Case study
MAXIS COMMUNICATIONS BERHAD: Management Development
MAXIS COMMUNICATIONS BERHAD (MAXIS) is the fastest growing telecommunications and
the leading mobile communications service provider in Malaysia. It provides a wide range of
mobile, fixed line and international network services to customers.
MAXIS was on the threshold of rolling out 3G services to further enhance the range and scope of
their operations and provide newopportunities for growth. It had also recently purchased Timecel,
a rival mobile service provider, from TimedotCom Berhad, to improve customer experience and
add value to stakeholders.
The Challenge
CELSIM was asked to design and deliver a management development programme for managers
targeted for succession into senior positions to enhance their management skills to effectively
manage newly merged teams with new strategic directions for sustained business growth.
The objective of the programme is to develop managerial effectiveness in:
1. Personal Effectiveness: equip participants with the tools and techniques to make the
most of all resources at their disposal, personal time, energy and talents.
2. Managing People: fulfill role as defined within the organisation structure and manage
people in a way that achieves the organisation's goals.
3. Business Acumen: assure the financial profitability of the organisation and ensure the
continuity of provision of service in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and quality.
The Solution
In partnership with Mohamad Kamal Nawawi, Manager MAXIS Academy, we designed the
Management Development programme – combining highly engaging workshops, role plays,
business simulations and personal development activities – to address MAXIS leadership and
business challenges. This included:
 Increasing self-awareness through highly interactive activities to develop a successful
approach and to leverage performance improvements in the workplace.
 Maximise team leadership effectiveness working with, coaching and learning from people
from diverse backgrounds, cultures and different viewpoints.
 Business simulation to immerse participants in real-world business situations to
effectively challenge thinking and help them understand the impact of decisions made.
The Results
MAXIS managers gained the knowledge and skills to improve business acumen and the
confidence to transfer learning to the workplace to improve team leadership and coaching to
deliver business performance for competitive advantage.
Celine Ong (Marketing Manager), a participant on our management development programme,
says, “It is an excellent opportunity to improve my management skills, re-focus on business
processes and re-assess their value to the business. The tools that I have learned are very
valuable and I know I can offer what I have learned back to my team to be utilised for all the
positive reasons. I especially enjoyed the team dynamics associated with the business simulation
and I'd recommend it highly!”
