SEMBCORP Industries aimed to develop critical team leadership skills for senior managers through a 2-day residential program. The program utilized assessments, workshops, role plays and a management simulation game to improve skills in shared situational awareness, communication and influence. Participant feedback indicated the program helped them better understand their strengths and weaknesses, crystallize their thinking on communication and influence tactics, and learn more about themselves and their colleagues in an engaging environment.

SEMBCORP INDUSTRIES Ltd: Team Leadership
SEMBCORP INDUSTRIES (SEMBCORP) is a leading Singapore-based conglomerate providing
Utilities, Marine and Offshore Engineering, Environmental Management, and Industrial Parks in
Singapore, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and the region.
SEMBCORP is a firm believer in people development. To build its talent pipeline, SEMBCORP
identifies and prepares suitable employees, through mentoring, training and job rotation, to take
over leadership positions.
The Challenge
CELSIM was asked to design and deliver a team leadership programme for senior managers
from the Utilities Group to develop shared situational awareness and improve competence in
communication and influence.
The objective of the programme was to develop critical leadership capabilities in:
1. Shared Situational Awareness: understand the benefits of sharing resources and
knowledge, develop unity and cohesion of effort toward stated goals.
2. Communication: develop clarity and flexibility of approach to meet any situation as it
arises, move self and others from conflict to agreement and cooperation.
3. Influence: build deep levels of rapport improving impact and influence, ensure team and
organisation are aligned with the culture and business direction.
The Solution
In partnership with Lilian Lee, Senior Vice President Group HR, we designed a 2 day Team
Leadership residential programme held at Bintan Indonesia – combining GAPPS self and team
leadership roles assessment, highly interactive workshops, role plays, and a management
decision game – to improve critical skills in team leadership. These included:
A series of powerful activities to identify goals to ensure team agreement and motivation
toward achieving the goals.
A management decision game to encourage knowledge sharing, team problem solving,
and provide a compelling motivation to share.
Drawing together the learning and experiences, create a plan of action for transfer to the
workplace that continues to enhance team and personal development.
The Results
The Team Leadership residential programme provided an engaging environment for SEMBCORP
senior managers to improve their critical team leadership skills as well as encourage the
development of self-awareness and the affects of behaviour, aid alignment, and foster an
appreciation of the synergies within the successful Utilities team.
Ling Poon Lim (Senior Vice President SembGas), a participant on our programme commented,

course allowed me to crystallise my thinking on communication and how to influence. Clear
training objectives and high participation levels enhanced learning experience for all. It was fun
