“ Life is easier in a community blessed with a substantial stock of social capital. In the first place, networks of civic engagement foster sturdy norms of generalized reciprocity and encourage the emergence of social trust . Such networks facilitate coordination and communication , amplify reputations , and thus allow dilemmas of collective action to be resolved. When economic and political negotiation is embedded in dense networks of social interaction , incentives for opportunism are reduced … [they] broaden the participants‘ sense of self, developing ‘I’ into ‘we’ … ”

Editor's Notes

  1. Thank you so much for having me here today. This is my first trip to Montana and I have loved being here yesterday and today – learning more about Montana libraries and especially about the new strides the state library is taking to review and support continuing education for MT librarians – very exciting and I’ve enjoyed hearing about those new plans – as well as I’ve been very inspired by everyone I’ve met and talked to since I’ve been here – such a strong interest in learning and sharing – maybe because resources are scarce and there’s even more opportunity to collaborate and help each other along.
