Macbeth Essay Plan
Writing an essay on the topic of "Macbeth Essay Plan" can be a challenging yet intellectually
stimulating task. The complexity lies in the multifaceted nature of Shakespeare's play "Macbeth,"
which delves into profound themes such as ambition, power, guilt, and the consequences of
unchecked desire. Crafting a well-structured essay plan requires a comprehensive understanding
of the play, its characters, and the intricate relationships between them.
Firstly, one must analyze the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, exploring their
motivations, internal conflicts, and transformations throughout the narrative. This involves a
careful examination of key scenes and monologues, deciphering the nuances of language and
symbolism employed by Shakespeare.
Next, the essay plan should address the broader themes embedded in "Macbeth," considering
how they resonate with the socio-political context of Shakespeare's time and their relevance in
contemporary society. Thematic exploration requires critical thinking and the ability to draw
connections between the play and broader philosophical or historical concepts.
The essay plan should also incorporate a discussion of the play's dramatic elements, including its
structure, symbolism, and the use of literary devices. Analyzing the play's language, imagery, and
the interplay between different characters is essential for constructing a nuanced and insightful
essay.
Furthermore, one must consider the critical perspectives on "Macbeth" and incorporate scholarly
opinions to strengthen the argument. This involves conducting research and synthesizing various
interpretations to present a well-rounded analysis.
In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic of "Macbeth Essay Plan" demands a combination of
literary analysis, historical context, and critical thinking. The intricacies of Shakespeare's work
require a deep dive into the characters, themes, and dramatic elements to construct a coherent
and compelling essay plan.

A Brief Note On The Italian Shoe Industry Essay
2.Demand conditions If the local market for a product is larger and more demanding
at home than in foreign markets, local firms potentially put more emphasis on
improvements than foreign companies. This will potentially increase the global
competitiveness of local exporting companies. A more demanding home market can
thus be seen as a driver of growth, innovation and quality improvements.
3.Related and Supporting Industries
When local supporting industries and suppliers are competitive, home country
companies will potentially get more cost efficient and receive more innovative parts
and products. This will potentially lead to greater competitiveness for national firms.
For instance, the Italian shoe industry benefits from a highly competent pool of
related businesses and industries, which has strengthened the competitiveness of the
Italian shoe industry world wide.
4.Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry The structure and managementsystems of
firms in different countries can potentially affect competitiveness. By using Porter s
diamond, business leaders may analyze which competitive factors may reside in their
company s home country, and which of these factors may be exploited to gain global
competitive advantages. Business leaders can also use the Porter s diamond model
during a phase of internationalization, in which leaders may use the model to analyze
whether or not the home market factors support the process of internationalization,
and whether or not the
The Positive Effects Of Retainment
There have been many studies performed in recent years over the effects of
retainment. The reasoning behind why a student is being retained can be a big
deciding factor on whether it will end with success or not. When a child is behind
their peers because of age or numerous absences, retainment is an option for them. At
an older level, kids have a higher rate of success than those who have been retained
(Davis School District, 2011). When repeating a grade, they can have success the next
year, and can gain more confidence. However, retainment works best for students
when at a young, lower elementary age. Research has shown that retaining a student
can often point them in a negative direction. Students can experience bad impacts in

What is Bhopal Gas tragedy?
The industrial catastrophe that occurred on the midnight of December 2, 1984 at
Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal, India was the worst
industrial accident in the world. The official count was around 3000 deaths. This is a
complex case, involving critics from all sides accusing the Government of India, U.S.
Government, and Union Carbide and the workers that handle the case. It was 2 3

Essay on Thomas Malthus and the Principle of Population
1.Introduction
This essay deals with Thomas Malthus and the first two chapters of his Essay on the
Principle of Population . At first I will provide a short biographical note on Malthus
and I will also mention his main achievements. Then, a summary of Malthus main
ideas of the first two chapters of mentioned work follows. Afterward, the essay
concludes with a personal note.
2.A short biography
Thomas Robert Malthus was born in 1766 (course textbook, n. d.) in Surrey,
England, as the sixth son of a wealthy intellectual family and he died in 1834
(Weikard, n. d.).
He was mainly concerned with population growth and poverty in the English society
of his time. It was an answer to the precarious human situation back then. Malthus ...

This also puts a limit on the amount of procreation possible, but however, all species
strive to surpass these limitations (Malthus, p. 2). In this aspect, human beings are not
any different from plants or animals, but in contrast to them they do not only act out
of instinct. Additionally, they use their reasoning to determine whether they will be
able to care sufficiently for their children (Malthus, p. 2).
Malthus states that there are certain checks on population and points out that there is
no society without any check applied. An unchecked population increases in a
geometrical ratio, what means that it doubles itself every twenty five years. Instead,
the available food does not increase geometrically, but gradually diminishes, because
of the limited amount of fertile land. In contrast to the population, the agricultural
production, under favourable circumstances, is able to only increase in an
arithmetical ratio (Malthus, p. 6). A gap between population growth and the amount
of food available rises. As a result, to further increase the food supply, it is necessary
to improve the quality of the soil (Malthus, p. 4). Malthus points out that there is still
land which is not cultivated, even in Europe, and that especially in this region it is
possible to enhance the soil quality due to the progress of the industrialization, but it
will be gradually diminishing (Malthus, p.
Mass Media in General and Newspapers
PART A: INTRODUCTION 1. Rationale Mass media in general and newspapers
in particular nowadays play a very important role in our lives. Many people even
say that living in the world without newspapers is like living in an isolated island.
Newspapers help us become informed citizens and make better decision by
providing a lot of facts. Hard news stories, vital statistics, weather, sports stories
and scores and even calendars are examples of items that help inform readers. Some
newspaper articles help interpret or explain the meaning of news to readers.
Besides, newspapers provide services to readers that is providing information help
readers solve business, home, recreation and daily living problems. Moreover, some

The third part (Part C) is the conclusion which presents the results of the study with
suggestions for translators and for further researches. PART B: DEVELOPMENT
Chapter I: Theoretical Background 1. Newspaper headlines 1.1. What is newspaper
headline? Conventionally, it is believed that newspapers have more readers than
any other kind of written text. According to Van Dijk (1986), for most citizens,
news is perhaps the type of written discourse with which they are confronted most
frequently (p. 156). In the newspaper it is the headline that has the highest
readership. It summarizes the content of a story, and entices an audience into
reading the article. According to Ungerer (2000), a headline describes the essence
of a complicated news story in a few words. It informs quickly and accurately and
arouses the reader s curiosity (p. 48). Newspaper headlines are particularly important
for the way readers comprehend a news text, they are markers that monitor attention,
perception and the reading process (Van Dijk, 1988). According to Danuta R. (1998),
headline is a unique type of text. It has a range of functions that specifically dictate its
shape, content, and structure and it operates within a range of restrictions that limited
the freedom of the writer. In other words, headline should
Essay on Homosexuality and the Anglican Church
In recent years, the issue of homosexuality has been a controversial and frequently
discussed topic within the Anglican tradition. The Lambeth conference is an
assembly of bishops of the Anglican Communion and is convened by the Archbishop
of Canterbury. The conference allows for a collaborative and consultation function
which allows for relevant issues to be discussed within the communion ( Lambeth
Conferences ). The argument over homosexualitywas discussed predominately as a
communion wide issue at the 1998 Lambeth conference, and it was concluded that
homosexual practice was incompatible with scripture ( Lambeth Conferences ).
Whether locally or globally, debates typically arise around the issue of
homosexuality, and if should be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prior to the revolution, the Episcopal Church in the U.S existed nearly 200 years
without bishops; this was due in part to American resistance and the slow reaction of
the Church of England (Ward 52). In 1622, the Church of England became
established in Virginia; a crown colony, which had governor appointed by the king
(Ward 48). After the revolution Anglicanismin America was in a disarray, some
believers fled the country, while others were faced with the question of how to give
shape to their community of worship under changed circumstances (Linzey and
Kirker 3). Eventually the Protestant Episcopal Church was formed ( Ward 54).
Christianity was a religion that grew alongside with America, this allowed the
religion to become adjusted to local adaptations, and grow and change along with
various civil rights movements. In Africa, Anglicanism first accompanied the
British involvement in the Atlantic slave trade (Ward 112). Missionary movements
in areas such as Nigeria and Uganda, which have a strong Anglican presence,
helped the religion to prosper. Christianity first arrived to Uganda in the 1870 s,
during this period the area was under strong Muslim influence and was popular for
Arab slave traders ( African Anglicans ). The King of the region practiced the Arab
custom of pederasty, and when Christian courtiers and pages did not oblige, hundreds
were killed in martyrdoms ( African Anglicans ). Still the churches flourished and
E.E Evans-Pritchard Once Said, “I Have Often Been
Asked
E.E Evans Pritchard once said, I have often been asked whether, when I was among
the Azande, I got to accept their ideas about witchcraft. I suppose you can say I
accepted them. I had no choice. In my own culture, I rejected Azande notions of
witchcraft. In their culture, I accepted them. In a kind of way, I believed them. In the
documentary Sir Edward Evans Pritchard: Strange Beliefs, the research of British
social anthropologist E.E. Evans Pritchard on the Zande tribe of central Africa and
the Nuer tribe of Sudan is highlighted. As a good anthropologist should, Evans
Pritchard immersed himself in his fieldwork and attempted to look at foreign cultural
values from the perspective of the culturehe was observing.

He is deeply democratic and is easily roused to violence. His turbulent spirit finds
any restraint irksome and no man recognizes a superior . This cultural attitude
towards independence has led the Nuer to function without a real system of
governance. While there are chiefs in Nuer society, the role of chief tends to be
limited to that of a mediator.
The findings of E.E. Evans Pritchard serve as an example of the importance of
ethnographic fieldwork and cultural relativism. People have an inherent tendency to
drift towards ethnocentrism if they do not keep an open mind about the legitimacy of
foreign cultural ideas. Enculturalization occurs from the very beginning of one s life.
When one grows up in a culture that praises traits that are deemed as beneficial and
discourages behaviors that are seen as harmful, one tends to develop similar beliefs
on these traits and behaviors. Different cultures encourage different outlooks on
society. This is the result of the environment a culture exists in. In many tribal
societies, one of the primary influences on culture is the physical environment.
However, in technologically advanced societies that worry less about satisfying needs
and more about fulfilling desires, social aspects are perhaps more significant. For
example, note the difference between American and Japanese culture. American
culture promotes individualism and free speech. Many Americans tote the
Constitution and the Bill of Rights
Advertising Appeal Of Sex Is Victoria s Secret
Every commercial appeals to something; whether its nature, guidance or even
attention. People have almost never notice this except when they are browsing
through a magazine and notice a Calvin Klein add. When a commercial is showing
bras, panties, and underwear most of the time the company is using the appeals to
sex. This is completely obvious just by looking at Calvin Klein ads. Some
commercials sell products that look too sexual that it makes the general public
uncomfortable. the ads from Dolce Gabbana sometimes can come to people s mind.
Most of these ads have been so sexualized it makes family time awkward. Most
common commercial that uses the appealof sex is Victoria s Secret.
Advertising appeals try to use people s emotions to attract a certain type of
audience, whether it is children, young adults, and sometimes even parent. Big
companies try to lure people in be using the general public s emotions to the
company s advantage. Advertising comes up all the time from the time a person
wakes up to the time they go to sleep. Obviously the media has come up with good
ideas to pop up commercial into everyday life like the internet, television,
billboards, and newspapers. Many companies have found ways to sell their products
these ways are called appeals. For example, the appeal of achievement is used in
companies like Adidas and Under Armour. Some other companies try to sell escape
like the companies that make 5 gum and York Peppermint Patty. there are companies

Combustion Of Fireworks Chemistry
Don t trust atoms, they make up everything. This is true for the reaction witnessed in
the combustion of fireworks. These pretty colours and lights are the result of a
chemical reaction occurring, that ignites the firework and turns into a colourful
flame. This phenomenon can be tested inside a laboratory using similar
circumstances to that of a firework in the air. The test involves using chemicals,
similar to what is seen in fireworks and burning those chemicals under a blue flame,
which burns at 1500C. The purpose of this experiment was to observe the
characteristic flame colours produced by the metal salts burned under a blue flame.
In chemistry, a salt is an ionic compound that can be formed by the neutralization
reaction of an acid and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because these levels are unstable, the electrons incline to fall down to the levels
where they were before, releasing energy as they do so. This energy is released as
light energy, and as the amount of energy released varies from other metal ions, it
leads to the characteristic colours given by each metal ion. Metal salts are used to
the produce the colour seen; a fuel is needed to allow the ion to burn; a chemical
which provides oxygen for the combustion of the fuel; and a chlorine/ binding
chemical to help strengthen; and hold the mixture together. For example, if Sodium
is placed into a flame, the sodium ions, collect all the energy given from the flame,
and then is exerted out when the ions start to die. A sodium atom in an unexcited
state has the structure 3s1, but when placed in the flame the sodium will give an
orange ting to the flame which results in the ions jumping into the next levels and
then eventually falling back from the 3p1 level to their normal 3s1 level. While it is
unknown who actually invented our found out the flame test, it can all be traced back
to Michael Faraday (Born 22nd September 1791 Died 25th August
Racism In Ernest Gaines s A Lesson Before Dying
Racism is the belief that innate differences between races dictate cultural
achievement and includes the idea that one race is above another. This is a
universal problem and is the root of discrimination. Lately, police officers face
accusations of racial profiling and being responsible for several unjust murders. The
deaths that are due to the victims skin pigment recognize that social oppression is an
active practice. In the book A Lesson Before Dying, author Ernest Gaines reveals
how racismis an oppressive force through multiple characters and situations.

of the novel, Wiggins comprehends how capital punishment and the church are not
places of justice or peace; they simply aim to embitter his race with false

Women s Role And Status Of Women
Women in Pakistan
Women in Pakistan are more likely to face system subordination, where patriarchal
values are embedded in local traditions and culture. Due to the interconnection of
gender with other forms of exclusion in the society, the role and status of women
cannot be considered homogenous. There is a great deal of diversity in the status of
women across regions, classes, the rural/urban divide caused by the lack of socio
economic development and the impact of feudal, tribal, and capitalist social
formations in women s lives.
Pakistan is a society which is predominantly patriarchal. Men and women have been
forced to live into two separate worlds. For a woman, the home is supposed to be
the legitimate ideological and physical space for her. Men on the other hand are
expected to dominate outside the house. This false ideological demarcation between
public and private, inside and outside world has been maintained with the notion of
honor and the use of purdah in Pakistan. The honor of the family is usually linked
with the women s sexual behavior, meaning that their sexuality is considered a
potential threat. Therefore, for reason such as these, women mobility is strictly
restricted and controlled through the use of purdah , gender segregation, and the use
of violence against them.
In the social context, women in Pakistan lack social status and value because of
negation of their roles as providers and producers in the society. In a country like
Pakistan, there is

The Law of Contract Essay
Introduction
The case study which I have chosen is Case Study 4. A contract is a legally
enforceable agreement which the courts will enforce and it is between two or
more legally distinct parties which is called a Bilateral Agreement, e.g. a buyer
and a seller in a contract for the sales of goods. However it is possible for more
than two individuals to be involved in a contract e.g. partners in a firm or
shareholders in a limited company which is called a Multilateral Agreement. A
legally enforceable agreement or contract has two basic elements an offer and an
acceptance of that offer. This can be expressed in a simple formula as:
Offer + Acceptance = Contract

An invitation to treat can most effectively be explained with reference to the phrase
make me an offer which I may or may not accept . This is a marketing tactic which
provokes an offer. This was accepted by Louise it was not an offer to her it was her
who made the offer to buy it. As Louise sees the advert displayed on the shop
window which is an offer to her, by believing that the price is really that low priced
of such a popular and expensive product by not wasting more time she quickly goes
inside the shop and accepts to buy the goods. But however she is told by the sales
rep that this is a misrepresentation as the advertisement is wrongly priced and it is
not for ВЈ25 but is for ВЈ250.
Misrepresentation
A misrepresentation occurs when a party states a false statement of fact, or
misleading conduct which forms a contract as the other party is encouraged or
induced to enter into an agreement. It is usually after the contract has been formed
that the party who relied on the statement will discover that it was factually false. A
contract could also result in being voidable in misrepresentation. It is also up to
Louise who is the victim of misrepresentation if she wants to take any steps against
the company. The innocent party which is Louise would not have entered into a
contract at first place if she had known that the statement made on the poster outside
the shop window was in fact false. She also has evidence of the poster outside the
shop window which
Analysis Of The Book The Palace
For several weeks, Proserpina had stayed with King Pluto in his palace. She spent
most of her days ogling his tremendous rose gardens. She loved picking the roses
and finding the small white pearl that lay within the rare ones. Red roses were her
favourite, their lush, bright petals never drooping or falling, and in some
circumstances, they smelled sweeter than any of the other roses. Proserpinas favourite
rose of all, however, was one made entirely of rubies and emeralds. The red rubies
made up the petals and the emeralds became the stem and a leaf. It was kept inside
of a large glass case, where only its beauty was allowed. Every morning after Pluto
brought Proserpina to his castle, he would hear her wake up in the early hours of
the day, right when the sun began to rise, and watch her pick flowers through his
large window overlooking his land. He was lucky that she did not know who he was,
the God of the Underworld, she only thought he was the king of diamonds and stones.
Plutohad a plan, once he got her to eat something, she would be trapped in his
kingdom forever, his underworld. For now, however, he had to just watch as she
deteriorated from hunger. It wasn t that bad to be brutally honest, he s seen much
worse. Since staying there, Proserpina had vowed not to eat anything that she
found, or anything that was given to her. She was afraid that if she ate anything, it
would deprive her of all of her bad memories and make her forget all of her cares.

Black Lung
The black lung movement was a movement formed in the late 1960 s in which the
miners fought for the health benefits to cover black lung disease. Black lung is
directly caused by mining and working with coal. Mildred Mullins wrote this poem
and hung it on the coffin of her dead husband in the Capital to display what was
going on, Compensation we are asking,
While alive and still gasping;
When
life is o er and hymns are sung,
Then they ll know we have black lung.(

they should be compensated for it. The coalcompanies felt that miningdid not cause
this lung disease and that the miners were just making it up.

Blasting itself produced immense quantities of mineral particles. The common
practice of returning to the work face soon after the detonation of charges meant
entering an area filled with particulate matter. (Derickson 3) Also, as labors
transported, unloaded, and cleaned the extracted material dust was inhaled even
though they were away from the mine. So no matter what technique used the coal
dust still made it in the air and into the miners lungs. There were no safety
regulations in place about how long to wait after blowing up coal, no regulations
about how many particulates in the air were safe, no mask or safety precautions
and no mandatory venting. Although some of these things were easily usable to
the safety the company felt it was too costly. An elaborate system of fans and
blowers was too costly , so the miner had to pay for the bad ventilating by miners
asthma and other ailments caused by bad air. (Derickson 4) Basically the coal
operators did not care enough about the miners safety to provide vents and things
that could have helped the air quality. Once black lung was discovered the
movement began. Three studies done by the U.S. Public Health Service between
1924 and 1945 failed to bring recognition of black lung as a problematic condition.
American medical opinion was that miner s asthma reflected a normal condition of
mine work and actually posed no serious problems. Some doctors even went so far
as to claim that coal

success would be someone who has a high paying job or is in the upper class.
Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Outliers: The Story of Success, approaches the
concept of success in a different and unique way. Gladwell discusses how
opportunities, cultural legacy, and hard work all coincide with each other to produce
real success. He uses mostly logic and multiple unrelated anecdotes to support and
provide evidence for his statements. Gladwell s main argument is that although hard
work and talent are essential for success, one s given opportunities and cultural
legacy is what really... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example that he talks about is The Matthew Effect . The Matthew Effect is
shown through the Medicine Hat Tigers elite hockey team of Canada; if one was
to look at the roster, which includes their birth dates, they would find something
quite peculiar. Most of the players were born in the early months of the year, for
instance, January, February, and March. The cutoff date for making the elite team
is also January 1st; meaning that all the hockey players born close to the cutoff
date would be enrolled for the next year and therefore, have a whole year on people
born in December of that same year. Not only are the early month players
physically developing more quickly, but they also get more practice, which causes
them to be more successful than others and have a huge advantage. The same results
also appeared in Czech junior soccer teams as the cut off date was also January 1st.
Gladwell states, ...the Czech soccer coaches might as well have told everyone born
after mid summer that they should pack their bags and go home (27). Overall, this
effect helps contribute to Gladwell s main statement about opportunity, which is that
the opportunities presented to you stem from the month, year, or era you were born
in, your culture, and your family background. Sometimes they are even presented to
you just by luck but, with either case, to become successful, you must be able to
notice your opportunities and then invest yourself in
Argumentative Essay On Police Behavior
Police behavior has been a continuous controversy in the United States.
Communities have begun to fear law enforcement and can potentially rebel against
police forces because of the way these acts are surfacing the media. Police officers
are sought out to be the people in charge of containing chaos in society, but most of
the time, now, they are the root of the chaos. For the most part, I believe some police
officers know how to properly hold their composure when it comes to dealing with
difficult situations. I believe this is solely due to the levels of education and skills
new recruitees are obtaining. There are other instances in which I believe that not
all officers deserve to be police officers. I have often seen television shows about
what police forces consist of, in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The officer seemed to have lost himself and directed unprofessional behavior
towards this individual. As participants of the law, officers should be able to hold
their professionalism and composure as it is a crucial component to this field of
work. There is not a moment in which officers are not under the public eye. Although
the criminal justice world involves lots of political views and opinions, the political
views of the law enforcement community should be kept unbiased. One can argue
that expressing political views or even personal opinions can affect officers ability
to perform efficiently. Since black male shootings, there are people that believe
that certain groups of officers, such as either groups of white or black cops, base
their work on race. A possible way to change this opinion towards officers is to
expose all officers to community policing and become more involved with these
causes. Officers from different descents can prove to society that race is not
factored in police work. Also, educating officers in the field is crucial in the
progression of police
Sample For Admission Essay
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I am applying for admission to the graduate program in the Electrical and Computer
Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University. I intend to pursue research
in the fields of Signal Processing and Machine Learning. I am particularly interested
in working on real world problems and applications which combine concepts from
signal processing and machine learning with computational modelling and statistical
inference. I am also interested in developing applications of signal and image
processing using machine learning methods.
My interest in signal processing stems from the breadth of its applicability, both as
an indispensable tool for problem solving and its easy integration with other areas of
engineering. My earliest recollection of being influenced by it is during the second
year of my under graduation, when I attended a guest lecture on Medical Imaging:
Perspectives on Perception and Diagnostics . It was a discussion on computational
imaging methods for understanding the working of human brain and integrating them
with machine learning for diagnosis and treatment of brain disorders. Still new to
electrical engineering, I got caught up in the idea that if diagnosis is possible by
collecting various traits of functioning, then even creating such functioning should be
possible from those traits. In other words, the idea of being able to utilize information
from the real world to create mathematical models that can emulate intelligent human
DNR Order (Do Not Resuscitate)
A controversy that I personally face is a DNR order (Do not Resuscitate). It is an
order written by a licensed physician. DNR is usually decided in a consultation
with a patient or a surrogate of the patient such as a parent. This choice decides
whether a patient will receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR in case of
cardiac and respiratory arrest. Many people struggle with the idea of someone not
wanting to be saved but what some people don t understand is that it s not about
saving the patient but allowing them to pass peacefully without problems.
A DNR is one of the most debated legal contracts practiced in the medicine field.
Basically, it means that if something happens to you and the situation calls for
medical intervention in order to reclaim consciousness and remain alive, you have the
power to dictate whether or not that intervention actually occurs. EMT s, doctors,
nurses and other medical personnel must stand by your wishes. If they fail to do so
they could be lawfully punished.
A strong number of people who have a DNR are elderly. Another solid number of
people who have a DNR have a very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many see it as a proxy for euthanasia. But many others also see it as a way of
suicide, due to the belief that it does not take advantage of the uses of medical
personnel and some of the tools available in medicine.
A do not resuscitate order is a complex, ethical and moral dilemma. From a medical
personnel point of view, when his/her patient is put into a situation where death is
highly likely or already reached, they will do whatever is necessary to make you
survive in that moment. But that doesn t mean that you will continue to survive long
term. Sometimes when a doctor saves you in that instance its only for an allotted
time, maybe even a couple of hours, sometimes they break your ribs in order to
make sure you survive a couple of more
Trapped in Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton Essay
Many people oppose society due to the surroundings that they face and the
obstacles that they encounter. Set in the bleak winter landscape of New England,
Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton is the story of a poor, lonely man, his wife Zeena,
and her cousin Mattie Silver. Ethan the protagonist in this novel, faces many
challenges and fights to be with the one he really loves. Frome was trapped from
the beginning ever since Mattie Silver came to live with him and his wife. He soon
came to fall in lovewith her, and out of love with his own wife. He was basically
trapped in the instances of his life, society s affect on the relationship, love, poverty,
illness, disability, and life. From the beginning of the story, society opposed Ethan

Mattie and Ethan never follow their love due to Ethan s morals and the respect he
has for his marriage to Zeena. He wants Zeena to be well and he takes care of her
when she is ill. Frome s feelings for Mattie never oscillate and he wants to be with
this woman who is not his wife. Even though Ethan only had one night with Mattie
alone, he cannot help but think of what he has done as he sits in the kitchen.
Mattie presents minority, beauty, and good health all of which Zeena does not
possess. It seems he favors the more hip, young, and beautiful women than dull,
boring, and unattractive women. Edith Wharton uses Mattie to express isolation
and being lonely. She comes to the country with ribbons in her hair and more joy
in herself. She wanted to free Ethan from the terrible society he lived in. Life in
Starkfield is bleak and boring. No one comes outside or enjoys themselves. This is
mainly why Ethan wants to escape the barren and poor neighborhood. Ethan is
also isolated as well. He opposes society mainly because he cannot be with the one
he loves and he doesn t want to ruin his marriage to Zeena as well. When Zeena
falls ill, she goes to the doctor for a couple of days and returns only to find her
expensive china now ruined. Angry, she tells Ethan that she needs more hired help
and plans to send Mattie away. Upset, Ethan did not know what to do . He decided
to write a letter to Zeena telling her to run the farm and be by herself. However, he

Black White Blues
Black, Brown and White Blues Big Bill Broonzys
Big Bill Broonzys has been singing protest sharpened songs since the 1920 s from
country blues and evolving to urban style blues, but he is ultimately known for his
traditional folk blues. As a well known artist that appealed to the black working
class, Big Bill became a leader and key figure in the development of blues music.
Given that Big Bill had a long history in various styles of blues and being an African
American born in the South that held jobs such as a sharecropper, I believe that Big
Bill had a deep passion when singing such songs as Black, Brown and White Blues .
Specifically, I can hear the tone of sadness or anger in the song because of the plain
disrespect the United States had towards black people based solely on their skin

bus passed into a state that required they move, even though the law did not. This is
a form of direct action because it forced the government to enforce the laws in place
and also promoted the civil rights movement. The help of media depicting the cruel
manner of police forces against protestors also helped force the government to take
action to clean up America s image in order to appeal to countries in the east under
the threat of communist Soviet Union. In my eyes we owe a lot to the Soviet Union
because the threat of them turning more countries communist made or forced the

Evaluate and critique the different arguments for the decline in warfare since 1990.
In the last decade, discussion of the decline of war has dramatically escalated. This
essay evaluates and critiques three major arguments for the decline in warfare since
1990, examining the human nature approach of Steven Pinker, the shorter term
factors proposed by John Mueller and the alternative New Wars theory championed
by Mary Kaldor. In combination, these approaches provide a general summary of the
major strains of declinist literature and demonstrate the challenges of assessing the
changing political violence and armed conflict after the Cold War.

John Mueller makes a claim even bolder than a decline in war, arguing that war has
ceased, or nearly ceased, to exist. He argues that the general decline in inter state war
lies in the changing attitudes towards war. Mueller contends that up until the early
20th century, war was seen in a positive light, but European attitudes changed
profoundly after WWI, and that shift of opinion was dramatically reinforced by
WWII. Mueller explains the particular fall in civil wars in the 1990s as a result of
improvements in governance and policing in developing countries. Thus these factors
in combination explain the recent decline in all wars. Mueller rejects other alternative
arguments for the decline of war, including economic interdependence and
institutional incentives, on the basis of causality and questionable impact. Critics of
his theories point out that the traditional war conception they are based on excludes
any non state warfare with under 1000 deaths, and thus explanations of the recent
decline do not account for major instances of political violence such as the Rwandan
Genocide. However, Mueller refutes these critiques with the view that such political
violence is merely opportunistic thugs who are the residual combatants . Thus,
Mueller s claim that war has ceased to exist is qualified, particularly in light of
political changes after the cold war.
Comparatively, Mary Kaldor attempts to address the methodological issues of

The Debt Of The Third World Countries
Is it possible for the first world countries to forgive the debt of the third world
countries? It is possible if the first world countries can afford to lose money and
resources to help other countries. If the first world countries do not cancel the debt
then the third world countries debt and loans is going to increase. It going to cause
the value of the money currencies to drop and the cost of the debt is going to rise.
The debt is also causing the third worldcountries to delay from increasing their own
economic and other benefits. In other word it is preventing the third world countries
from developing into a rich and resourceful country just like the first world
countries. This causes the third world countries to borrow money from the first
world countries in order to resolve the debt and need to borrow money to privatize
the communal resource. The debt of the third world countries need to be forgiven
because of the increase in debt, economic and borrowing money. The third world
countries debt is only going to increase if the first world countries do not cancel the
debt. The main reason that the debt is going to increase is that the third world
countries had made loans with the first world countries and the loans continue to
increase. According to Vanessa Baird, Most loans to the third world have to be
repaid in hard currencies; and hard currencies are stable currencies: that means their
value does not change much. (1) This makes it difficult for developing

The Prevention Of Neonatal Health Care Providers
Neonatal health care providers do their best to ensure the environment where the
tiniest of patients need to grow emulates the dark, muted place that they were used to.
However, these patients are the ones that need high tech equipment to assist with
their care. This equipment comes with many different audible indicators meant to
assist the bedside clinician in keeping these patients safe. These sounds contribute to
the noise level in the environment meant to heal. Amidst the worry about patient s
exposure to what many times is too loud noise, health care providers, too, are
exposed to the constant cacophony of bings, beeps, and bells. The Joint Commission
designated a patient safety goal recognizing alarm fatigue as of January 2014, and...

Many factors build that significance. In the article, Monitor Alarm Fatigue: An
Integrative Review , the author describes five themes from research gathered:3
(Cvach, M.) 1.Excessive alarms and effects on staff 2.Nurse s response to alarms
3.Alarm sounds and audibility 4.Technology to reduce false alarms 5.Alarm
notification systems A brief summary of this article follows. The sheer number of
alarms can be overwhelming. The majority of these alarms are not valid or
significant and can be termed as nuisance alarms. These can disrupt patient care and
decrease caregiver trust. The continued exposure to these types of alarms makes for
caregivers that may become desensitized. This desensitization could be potentially
harmful for the patient if an alarm is not taken seriously or alarm parameters are
changed outside of set boundaries. Caregiver response to alarms can be affected in
various ways. Trust in the alarm system will encourage an appropriate response.
Perfecting different alarm sounds to enable the caregiver to hear it amidst all of the
other noise is ongoing. Alarms that are more significant may have a different tone or
rhythm that assists the caregiver in differentiating those that are more urgent or
higher priority. Adding short delays can significantly decrease the number of ignored
or ineffective alarms. Central monitoring or a designated staff member to watch
monitors has been implemented in many different settings. There aren t many

The Benefits of Advances in Communication for the Visual or Hearing Impaired
Language is a means of communication that people use to interact with others in
society. Generally, language comprises vocal sounds to which meanings have been
assigned by cultural convention and often supplemented by various gestures.
(Sharma, 30) For any normal person, language is no longer viewed as a tool to
acquire: language is placed as a standard and basic skill, almost being considered
given at birth. Such an idea about language is reasonable when taking into account
how the development of speech and language is acquired in early childhood. But as a
rule, such a standard and basic process of language development is only relevant to

Then, we consider difficulties that the blind and the deaf face in their communication
and interaction with others. Finally, after identifying the difficulties, we then focus
on different technological innovations and improvements that concentrate to ease
such difficulties for the blind and the deaf, thus providing them wider access and use
of language especially in their everyday life.
First, let s consider the difference for people with visual and hearing impairments to
acquire the use of language in comparison to the standard and basic language
development process. From age 0 month to 6 months, babies typically learn most
basic communicating language skills such as crying and babbling to express
different feelings they experiences. Also, they start to recognize and look for
familiar voices and sounds. (Oesterriech) The development of typical language
skills of children aging 0 to 6 months primarily depends on hearing. These language
skills are essentially responses to what children hear in their life. So it is
presumably correct to state that babies with hearing impairments suffer the most
and pulled back on developing language skills from this early on. A major
drawback for deaf babies occur in the first year, for too often babies hearing
impairment is not diagnosed until babies are 12 months old. Such unawareness,
sadly, occurs too often for ninety percent of deaf

The Victorian Era spanned over sixty years of British history, during which Queen
Victoria ruled the country. During this era, great improvements were made in the
area of transportation. These innovative changes produced larger and faster ways to

During the Victorian Era there were very few modes of transportation. The most

The Role Of The 1919 World Series In The Great Gatsby
The 1919 World Series is a critical part of the novel, The Great Gatsby,
understanding what happened in the series can help us to understand the fact that
sports play a large role in the novel. The main role that sports play in the novel is
that they seem to show the reader that sports are always corrupt. When Tom is
introduced to the reader, he is described as one of the most powerful men to play
football at New Haven. This gives the impression that sports are always rigged in
favor of the more athletically or physically gifted people. The word sport could
also be a pun because it could mean sports, or it could mean to wear or display.
Gatsby sports a whole persona that is completely different than James Gatz. When
Nick first meets Wolfsheim, Gatsby claims that he was the man who fixed the
World Series. This is a very large claim that Gatsby makes because if Wolfsheim
was the man who fixed the World Series, then we can draw direct comparisons to the
man who fixed the 1919 World Seriesin real life, Arnold Rothstein. Both Rothstein
and Wolfsheim were the boss of the New York City Jewish mob even though
Wolfsheim is fake. Even though he was not a real person in life it seems that the
reason why the 1919 World Series is included in the book is because Fitzgerald wants
us see that the character Wolfsheim is almost an exact representation of Rothstein.
Fitzgerald uses the scene where Nick meets Wolfsheim to introduce Gatsby to Tom.
The scene is like the meeting of two sports,

There are several tropical areas that are most commonly linked to academic
performance including student s role performance factors, school factors, family
factors, and peer factors. Students Role Performance (SRP) is how well an individual
fulfils the role of a student in an educational setting.
Sex ,race, school effort ,extra curricular activities ,deviance and disabilities are all
important influences on SRP and have been shown to affect test scores .School
environmental factors ,such as school size ,neighborhood, and relationship between
teachers and students also influence test scores (Johnson Elder ,2004).
One s own family background has also been found to influence a students test scores
.research has found out that socio economic status, parental involvement and family
size are particular important family factors (Majorbanks,1996)
Peer influences can also affect student performance. Peer pressure and peer
conformity can lead to an individual participating in risk taking behavior which have
been found to have negative ,indirect effect on the test scores (santor,2000) .Parental
educational level is known as a factor positively related to children s academic
achievement (Kirby Grissmer, 1994). The family is the main factor influencing the
lives and outcomes of students (Okantey, 2008). The educational level of
The s Confessions By Augustine Dismisses The Aeneid
In the first book of his Confessions, Augustine dismisses the Aeneid, describing it
merely as depicting the wanderings of some legendary fellow named Aeneas (Conf.

Augustine also rejects other culturally significant texts and the work of both himself
and others in his life. While he does admit there are positive lessons to learn from
each of these pursuits, Augustine argues the only texts or professions that matter are
those that bring an individual closer to God, specifically by mentioning Him and His
teachings. Throughout Confessions, Augustine, in retrospect, rejects many of the
texts he came across in his life. He first exhibits this when he describes how wrong it
was to have reacted emotionally to the Aeneid. He wept over Dido, who died pursuing
her ultimate end with a sword (Conf. 1.21), while at the same time he failed to
realize he was dying by [his] alienation from [God] (Conf. 1.20). Here Augustine
laments the fact he wept over Dido s death while at the same time worsened his
own condition by ignoring God and his own sinfulness. He is highly critical of
himself in the way he approached the Aeneid as a child, describing himself as having
abandoned [God] to pursue the lowest things of [God s] creation (Conf. 1.21).
Because the Aeneid leads Augustine further away from God it cannot have any
significance in one s life. The Aeneid is not the only text Augustine disregards in
Criticism Of Piecemeal Social Engineering
the state from the ground up. It is radical. Piecemeal social engineering, however,
does not have the same idealized society as the end point, or at least, sees it as
something in the far distance. Piecemeal is far less risky, for several reasons that
Popper points out in his critique. Firstly, because piecemeal social engineering
looks at solving the most urgent evils of society, and not just trying to get rid of all
of them, with the goal of creating a heaven on earth, it is a method that can be
applied to at any moment (Popper 148). Small changes that improve happiness is
much easier to do than trying to fully eliminate suffering. An example of this type of
improvement would be call centers for parents with sick children. This would allow
the parents to call and get support from a registered nurse or doctor, without having
to wait in long lines at the hospital, or adding to those long lines. Piecemeal is about
solving issues that are occurring right now, and by doing that, is bettering society.
This also makes this method faster that utopian, which takes generations for the
blueprint to be seen though, instead of smaller aspects being fixed right away. There
are many other issues that are connected to the long timeframe of utopian social
engineering takes. Popper points out that making a heaven on earth is not something
that can be done in one or more generations. The leader who starts the plan, will not
be the same one there when the state finally reaches the final
Analysis Of Pretty Good For A Girl
Mekenzie Schaefer
Lit II P.2
Pretty Good for a Girl: an Athletes Story The book Pretty Good for a Girl is a
biography on a cross country star and her rise to the top, but also her spiral
downward with her personal battle to win. Leslie Heywood was a long distance
runner with no weakness or fear. Heywood takes us through her early years filled
with eating disorders, sexual abuse, and an unhappy home life. It wasn t a drive to
win, but a drive to be accepted as one of the guys.
A big part of Heywood s story is how she wanted to be known as one of the guys. She
was trying to be the opposite from how her mother was, an abused woman in a
loveless marriage. She assumed that every girl would be like her mother. All women
are idiots, except for maybe Stevie Nicks. I know my mother is. She stays with my
father when I know we should leave, moaning and crying through more than just one
bruised face about love (Leslie Heywood, 76). Her escape was running with the guys
as if she was one. To her the only way to be a good runner was to run like a guy.
Delicate. Effeminate. Weak. No way. I ll be a monster any day. (Leslie Heywood,
6) Heywood came of age when it was a constant battle for a girl to be taken
seriously as an athlete. She was excellent at track and cross country always priding
herself on running with the boys. She was regularly featured in local newspapers for
constantly beating records even her own. Heywood never practiced with the girls
cross country team because

  • 2. A Brief Note On The Italian Shoe Industry Essay 2.Demand conditions If the local market for a product is larger and more demanding at home than in foreign markets, local firms potentially put more emphasis on improvements than foreign companies. This will potentially increase the global competitiveness of local exporting companies. A more demanding home market can thus be seen as a driver of growth, innovation and quality improvements. 3.Related and Supporting Industries When local supporting industries and suppliers are competitive, home country companies will potentially get more cost efficient and receive more innovative parts and products. This will potentially lead to greater competitiveness for national firms. For instance, the Italian shoe industry benefits from a highly competent pool of related businesses and industries, which has strengthened the competitiveness of the Italian shoe industry world wide. 4.Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry The structure and managementsystems of firms in different countries can potentially affect competitiveness. By using Porter s diamond, business leaders may analyze which competitive factors may reside in their company s home country, and which of these factors may be exploited to gain global competitive advantages. Business leaders can also use the Porter s diamond model during a phase of internationalization, in which leaders may use the model to analyze whether or not the home market factors support the process of internationalization, and whether or not the
  • 3. The Positive Effects Of Retainment There have been many studies performed in recent years over the effects of retainment. The reasoning behind why a student is being retained can be a big deciding factor on whether it will end with success or not. When a child is behind their peers because of age or numerous absences, retainment is an option for them. At an older level, kids have a higher rate of success than those who have been retained (Davis School District, 2011). When repeating a grade, they can have success the next year, and can gain more confidence. However, retainment works best for students when at a young, lower elementary age. Research has shown that retaining a student can often point them in a negative direction. Students can experience bad impacts in all areas

At first I will provide a short biographical note on Malthus and I will also mention his main achievements. Then, a summary of Malthus main ideas of the first two chapters of mentioned work follows. Afterward, the essay concludes with a personal note. 2.A short biography Thomas Robert Malthus was born in 1766 (course textbook, n. d.) in Surrey, England, as the sixth son of a wealthy intellectual family and he died in 1834 (Weikard, n. d.). He was mainly concerned with population growth and poverty in the English society of his time. It was an answer to the precarious human situation back then. Malthus ... In this aspect, human beings are not any different from plants or animals, but in contrast to them they do not only act out of instinct. Additionally, they use their reasoning to determine whether they will be able to care sufficiently for their children (Malthus, p. 2). Malthus states that there are certain checks on population and points out that there is no society without any check applied. An unchecked population increases in a geometrical ratio, what means that it doubles itself every twenty five years. Instead, the available food does not increase geometrically, but gradually diminishes, because of the limited amount of fertile land. In contrast to the population, the agricultural production, under favourable circumstances, is able to only increase in an arithmetical ratio (Malthus, p. 6). A gap between population growth and the amount of food available rises. As a result, to further increase the food supply, it is necessary to improve the quality of the soil (Malthus, p. 4). Malthus points out that there is still land which is not cultivated, even in Europe, and that especially in this region it is possible to enhance the soil quality due to the progress of the industrialization, but it will be gradually diminishing (Malthus, p.

PART B: DEVELOPMENT Chapter I: Theoretical Background 1. Newspaper headlines 1.1. What is newspaper headline? Conventionally, it is believed that newspapers have more readers than any other kind of written text. According to Van Dijk (1986), for most citizens, news is perhaps the type of written discourse with which they are confronted most frequently (p. 156). In the newspaper it is the headline that has the highest readership. It summarizes the content of a story, and entices an audience into reading the article. According to Ungerer (2000), a headline describes the essence of a complicated news story in a few words. It informs quickly and accurately and arouses the reader s curiosity (p. 48). Newspaper headlines are particularly important for the way readers comprehend a news text, they are markers that monitor attention, perception and the reading process (Van Dijk, 1988). According to Danuta R. (1998), headline is a unique type of text. It has a range of functions that specifically dictate its shape, content, and structure and it operates within a range of restrictions that limited the freedom of the writer. In other words, headline should

People have an inherent tendency to drift towards ethnocentrism if they do not keep an open mind about the legitimacy of foreign cultural ideas. Enculturalization occurs from the very beginning of one s life. When one grows up in a culture that praises traits that are deemed as beneficial and discourages behaviors that are seen as harmful, one tends to develop similar beliefs on these traits and behaviors. Different cultures encourage different outlooks on society. This is the result of the environment a culture exists in. In many tribal societies, one of the primary influences on culture is the physical environment. However, in technologically advanced societies that worry less about satisfying needs and more about fulfilling desires, social aspects are perhaps more significant. For example, note the difference between American and Japanese culture. American culture promotes individualism and free speech. Many Americans tote the Constitution and the Bill of Rights

These pretty colours and lights are the result of a chemical reaction occurring, that ignites the firework and turns into a colourful flame. This phenomenon can be tested inside a laboratory using similar circumstances to that of a firework in the air. The test involves using chemicals, similar to what is seen in fireworks and burning those chemicals under a blue flame, which burns at 1500C. This energy is released as light energy, and as the amount of energy released varies from other metal ions, it leads to the characteristic colours given by each metal ion. Metal salts are used to the produce the colour seen; a fuel is needed to allow the ion to burn; a chemical which provides oxygen for the combustion of the fuel; and a chlorine/ binding chemical to help strengthen; and hold the mixture together. For example, if Sodium is placed into a flame, the sodium ions, collect all the energy given from the flame, and then is exerted out when the ions start to die. Due to the interconnection of gender with other forms of exclusion in the society, the role and status of women cannot be considered homogenous. There is a great deal of diversity in the status of women across regions, classes, the rural/urban divide caused by the lack of socio economic development and the impact of feudal, tribal, and capitalist social formations in women s lives. Pakistan is a society which is predominantly patriarchal. Men and women have been forced to live into two separate worlds. For a woman, the home is supposed to be the legitimate ideological and physical space for her. Men on the other hand are expected to dominate outside the house. This false ideological demarcation between public and private, inside and outside world has been maintained with the notion of honor and the use of purdah in Pakistan. The honor of the family is usually linked with the women s sexual behavior, meaning that their sexuality is considered a potential threat. Therefore, for reason such as these, women mobility is strictly restricted and controlled through the use of purdah , gender segregation, and the use of violence against them. In the social context, women in Pakistan lack social status and value because of negation of their roles as providers and producers in the society. In a country like Pakistan, there is

The cutoff date for making the elite team is also January 1st; meaning that all the hockey players born close to the cutoff date would be enrolled for the next year and therefore, have a whole year on people born in December of that same year. Edith Wharton uses Mattie to express isolation and being lonely. She comes to the country with ribbons in her hair and more joy in herself. She wanted to free Ethan from the terrible society he lived in. Life in Starkfield is bleak and boring. No one comes outside or enjoys themselves. This is mainly why Ethan wants to escape the barren and poor neighborhood. Ethan is also isolated as well. He opposes society mainly because he cannot be with the one he loves and he doesn t want to ruin his marriage to Zeena as well. When Zeena falls ill, she goes to the doctor for a couple of days and returns only to find her expensive china now ruined. Angry, she tells Ethan that she needs more hired help and plans to send Mattie away. Upset, Ethan did not know what to do . He decided to write a letter to Zeena telling her to run the farm and be by herself. However, he

Black White Blues Black, Brown and White Blues Big Bill Broonzys Big Bill Broonzys has been singing protest sharpened songs since the 1920 s from country blues and evolving to urban style blues, but he is ultimately known for his traditional folk blues. As a well known artist that appealed to the black working class, Big Bill became a leader and key figure in the development of blues music. Given that Big Bill had a long history in various styles of blues and being an African American born in the South that held jobs such as a sharecropper, I believe that Big Bill had a deep passion when singing such songs as Black, Brown and White Blues . An example that we discussed in class and in the reading is that a group of 16 men refused to move to the back of the bus when the bus passed into a state that required they move, even though the law did not. This is a form of direct action because it forced the government to enforce the laws in place and also promoted the civil rights movement. The help of media depicting the cruel manner of police forces against protestors also helped force the government to take action to clean up America s image in order to appeal to countries in the east under the threat of communist Soviet Union. In my eyes we owe a lot to the Soviet Union because the threat of them turning more countries communist made or forced the United States into cleaning up the problems they had ignored for so

INTP 371 Short Essay Sally Togher | 15 April 2017 | Question 2 Evaluate and critique the different arguments for the decline in warfare since 1990. In the last decade, discussion of the decline of war has dramatically escalated. This essay evaluates and critiques three major arguments for the decline in warfare since 1990, examining the human nature approach of Steven Pinker, the shorter term factors proposed by John Mueller and the alternative New Wars theory championed by Mary Kaldor. In combination, these approaches provide a general summary of the major strains of declinist literature and demonstrate the challenges of assessing the changing political violence and armed conflict after the Cold War. In The Better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John Mueller makes a claim even bolder than a decline in war, arguing that war has ceased, or nearly ceased, to exist. He argues that the general decline in inter state war lies in the changing attitudes towards war. Mueller contends that up until the early 20th century, war was seen in a positive light, but European attitudes changed profoundly after WWI, and that shift of opinion was dramatically reinforced by WWII. Mueller explains the particular fall in civil wars in the 1990s as a result of improvements in governance and policing in developing countries. Thus these factors in combination explain the recent decline in all wars. Mueller rejects other alternative arguments for the decline of war, including economic interdependence and institutional incentives, on the basis of causality and questionable impact. Critics of his theories point out that the traditional war conception they are based on excludes any non state warfare with under 1000 deaths, and thus explanations of the recent decline do not account for major instances of political violence such as the Rwandan Genocide. However, Mueller refutes these critiques with the view that such political violence is merely opportunistic thugs who are the residual combatants . Thus, Mueller s claim that war has ceased to exist is qualified, particularly in light of political changes after the cold war. Comparatively, Mary Kaldor attempts to address the methodological issues of

The unyielding quest for boundless knowledge has been my motivating and driving force throughout my career pursuit. It s the same quest that prompted me for higher studies. The dedication to finding solutions and a thirst for creating new tools to benefit humanity has molded me into a seeker of advanced knowledge. I have always felt a strong need for achievement, which has been the motivating force behind whatever I have achieved in my academic career. My consistently outstanding academic record ever since my school years has resulted in numerous prizes and certificates of merit. My strengths have been my quantitative and analytical abilities which instilled in me a special interest for mathematics and physics. I had always been intrigued by science and used to spend a lot of time learning and knowing it. It is possible if the first world countries can afford to lose money and resources to help other countries. If the first world countries do not cancel the debt then the third world countries debt and loans is going to increase. It going to cause the value of the money currencies to drop and the cost of the debt is going to rise. The debt is also causing the third worldcountries to delay from increasing their own economic and other benefits. In other word it is preventing the third world countries from developing into a rich and resourceful country just like the first world countries. This causes the third world countries to borrow money from the first world countries in order to resolve the debt and need to borrow money to privatize the communal resource. The debt of the third world countries need to be forgiven because of the increase in debt, economic and borrowing money. The third world countries debt is only going to increase if the first world countries do not cancel the debt. The main reason that the debt is going to increase is that the third world countries had made loans with the first world countries and the loans continue to increase. According to Vanessa Baird, Most loans to the third world have to be repaid in hard currencies; and hard currencies are stable currencies: that means their value does not change much. However, these patients are the ones that need high tech equipment to assist with their care. This equipment comes with many different audible indicators meant to assist the bedside clinician in keeping these patients safe. These sounds contribute to the noise level in the environment meant to heal. Amidst the worry about patient s exposure to what many times is too loud noise, health care providers, too, are exposed to the constant cacophony of bings, beeps, and bells. The sheer number of alarms can be overwhelming. The majority of these alarms are not valid or significant and can be termed as nuisance alarms. These can disrupt patient care and decrease caregiver trust. The continued exposure to these types of alarms makes for caregivers that may become desensitized. This desensitization could be potentially harmful for the patient if an alarm is not taken seriously or alarm parameters are changed outside of set boundaries. Caregiver response to alarms can be affected in various ways. Trust in the alarm system will encourage an appropriate response. Alarms that are more significant may have a different tone or rhythm that assists the caregiver in differentiating those that are more urgent or higher priority. Adding short delays can significantly decrease the number of ignored or ineffective alarms. Generally, language comprises vocal sounds to which meanings have been assigned by cultural convention and often supplemented by various gestures. (Sharma, 30) For any normal person, language is no longer viewed as a tool to acquire: language is placed as a standard and basic skill, almost being considered given at birth. Finally, after identifying the difficulties, we then focus on different technological innovations and improvements that concentrate to ease such difficulties for the blind and the deaf, thus providing them wider access and use of language especially in their everyday life. First, let s consider the difference for people with visual and hearing impairments to acquire the use of language in comparison to the standard and basic language development process. From age 0 month to 6 months, babies typically learn most basic communicating language skills such as crying and babbling to express different feelings they experiences. Also, they start to recognize and look for familiar voices and sounds. (Oesterriech) The development of typical language skills of children aging 0 to 6 months primarily depends on hearing. These language skills are essentially responses to what children hear in their life. So it is presumably correct to state that babies with hearing impairments suffer the most and pulled back on developing language skills from this early on. A major drawback for deaf babies occur in the first year, for too often babies hearing impairment is not diagnosed until babies are 12 months old. Such unawareness, sadly, occurs too often for ninety percent of deaf

The Role Of The 1919 World Series In The Great Gatsby The 1919 World Series is a critical part of the novel, The Great Gatsby, understanding what happened in the series can help us to understand the fact that sports play a large role in the novel. The main role that sports play in the novel is that they seem to show the reader that sports are always corrupt. When Tom is introduced to the reader, he is described as one of the most powerful men to play football at New Haven. This gives the impression that sports are always rigged in favor of the more athletically or physically gifted people. The word sport could also be a pun because it could mean sports, or it could mean to wear or display. Gatsby sports a whole persona that is completely different than James Gatz. When Nick first meets Wolfsheim, Gatsby claims that he was the man who fixed the World Series. This is a very large claim that Gatsby makes because if Wolfsheim was the man who fixed the World Series, then we can draw direct comparisons to the man who fixed the 1919 World Seriesin real life, Arnold Rothstein. Both Rothstein and Wolfsheim were the boss of the New York City Jewish mob even though Wolfsheim is fake. Even though he was not a real person in life it seems that the reason why the 1919 World Series is included in the book is because Fitzgerald wants us see that the character Wolfsheim is almost an exact representation of Rothstein. Fitzgerald uses the scene where Nick meets Wolfsheim to introduce Gatsby to Tom. The scene is like the meeting of two sports,

The s Confessions By Augustine Dismisses The Aeneid In the first book of his Confessions, Augustine dismisses the Aeneid, describing it merely as depicting the wanderings of some legendary fellow named Aeneas (Conf. 1.20). However, this is not the only thing that he dismisses throughout the text. Augustine also rejects other culturally significant texts and the work of both himself and others in his life. While he does admit there are positive lessons to learn from each of these pursuits, Augustine argues the only texts or professions that matter are those that bring an individual closer to God, specifically by mentioning Him and His teachings. Throughout Confessions, Augustine, in retrospect, rejects many of the texts he came across in his life. He first exhibits this when he describes how wrong it was to have reacted emotionally to the Aeneid. He wept over Dido, who died pursuing her ultimate end with a sword (Conf. 1.21), while at the same time he failed to realize he was dying by [his] alienation from [God] (Conf. 1.20). Here Augustine laments the fact he wept over Dido s death while at the same time worsened his own condition by ignoring God and his own sinfulness. He is highly critical of himself in the way he approached the Aeneid as a child, describing himself as having abandoned [God] to pursue the lowest things of [God s] creation (Conf. 1.21). Because the Aeneid leads Augustine further away from God it cannot have any significance in one s life. The Aeneid is not the only text Augustine disregards in
  • 41. Criticism Of Piecemeal Social Engineering the state from the ground up. It is radical. Piecemeal social engineering, however, does not have the same idealized society as the end point, or at least, sees it as something in the far distance. Piecemeal is far less risky, for several reasons that Popper points out in his critique. Firstly, because piecemeal social engineering looks at solving the most urgent evils of society, and not just trying to get rid of all of them, with the goal of creating a heaven on earth, it is a method that can be applied to at any moment (Popper 148). Small changes that improve happiness is much easier to do than trying to fully eliminate suffering. An example of this type of improvement would be call centers for parents with sick children. This would allow the parents to call and get support from a registered nurse or doctor, without having to wait in long lines at the hospital, or adding to those long lines. Piecemeal is about solving issues that are occurring right now, and by doing that, is bettering society. This also makes this method faster that utopian, which takes generations for the blueprint to be seen though, instead of smaller aspects being fixed right away. There are many other issues that are connected to the long timeframe of utopian social engineering takes. Popper points out that making a heaven on earth is not something that can be done in one or more generations. The leader who starts the plan, will not be the same one there when the state finally reaches the final

Analysis Of Pretty Good For A Girl Mekenzie Schaefer Lit II P.2 Pretty Good for a Girl: an Athletes Story The book Pretty Good for a Girl is a biography on a cross country star and her rise to the top, but also her spiral downward with her personal battle to win. Leslie Heywood was a long distance runner with no weakness or fear. Heywood takes us through her early years filled with eating disorders, sexual abuse, and an unhappy home life. It wasn t a drive to win, but a drive to be accepted as one of the guys. A big part of Heywood s story is how she wanted to be known as one of the guys. She was trying to be the opposite from how her mother was, an abused woman in a loveless marriage. She assumed that every girl would be like her mother. All women are idiots, except for maybe Stevie Nicks. I know my mother is. She stays with my father when I know we should leave, moaning and crying through more than just one bruised face about love (Leslie Heywood, 76). Her escape was running with the guys as if she was one. To her the only way to be a good runner was to run like a guy. Delicate. Effeminate. Weak. No way. I ll be a monster any day. (Leslie Heywood, 6) Heywood came of age when it was a constant battle for a girl to be taken seriously as an athlete. She was excellent at track and cross country always priding herself on running with the boys. She was regularly featured in local newspapers for constantly beating records even her own. Heywood never practiced with the girls cross country team because
