Magazine Research
Emily Pinder
Planning
• For the print proposal, I have decided to create a
magazine. I have a few different ideas/styles that
I want to create. I will then choose one style to
research and create.
• Ideas;
– Fashion magazine
– Fitness/health magazine
– Photography magazine
– Music magazine
– Art magazine
– Interior design magazine
Planning
• I am going to create a fashion magazine as it is
an area I am interested in and it is a popular
genre. Also, I am familiar with a wide range of
different fashion magazines.

– LOVE magazine 5th Anniversary edition 2013
• The love magazine is a bi-annual British magazine that is
famous for its unique and interesting spin on the typical
glossy fashion mag. The raw look of the magazine is its
main selling point as it stands out from its competitors on
the market. Black and white photography is used
throughout the magazine to create an aged and classic
style. Also, the colour photography has a muted style.
• This magazine also celebrates nudity and is a common
feature of each issue, with the first issue presenting a
naked Beth Ditto on the cover. This magazine also explores
lots of different theme and styles of nudity from “the
grittily pornographic to the breathtakingly artistic.” -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOVE_(magazine)
• A range of different celebrities and models have featured
on the covers of this magazine since its first issue in 2009.
Rihanna, Kate Moss and Miley Cyrus are a few of
celebrities who have had their own cover of the magazine.
The love magazine is also famous for have multiple
different covers for the same issues featuring a range of
models in the same pose/style.
LOVE magazine
• Love magazine has a median age range of 28. Also, its main
audience is women taking up 80% of sales. Its main
distribution is in Britain, with 70% of its sales in the South
East of London. The magazine has a middle class audience
of 72% with 48% of that audience being upper class.
• The magazine is also quite hard to find as it is only stocked
by specialist magazine shops, bookshops, independents
and top boutiques. It is however, stocked by high street
store WH Smiths.
• The website for the magazine, covers different events in
fashion such as shows, new collections and trends. It also
celebrates photographers and film makers work. The
website also has short teaser videos for what the
upcoming magazine will contain.
• The magazine itself is more artistic and visual inspiring
rather than filled with lots of articles like other fashion
magazines. As the magazine is only released twice a year, it
resembles more a book or catalogue in size and amount of
content.
LOVE magazine
• In my research, I found this
paragraph about what the
magazine is by its creators.
• The magazine is famous for
being a much more artistic
and inspiring collection of
photographs that inspire its
audience. The magazine is
also a self proclaimed trend
setter rather than a follower
of styles.
• Rather than being more
article based, this magazine
focuses more on imagery.
Minimal amounts of text are
used. This creates the idea
of this magazine is more
about fashion as art rather
than to buy.
• The LOVE magazine is heavily influenced and funded by its
advertisers. The magazine charges a lot of money to
companies who want to advertise in the magazine. As
most of the advertisers are designer/high end brands this
money is easily affordable.
• Also, as this magazines only releases two issues a year, the
company must be able to afford this type of advert as it
will not reach such a wide audience compared to
worldwide posters.
LOVE magazine
Website
• This is the layout of the
magazines website. It follows a
very simple and easy to follow
layout that has a
polished/clean look. This also
follows the ideals of the
magazine itself as it has a
minimalist approach to its
images and articles.
• I feel this website follows the
same layout idea as popular
social media app, Instagram, as
it follows the 3 across rule
making the images a collective
but also so they stand out
individually.
Magazine
• This layout of the LOVE magazine is
very simple and has a lot of adverts
with double page spreads. The brands
that are advertised in this magazine
are designer and have very artistic,
simplistic and simple adverts.
• These adverts show what the
audience of the magazine is as most
of the items in the adverts cost
hundreds of pounds.
• This also shows that the social class
audience is high class.
• The magazine contains a lot of full
page images which is consistent
throughout.
• The articles in the magazine often
have very small writing and are
arranged into columns. The theme of
the magazine is continued throughout
Magazine
• The magazine explores a lot of
different themes and styles of
photography. These are all
collective and contribute to the
unusual, unique style of the
magazine.
• A minimal amount of text is
used throughout the magazine
and is mainly focused on
images. The look of the
magazine is crazy as it explores
black and white, vintage and
bright colours all in one.
• The magazine is very big and
the size of a brochure as it
includes lots of content.
Magazine
• Parts of the magazine appear
to showcase works of art such
as these images. However, they
do actually support an article
but also look like pieces of art
because they are separated.
• As you can see the theme of
the article is continued with
the layout and theme.
• However, with the different
themes, the main structure of
the magazine is kept consistent
for example with the text in
columns.

– Company magazine October 2014
Company magazine
• Company magazine was a monthly publication that featured news
about fashion, celebrities and lifestyle. The magazine was
published in the UK from 1978. Its final issue was released on
October 2014 due to declining sales and is now an online only
magazine.
• The magazine usually features a celebrity cover star that also has a
photo shoot and interview in the magazine. Around the cover you
can find lots of subheadings that tell you what you can find in the
magazine.
• The magazine had a revamp in the beginning of 2012 to help failing
sales and reflect the aspect of the fashion blogging world that has
highly influenced the magazine in recent years. The magazine
changed from a glossy, big print fashion magazine to a bite size,
matt and illustrated magazine. This restyled also effected the
content of the magazine as it made the magazine more fashion
and beauty focused. The magazine also wanted to reflect street
style and those of its audience rather than being a glossy high
fashion magazine.
• “It’s a total reinvention of the traditional women’s magazine and
has been designed with our readers’ needs and demands in mind.”
magazine-gets-redesign/
Company magazine
• The median age of this magazines audience is
26. This is after the revamp of the magazine.
Also, the majority audience is females with
only 3% of the audience male. The magazine
does not really create content that a male
audience would enjoy and is aimed at
women. The magazine is also has a larger
audience of middle class women compared
to upper class.
• The magazine is also aimed at British women,
featuring fashion and beauty items found in
England and that cater to this climate.
• The magazine features articles are bloggers
and career advice from women in their
dream jobs as well as fashion, beauty and
celebrities.
Website
• The website layout, I feel is very
basic but not in a simple and classic
way. It appears with a retro, block
design but is easy to navigate. As
the website is now the magazine,
you can find new articles on the
home page along with the most
popular on a slide show at the top
of the page. The tabs at the top
separate the different areas of the
magazine.
• The website does not reflect the
layout and creative, fun style of the
magazine.
Magazine
• Company magazine has
scrapbook feel as a range of
different texts are used, colours
and sizes throughout the
magazine. Also, the material of
this magazine is thicker, matt
paper compared to the usual
glossy, thin paper magazine.
• The adverts in company
magazine are of everyday items
that will be used by the
audience. Their price range is
also a lot more affordable as the
magazine is aimed at
middle/working class.

– Cosmopolitan magazine February 2015
Cosmopolitan
• Cosmopolitan magazine is international
women fashion magazine that was first
published in 1886 in the united states. The
magazine was first introduced as a family
magazine then transformed into a literary
magazine before becoming a women's
magazine in the 1960’s.
• Its content includes articles of women's
issues, relationships, health, lifestyle, sex,
celebrities, fashion and beauty. The
magazine is printed in 35 languages and is
distributed in more than 110 countries.
• The monthly magazine, features a a
celebrity cover star that also has a photo
shoot and interview like fashion magazine
Company.
Cosmopolitan
• The median age for this
magazine is 34 with a majority
of the audience being married
with children. However,
cosmopolitan claims it is a
“bible for young women”.
• The magazine is aimed at young
women worldwide. They also
aim to open readers minds and
broaden their perspectives.
Website
• The website for company
magazine is a range of
articles that are relevant
to the audience of the
magazine. The home page
show a variety of new and
popular articles on the
website as well as the
different tabs at the top
to navigate to different
genres.
Magazine
• Cosmopolitan magazine has
a clean, crisp layout that is
easy to read. Images and
colours are used to support
an article and make the
pages more interesting.
• The magazine also features a
photo shoot and interview
with the celebrity cover star.
• Different texts are used to
highlight important quotes in
the article and create an idea
about the interviewee.
Magazine
• Illustrations are used to
make pages with lots of
information more exciting
and aesthetically pleasing.
• It also helps to distract away
from the amount of text on
the page.
• Two page advertisements are
used much like the LOVE
magazine however, the
products are from the high
street rather than designer.

Company and Cosmopolitan
• Company and Cosmopolitan magazine are
both published by Hearst magazines. There is
a lot of similarities between the presentation
and appearance of both magazines even down
to the same font and style of heading for the
magazine. The audience of both magazines is
slightly different and brings different elements
and styles into its content.

Glamour
• Glamour magazine is women's
fashion publication founded in 1939.
The monthly publication is now
published in numerous countries
around the world including Mexico,
Bulgaria and Poland.
• The magazine targets women from
18-49 and has a median age of 33.
Much like Cosmopolitan magazine,
Glamour features articles on fashion,
beauty, lifestyle, health, sex and
money.
• Glamour magazine is very interested
on celebrating women and has held
the women of the year awards since
1980 to show that women can be
powerful and successful.
Glamour
• Glamour's main audience are
female with only 4% of their
audience male. Also, more of
their audience is single with 43%
of them married. Almost half of
their audience also have
children. 68% of their audience is
middle class
• Glamour magazine claims it is
“Britain's number 1 women's
magazine”. This is a position it
has held since 2001 in terms of
sales.
• The magazine has 2,073,049 paid
monthly subscriptions and has
around 245,472 single sales.
• Glamour also has a huge following on al its
platforms and social media sites/apps.
Glamour
• This is a copy of Glamour's
2015 print rate card. As
you can see, it costs less to
advertise inserts in this
magazine compared to the
LOVE magazine.
• However, as Glamour
magazine has less pages
per issue but more issues
released a year, It costs
more for a full
page/double page spread
to advertise.
Website
• The website for Glamour
magazine has a simplistic layout
and features a lot of white. The
top of screen shows different
popular searches that you can
access instantly. The website also
offers a subscription to the
magazine and has a range of
adverts.
• In the news and opinion section,
you can see the latest articles.
• As you scroll down the websites
homepage, you can see the main
articles and their links.
Magazine
• A lot of colour is used in
Glamour magazine to keep
the audience interested. A
lot of colour is also used in
the background. A big
picture beside an article is
found throughout all the
magazine I have looked at.
• A collage style is used in this
magazine, like in company.
This helps to get a lot of
information across in a small
amount of words. It is also
easier for the audience to
understand.
Magazine
• Like most magazines, the
cover star has a photo shoot
and interview in the
magazine. Again, a full page
photo is placed along side
text. Different text sizes are
also used.
• A low cost brand has a make
up advert in this magazine
next to a high street clothes
page. This is clear the
audience are middle class
and would have a standard
income.

Magazine research

  • 2. Planning • For the print proposal, I have decided to create a magazine. I have a few different ideas/styles that I want to create. I will then choose one style to research and create. • Ideas; – Fashion magazine – Fitness/health magazine – Photography magazine – Music magazine – Art magazine – Interior design magazine
  • 3. Planning • I am going to create a fashion magazine as it is an area I am interested in and it is a popular genre. Also, I am familiar with a wide range of different fashion magazines.
  • 4. Bibliography • The LOVE magazine: – http://www.standard.co.uk/fashion/news/latest-recruit-cara- delevingne-announced-as-contributing-editor-for-love-magazine-as- kim-kardashian-stars-on-the-cover-9957611.html – http://www.justjared.com/photo-gallery/2564581/hailee-steinfeld- covers-love-magazine/fullsize/ – http://ftape.com/media/?p=53687 – http://styledo.se/love-magazine-issue-3-cover/ – http://thelovemagazine.co.uk/ – http://www.condenastinternational.com/country/united- kingdom/love/ – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOVE_(magazine) – http://www.fashiongonerogue.com/kendall-jenner-love-magazine-fw- 2014-cover/ – LOVE magazine 5th Anniversary edition 2013
  • 5. • The love magazine is a bi-annual British magazine that is famous for its unique and interesting spin on the typical glossy fashion mag. The raw look of the magazine is its main selling point as it stands out from its competitors on the market. Black and white photography is used throughout the magazine to create an aged and classic style. Also, the colour photography has a muted style. • This magazine also celebrates nudity and is a common feature of each issue, with the first issue presenting a naked Beth Ditto on the cover. This magazine also explores lots of different theme and styles of nudity from “the grittily pornographic to the breathtakingly artistic.” - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOVE_(magazine) • A range of different celebrities and models have featured on the covers of this magazine since its first issue in 2009. Rihanna, Kate Moss and Miley Cyrus are a few of celebrities who have had their own cover of the magazine. The love magazine is also famous for have multiple different covers for the same issues featuring a range of models in the same pose/style. LOVE magazine
  • 6. • Love magazine has a median age range of 28. Also, its main audience is women taking up 80% of sales. Its main distribution is in Britain, with 70% of its sales in the South East of London. The magazine has a middle class audience of 72% with 48% of that audience being upper class. • The magazine is also quite hard to find as it is only stocked by specialist magazine shops, bookshops, independents and top boutiques. It is however, stocked by high street store WH Smiths. • The website for the magazine, covers different events in fashion such as shows, new collections and trends. It also celebrates photographers and film makers work. The website also has short teaser videos for what the upcoming magazine will contain. • The magazine itself is more artistic and visual inspiring rather than filled with lots of articles like other fashion magazines. As the magazine is only released twice a year, it resembles more a book or catalogue in size and amount of content. LOVE magazine
  • 7. • In my research, I found this paragraph about what the magazine is by its creators. • The magazine is famous for being a much more artistic and inspiring collection of photographs that inspire its audience. The magazine is also a self proclaimed trend setter rather than a follower of styles. • Rather than being more article based, this magazine focuses more on imagery. Minimal amounts of text are used. This creates the idea of this magazine is more about fashion as art rather than to buy.
  • 8. • The LOVE magazine is heavily influenced and funded by its advertisers. The magazine charges a lot of money to companies who want to advertise in the magazine. As most of the advertisers are designer/high end brands this money is easily affordable. • Also, as this magazines only releases two issues a year, the company must be able to afford this type of advert as it will not reach such a wide audience compared to worldwide posters. LOVE magazine
  • 9. Website • This is the layout of the magazines website. It follows a very simple and easy to follow layout that has a polished/clean look. This also follows the ideals of the magazine itself as it has a minimalist approach to its images and articles. • I feel this website follows the same layout idea as popular social media app, Instagram, as it follows the 3 across rule making the images a collective but also so they stand out individually.
  • 10. Magazine • This layout of the LOVE magazine is very simple and has a lot of adverts with double page spreads. The brands that are advertised in this magazine are designer and have very artistic, simplistic and simple adverts. • These adverts show what the audience of the magazine is as most of the items in the adverts cost hundreds of pounds. • This also shows that the social class audience is high class. • The magazine contains a lot of full page images which is consistent throughout. • The articles in the magazine often have very small writing and are arranged into columns. The theme of the magazine is continued throughout
  • 11. Magazine • The magazine explores a lot of different themes and styles of photography. These are all collective and contribute to the unusual, unique style of the magazine. • A minimal amount of text is used throughout the magazine and is mainly focused on images. The look of the magazine is crazy as it explores black and white, vintage and bright colours all in one. • The magazine is very big and the size of a brochure as it includes lots of content.
  • 12. Magazine • Parts of the magazine appear to showcase works of art such as these images. However, they do actually support an article but also look like pieces of art because they are separated. • As you can see the theme of the article is continued with the layout and theme. • However, with the different themes, the main structure of the magazine is kept consistent for example with the text in columns.
  • 13. Bold title that is always at the top of the page. Plain background to help add emphasis the model Straight on view of model making eye contact with the camera. Title of shoot, name of participants and date Simple facts No extra info about what's inside
  • 14. Bibliography • Company magazine: – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_(magazine) – http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/08/15/company- magazine-closes-sugar-bliss-front-nuts_n_5681066.html – http://marinaandthediamondslive.com/discog/discog.html /marina-the-diamonds-company-magazine-march-2011- cover.jpeg – http://www.ppa.co.uk/news/industry/2012/01/company- magazine-gets-redesign/ – http://www.hearstmagazinesdirect.co.uk/company.html – http://www.company.co.uk/magazine-hq/behind-the- scenes/brand-new-february-company-magazine-restyled – Company magazine October 2014
  • 15. Company magazine • Company magazine was a monthly publication that featured news about fashion, celebrities and lifestyle. The magazine was published in the UK from 1978. Its final issue was released on October 2014 due to declining sales and is now an online only magazine. • The magazine usually features a celebrity cover star that also has a photo shoot and interview in the magazine. Around the cover you can find lots of subheadings that tell you what you can find in the magazine. • The magazine had a revamp in the beginning of 2012 to help failing sales and reflect the aspect of the fashion blogging world that has highly influenced the magazine in recent years. The magazine changed from a glossy, big print fashion magazine to a bite size, matt and illustrated magazine. This restyled also effected the content of the magazine as it made the magazine more fashion and beauty focused. The magazine also wanted to reflect street style and those of its audience rather than being a glossy high fashion magazine. • “It’s a total reinvention of the traditional women’s magazine and has been designed with our readers’ needs and demands in mind.” - http://www.ppa.co.uk/news/industry/2012/01/company- magazine-gets-redesign/
  • 16. Company magazine • The median age of this magazines audience is 26. This is after the revamp of the magazine. Also, the majority audience is females with only 3% of the audience male. The magazine does not really create content that a male audience would enjoy and is aimed at women. The magazine is also has a larger audience of middle class women compared to upper class. • The magazine is also aimed at British women, featuring fashion and beauty items found in England and that cater to this climate. • The magazine features articles are bloggers and career advice from women in their dream jobs as well as fashion, beauty and celebrities.
  • 17. Website • The website layout, I feel is very basic but not in a simple and classic way. It appears with a retro, block design but is easy to navigate. As the website is now the magazine, you can find new articles on the home page along with the most popular on a slide show at the top of the page. The tabs at the top separate the different areas of the magazine. • The website does not reflect the layout and creative, fun style of the magazine.
  • 18. Magazine • Company magazine has scrapbook feel as a range of different texts are used, colours and sizes throughout the magazine. Also, the material of this magazine is thicker, matt paper compared to the usual glossy, thin paper magazine. • The adverts in company magazine are of everyday items that will be used by the audience. Their price range is also a lot more affordable as the magazine is aimed at middle/working class.
  • 19. Bold, colourful title Different fonts and underlining Block of colour Small date and information Pictures to illustrate what's inside the magazine Famous celebrity cover star Subheadings spread over cover Magazines theme
  • 20. Bibliography • Cosmopolitan magazine: – http://www.sugarscape.com/celebs/news/a1073715/khlo e-kardashian-cosmopolitan-cover-justin-bieber-house/ – http://www.wetpaint.com/2013-08-05-nina-dobrev- covers-cosmopolitan-what/ – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmopolitan_(magazine) – https://art8amby.wordpress.com/tag/cosmopolitan- us/page/7/ – http://www.cosmomediakit.com/r5/showkiosk.asp?listing _id=4785158&category_code=cale&category_id=77110 – Cosmopolitan magazine February 2015
  • 21. Cosmopolitan • Cosmopolitan magazine is international women fashion magazine that was first published in 1886 in the united states. The magazine was first introduced as a family magazine then transformed into a literary magazine before becoming a women's magazine in the 1960’s. • Its content includes articles of women's issues, relationships, health, lifestyle, sex, celebrities, fashion and beauty. The magazine is printed in 35 languages and is distributed in more than 110 countries. • The monthly magazine, features a a celebrity cover star that also has a photo shoot and interview like fashion magazine Company.
  • 22. Cosmopolitan • The median age for this magazine is 34 with a majority of the audience being married with children. However, cosmopolitan claims it is a “bible for young women”. • The magazine is aimed at young women worldwide. They also aim to open readers minds and broaden their perspectives.
  • 23. Website • The website for company magazine is a range of articles that are relevant to the audience of the magazine. The home page show a variety of new and popular articles on the website as well as the different tabs at the top to navigate to different genres.
  • 24. Magazine • Cosmopolitan magazine has a clean, crisp layout that is easy to read. Images and colours are used to support an article and make the pages more interesting. • The magazine also features a photo shoot and interview with the celebrity cover star. • Different texts are used to highlight important quotes in the article and create an idea about the interviewee.
  • 25. Magazine • Illustrations are used to make pages with lots of information more exciting and aesthetically pleasing. • It also helps to distract away from the amount of text on the page. • Two page advertisements are used much like the LOVE magazine however, the products are from the high street rather than designer.
  • 26. Bold title at the top of the page Different texts Blocks of colour Small date Celebrity cover star Small subheadings all over the cover
  • 27. Company and Cosmopolitan • Company and Cosmopolitan magazine are both published by Hearst magazines. There is a lot of similarities between the presentation and appearance of both magazines even down to the same font and style of heading for the magazine. The audience of both magazines is slightly different and brings different elements and styles into its content.
  • 28. • 29. Glamour • Glamour magazine is women's fashion publication founded in 1939. The monthly publication is now published in numerous countries around the world including Mexico, Bulgaria and Poland. • The magazine targets women from 18-49 and has a median age of 33. Much like Cosmopolitan magazine, Glamour features articles on fashion, beauty, lifestyle, health, sex and money. • Glamour magazine is very interested on celebrating women and has held the women of the year awards since 1980 to show that women can be powerful and successful.
  • 30. Glamour • Glamour's main audience are female with only 4% of their audience male. Also, more of their audience is single with 43% of them married. Almost half of their audience also have children. 68% of their audience is middle class • Glamour magazine claims it is “Britain's number 1 women's magazine”. This is a position it has held since 2001 in terms of sales. • The magazine has 2,073,049 paid monthly subscriptions and has around 245,472 single sales.
  • 31. • Glamour also has a huge following on al its platforms and social media sites/apps.
  • 32. Glamour • This is a copy of Glamour's 2015 print rate card. As you can see, it costs less to advertise inserts in this magazine compared to the LOVE magazine. • However, as Glamour magazine has less pages per issue but more issues released a year, It costs more for a full page/double page spread to advertise.
  • 33. Website • The website for Glamour magazine has a simplistic layout and features a lot of white. The top of screen shows different popular searches that you can access instantly. The website also offers a subscription to the magazine and has a range of adverts. • In the news and opinion section, you can see the latest articles. • As you scroll down the websites homepage, you can see the main articles and their links.
  • 34. Magazine • A lot of colour is used in Glamour magazine to keep the audience interested. A lot of colour is also used in the background. A big picture beside an article is found throughout all the magazine I have looked at. • A collage style is used in this magazine, like in company. This helps to get a lot of information across in a small amount of words. It is also easier for the audience to understand.
  • 35. Magazine • Like most magazines, the cover star has a photo shoot and interview in the magazine. Again, a full page photo is placed along side text. Different text sizes are also used. • A low cost brand has a make up advert in this magazine next to a high street clothes page. This is clear the audience are middle class and would have a standard income.
  • 36. Tagline/sellin g point Big, bold title at the top of the page Small date Different colours and text sizes. Celebrity cover star Plain background Pictures of what's inside
  • 37. Summary • Target audience of young women • Middle class • Clean, crisp, classic layouts • Easy to read • Variety of texts, sizes and colour • Variety of content • Celebrity cover star • Supporting website and social media • Range of fashion and beauty products • Big pictures to support articles • Small text in columns • Adverts for brand that meet the target audience social status
