1. Market research results analysis
As part of my coursework, I had to design a questionnaire in order to determine the target audience
for my documentary that I was producing. I also wanted to identify if they watched documentaries,
how often they did and the reasons behind them watching documentaries. The information I
gathered is quantitative data and it will help me to develop my documentary.
I asked my participants to give detail of their age, I found that the majority were aged
between 18 and 24 showing me that ideally my documentary should be suitable and appeal
to people between the age of 18 and 24.
These results show that there was a higher percentage of males who answered the
questionnaire, 66.67% to 33.33%. This shows that the answers given will be more related
to males and their opinions on documentaries and overall could possibly be seen as more
biased answers.
2. The percentage of people that said they enjoyed watching documentaries was 66.67%
while 33.33% said that it depended on the subject of the documentary.
All of the participants stated that they watched documentaries, but a higher percentage
said that they only watched it sometimes (66.67%) compared to 33.33% who watched
documentaries often. This shows me that making a documentary for my coursework would
be a good choice as it will always attract an audience.
3. 66.67% of the participants stated that the length of the documentary would not have any
effect on whether they watched it or not, while 33.33% said that the topic of the
documentary would be the deciding factor as to whether they watched the documentary
or not.
With this question I wanted to find out the reason behind why my participants chose to
watch documentaries, 44.44% of participants said the subject was the main reason and
also 44.44% of participants said that to learn about something new was the reason. ‘To be
entertained’ was the reason for watching for 11.11% of participants.
4. I wanted to determine the most popular type of genre for documentaries within my target
audience. I found that the wildlife genre was the most popular with 57.14% of the vote
and education and technology was second as they shared an equal 42.86%. This was good
for my documentary as I had aimed to promote more of an educational message in my
work which is good as it seems to be quite important to my target audience.
5. With this question I wanted to determine which style of documentary would be best to use
when creating/filming my own documentary. The participants stated that the ‘fly on the
wall’ and ‘voice of god (narrator)’ were there two favourite modes of documentary with
66.67% of votes that they watched with participatory where the presenter gets involved
with the events in the documentary was next with 44.44% of votes.
6. Martial arts is my choice of topic for my documentary and I wanted to find out from my
participants if they knew anything about martial arts before they watched the
documentary. I found that 66.67% of of the participants did not know anything about
martial arts in comparison to 33.33% of participants who did not know anything about the
sport.
7. With this final question I wanted to know if the participants in my survey wanted to take
up and learn about martial arts. 77.78% of participants said that they would not like to
learn more about martial arts compared to 22.22% who said that they would like to learn
more.
In conclusion, the results I gathered were very mixed and wide but they provided me with
a good understanding of who my target audience consisted of and what they wanted to
see when it came to me producing my final piece. This market research will be vital when
it comes to decision making in my coursework production as the audience play a huge role
in the success of a documentary.
