Empire is a well-known professional magazine which is why it has enough loyal consumers to place the masthead behind the image. This shows they are an established brand. The word ‘Empire’ reinforces the fact that it hold monopoly over the filmmagazine market. Their well-established ‘Empire’ is able to bring to the table blockbuster films and high profile characters. This is how they appeal to their audience. Colour: The use of red, black and white seems to be a house style convention. The use of red is very common within ‘Empire’ Magazine, the masthead is red most of the time. This is bold and represents their dominance over other magazine. It also has symbiotic links between the main images as he is wearing red. The black background is a way of making everything in the foreground pop out even more the use of black also allows the main image to stand out. The use of ‘steel’ and ‘superhero’ are in the colour of metal steel this reinforces the theme of superheroes. The use of his dark red on his cape and the ‘S’ on his chest can suggest bloodshed. Sell-lines: In terms of sell-lines this issue is mainly being focused around superheroes such as Wolverine, Ironman 3 and Lone Ranger. Super hero films and marvel films in general large amounts of revenue. There is a use of classic font rather than bold text. This suggests the fact that these films are world-class. Main-image: The main image consists of a superman character who is a ‘Man of Steel’. The main image if of a masculine hero which is being advertised for a new superman film. Within this magazine the actor is in character mode which is why his body language and posture is straight and he looks to his right confidently just like a superhero. This specific issue is dedicated to a superhero preview which is mentioned in the skyline. A segment like this proves that this magazine reaches out to a wide range of audiences. Layout: The general layout of this magazine is conventional the masthead is placed at the top centre in a big sized font as the brand should be made aware first. The barcode is placed at the bottom left hand corner because we are meant to view the front cover and what it has to offer without the price in mind. Costume: This use of costume the character is wearing reinforces his superhero character. Superman is big and strong which how his body language is shown. The contrast between the blue and red with his costume can represent the balance he must hold between good and bad. The ‘S’ symbol on his chest is what makes him unique which is shown in his posture as well.
