Mars, our Neighbor Red Planet
Exploration of Mars, our Neighbor Red Planet
Introduction
 Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is the
second smallest planet in the solar system after
Mercury.
 It is named after the Roman god of war and is
also often described as the Red Planet. It derives
its name from the reddish appearance which it
gives off. Needless to say, this reddish
appearance is pretty distinctive among the
astronomical bodies that are visible to the naked
eye.
Geological Makeup of Mars
 Mars is a terrestrial planet which has a solid
surface made of rocks and metals. Its surface
features are reminiscent of the Moon and valleys,
deserts and polar ice caps of the Earth.
 The bright red appearance of rust that Mars gives
is because of the iron-rich minerals present, as
the loose dust and rock that covers its surface.
The soil of the Earth is thought to be similar to
this except that it also has some other organic
contents to it. When the iron minerals oxidize they
cause the soil to look red.
Mountains of Mars
 The planet is home to the largest mountain in the
entire solar system called Olympus Mons which is
roughly 17 miles (27 km) high, that is about 3
times as tall as Mount Everest, and 370 miles
(600 km) wide in diameter which is enough to
cover New Mexico!
 This mountain contributes to one of the most
volatile volcanoes on Mars, being the largest
ones in the entire solar system.
Moons of Mars
 Mars has two moons Phobos and Deimos, which
were discovered in 1877. The two moons are
made entirely of carbon-rich rock mixed with ice
and are covered in dust and lose rocks.
 Mars’s moons are tiny next to the Earth’s moon
and are irregularly shaped. They lack the gravity
needed to pull themselves into a more circular
form.
Atmosphere on Mars
 Mars is much colder than Earth, mostly due to its
greater distance from the sun. It is said that the Sun is
seen as half its size than we see in the Earth. The
average temperature is minus 80 degrees in
Fahrenheit and minus 60 degrees in Celsius although
it can vary from time to time.
 The carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere of the planet is
also roughly 100 less dense than Earth’s but it is still
thick enough to support weather, clouds, and winds. It
is thought that there was once life on this planet and it
might still be capable of supporting human life.
Life on Mars
 Though no trace of currently active life has been
found on Mars so far, water has been found in the
form of ice. Exploration and Research continues
full swing on this very interesting red planet.

  • 3. Introduction  Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is the second smallest planet in the solar system after Mercury.  It is named after the Roman god of war and is also often described as the Red Planet. It derives its name from the reddish appearance which it gives off. Needless to say, this reddish appearance is pretty distinctive among the astronomical bodies that are visible to the naked eye.
  • 4. Geological Makeup of Mars  Mars is a terrestrial planet which has a solid surface made of rocks and metals. Its surface features are reminiscent of the Moon and valleys, deserts and polar ice caps of the Earth.  The bright red appearance of rust that Mars gives is because of the iron-rich minerals present, as the loose dust and rock that covers its surface. The soil of the Earth is thought to be similar to this except that it also has some other organic contents to it. When the iron minerals oxidize they cause the soil to look red.
  • 5. Mountains of Mars  The planet is home to the largest mountain in the entire solar system called Olympus Mons which is roughly 17 miles (27 km) high, that is about 3 times as tall as Mount Everest, and 370 miles (600 km) wide in diameter which is enough to cover New Mexico!  This mountain contributes to one of the most volatile volcanoes on Mars, being the largest ones in the entire solar system.
  • 6. Moons of Mars  Mars has two moons Phobos and Deimos, which were discovered in 1877. The two moons are made entirely of carbon-rich rock mixed with ice and are covered in dust and lose rocks.  Mars’s moons are tiny next to the Earth’s moon and are irregularly shaped. They lack the gravity needed to pull themselves into a more circular form.
  • 7. Atmosphere on Mars  Mars is much colder than Earth, mostly due to its greater distance from the sun. It is said that the Sun is seen as half its size than we see in the Earth. The average temperature is minus 80 degrees in Fahrenheit and minus 60 degrees in Celsius although it can vary from time to time.  The carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere of the planet is also roughly 100 less dense than Earth’s but it is still thick enough to support weather, clouds, and winds. It is thought that there was once life on this planet and it might still be capable of supporting human life.
  • 8. Life on Mars  Though no trace of currently active life has been found on Mars so far, water has been found in the form of ice. Exploration and Research continues full swing on this very interesting red planet.
