ROYAL HONG KONG YACHT CLUB: Team Leadership
The ROYAL HONG KONG YACHT CLUB (RHKYC) is one of the oldest and most prestigious
sports club in Hong Kong for sailing and rowing. It has evolved into a multi-faceted and
cosmopolitan organisation and its membership enjoys a comprehensive range of facilities, both
afloat and ashore.
RHKYC continues to enjoy a tradition of strong membership growth and organising successful
and well-attended social and competitive events, attracting sponsorships from many prominent
multi-national corporations including Rolex, BMW and Skandia.
The Challenge
CELSIM was asked to design and deliver a team leadership programme to equip club managers
with the tools and techniques to lead, coach and motivate themselves and their teams to unite
toward common goals and move the team from individual potential to team performance.
Using our GAINMORE™ Development Needs Diagnosis Framework, three key issues should be
addressed:
1. Coaching: rise to full leadership potential and unlock the potential of others to attain
corporate and personal goals.
2. Team Cohesion and Unity: identify shared goals and create a shared vision, foster team
spirit, align the right resources and recognise every member’s talents and strengths.
3. Shared Situational Awareness: develop unity and cohesion of effort towards stated goals,
break down any silos and provide a compelling motivation to share.
The Solution
In partnership with Susanna Chung, Human Resources Manager, we designed the Team
Leadership programme – combining GAPPS self assessment, highly interactive workshops and
one-to-one coaching – to address RHKYC team and leadership challenges. This included:
A series of powerful activities to identify goals to ensure team agreement and motivation
towards achieving the goals aligned with organisational goals.
Management games and roles plays to encourage team problem solving, enhance team
spirit while maintaining focus on service in a climate of continuous change.
Drawing together the learning and experiences, creating a plan of action for transfer to
the workplace that continues to enhance team and personal development.
The Results
RHKYC managers gained the confidence, skills and knowledge to inspire commitment and
motivation from teams to achieve their own and the organisation’s goals. The Team Leadership
programme provided an engaging environment that encouraged the developmentof self-
awareness and the affects of behaviour and fostered high team spirit and integration.
Ray Parry (General Manager) summed up his satisfaction with our team leadership programme
saying, “The team absolutely loved it! CELSIM has demonstrated its unique ability to tap into the
human potential and transform it into lasting results. The programme helped us visualise our
direction and gave us all an energised perspective to achieve our goals. It was excellent, unique
and enjoyable.”
