What is Matter? Matter is everything around you!
All matter has…… Mass Volume &
Examples of Matter Pencil, book, car, etc. That includes you  Anything that has mass & volume
What is Volume? The amount of space taken up or occupied by an object
How do we measure the volume of LIQUIDS? Use a graduated cylinder *Make sure you look at the bottom of the meniscus We need to measure how much water was displaced Measured in mL (milliliters) Meniscus
How do we measure the volume of SOLIDS? For irregularly shaped objects, use a graduated cylinder to see how much water is displaced (mL) We can use a formula to calculate the volume of certain objects Ex: L x W x H for a rectangular prism (Measured in cm 3 or m 3 )
How do we measure the volume of Gases? A gas expands to fill its container; so, if you find the volume of the container the gas is in, then you know the volume of gas
What is mass and how is it measured? Mass is the amount of matter that something is made of. Example: Elephant = A LOT of matter = LARGE MASS Paperclip = very little matter = SMALL MASS *Make sure the balance is calibrated to 0 before you begin! We measure mass with a triple beam balance. Add the value of the riders to find the mass in grams (g)
