. DIRECT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER INPUT What is length? length simply means how long or short an object is. length is measured in Metres however this can appear in different bits such as Centimetres, decimetres, kilometres etc. Can you list some instrument for linear measure (length)? Bravo! They include meter rule, odometre, tape rule, hand span, feet etc.
  • 7. Metric units for linear measure (length) 10 Millimeter = 1 Centimetre 10 Centimetre = 1 Decimetres 10 Decimetres = 1 Metres 1000 Metres = 1kilometres Also note that... 100 millimetres = 1 decimetre 1000 millimetres = i metre 100centemetres = 1 metre
  • 8. SHARED/INTERACTIVE INSTRUCTION conversion of the units of length Steps 1.Identify the bigger and smaller unit in your work 2.Identify their relationship. Example 100 millimeter make one decimetre this means that the relationship between millimeter and decimeter is 100 3. When you convert from the bigger unit to the smaller unit, you multiply the bigger unit by their relationship. 4.When you convert from a smaller unit to the greater one you divide by their relationship.
  • 9. Conversion of the units of length Examples : convert the following 1. Convert 123 cm to mm 2. Change 65 metres to mm 3. Write 4530 mm as decimeter 4. Express 4536 m as km ÷ Solution 1 Convert 123 cm to mm The relationship = 10 since 10mm=1cm We are converting from a bigger unit to a smaller unit so we multiply by 10(relationship) 123 cm = 123 x 10 = 1230 mm Solution 2 Convert 65m to cm The relationship = 100 since 100cm=1m We are converting from a bigger unit to a smaller unit so we multiply by 100(relationship) 65m = 65 x 100 = 6500cm
  • 10. Conversion of the units of length Examples : convert the following 1. Convert 123 cm to mm 2. Change 65 metres to mm 3. Write 4530 mm as decimeter 4. Express 4536 m as km Solution 1 Write 4530 mm as decimeter The relationship = 100 since 100mm=1dm We are converting from a smaller unit to a bigger unit so we divide by 100(relationship) 4530m = 4530 ÷ 10 = 435 dm Solution 1 Express 4536 m as km The relationship = 1000 since 1000m=1km We are converting from a smaller unit to a bigger unit so we divide by 1000(relationship) 65m = 4563 ÷ 1000 = 4.563 km
