Mavi Glinoga from Monash University presented on common method variance at the NewMR Advances in Quantitative Research Event on September 19, 2012. She defined common method variance as systematic error from the common method of data collection that can inflate or deflate relationships between variables. She discussed sources of common method variance such as social desirability bias and item context effects. She recommended strategies to mitigate common method variance, including separating measurement of different constructs, careful question wording and ordering, and statistical tests to assess common method variance. The presentation aimed to increase awareness of common method variance and its impact on research validity.
