Multi-camera filming
Studio programmes
What did you learn about last week?
Last week you began looking at what multi-camera filming is, and how it is
used in TV production.
You began to analyse the BBC’s coverage of the London Olympics opening
ceremony.
This week
You will be learning about the different types of studio programmes that use
multi-camera filming techniques, before analysing 1 show.
By the end of the lesson, you
MUST understand what different types of studio programme are filmed using
a multi-camera setup.
SHOULD analyse the format of a magazine show, identifying how segments,
inserts and links are used to organise an engaging TV show.
COULD explain the problems producers face filming in a studio environment
and how they overcome these.
Last week we looked at live events, but what is a
studio programme?
A studio programme is any
TV show which is filmed
primarily in a TV studio (a
large space equipped for
videography which can be
rented out).
What different types of studio programme are
there?
What different types of studio programme are
there?
● Game shows
● Talk shows
● Magazine shows
● News
● Review shows
● Sitcom
Magazine shows
A magazine show is a news &
features programme which
reports about a particular area
of interest to it's viewers.
Who knows what the area of
interest is in Victoria Derbyshire?
● Daily news & current affairs.
What is the subject matter in this show?
The Gadget show is a
technology-focused TV
programme.
What is the subject matter in this show?
Top Gear is a automotive
entertainment TV
programme.
What is the subject matter in this show?
The One Show is a topical issues
Magazine show about trending
stories.
All TV programmes have a format.
The format of a programme can be described as its different components (or
sections) and the order in which they unfold.
1. The intro (& later, the outro) is a PTC (piece-to-camera) by the presenters,
welcoming the audience to the show.
2. A segment is a section of the programme on one particular story / issue.
3. An insert is a pre-recorded report, often on location.
4. A link is a scripted piece of dialogue which allows the presenter to move
onto the next segment.
Lets watch an example together.
Identify the intro, links,
segments, inserts.

Today, I want you to analyse the format of the
Magazine show ‘The Gadget Show’
(https://youtu.be/PbMDZBS-sqw)
1. Analyse the shows format, identifying it's intro & outro, what each of the different
segments are about, the links the presenters use to move the show forward and
what segments are pre-recorded inserts.
2. Why do you think the producers chose to film this episode using a multi-camera
setup?
3. What problems do you think the producers faced filming in the TV studio?
4. Do you think these problems influenced what they chose to film as a pre-recorded
insert?
5. How did the director cover all of the action? What different angles did they get?
How did this hold the audiences interest?
Feedback
By the end of this lesson, you
MUST develop creative ideas for a magazine show.
SHOULD pitch an imaginative idea for a magazine show to the group
COULD identify the next steps for your project.
Lets look at some of planning
[insert pic of planning doc]
We all need to improve at something.
What do you need to get better at this year?
● Being more pro-active during planning?
● Doing work at home?
● Speaking up, or becoming less passive in group work?
● Writing your plans in more detail?
● Getting organised ahead of time?
Identify what your weakness is during pre-production and set yourself it as a
target for improvement. Write it down on the paper in front of you. That
target is for you; keep it in your mind over this project.
Task 1:
In groups of no more than 3….
You need to come up with 3 different concepts for magazine shows. You
should think about:
1. Your shows theme (entertainment, music, politics, automotive)
2. Different segments
3. Different inserts
4. Your shows style (fun, formal, zany, serious)
5. Your shows USP
Task 2
In your groups, take 1 idea and produce a five minute pitch for it, with a
presentation. Try to sell us on the mood and fun factor; what makes it
different?
Pitches
Prepare for questions and feedback!
Plenary
In your groups start discussing ideas - you may want to use one of the ideas
from today, or you may want to come up with more ideas.
Before next weeks lesson try to come up with at least 3 ideas in your group
that you can begin developing.
