Lysosomes are spherical organelles that contain acidic digestive enzymes. They were discovered in 1955 and play important roles in intracellular digestion, extracellular digestion through secretion of enzymes, hormone processing and secretion, and fertilization. Lysosomes contain various hydrolases like nucleases, phosphatases, lipases, proteases and glycosidases that break down nutrients, waste products, and foreign material. They are formed from the Golgi complex and endoplasmic reticulum and are bounded by a single membrane that contains the digestive enzymes within the lysosome.
