National Information Standards Organization (NISO)

Technological changes are accelerating social changes in the scholarly publishing landscape. There has been significant consolidation among publishers through horizontal and vertical integration. Relationships between authors, readers, publishers, and librarians have shifted with the rise of content aggregators and library vendors that now provide aggregated content and library management systems. Major companies like Thomson Reuters and Elsevier have expanded into research administration services. Startups are also emerging to create new models for scholarly communication through open solutions. The landscape continues to transform dramatically and it is unclear what relationships and models may emerge by 2030.

The Keepers Registry is an international registry of e-serial content preserved by archiving institutions and organizations. Recently, it has moved its home to the ISSN International Centre. This move highlights both the challenges of maintaining common services and the benefits of allying them with complementary services. The Keepers Registry had previously been hosted by Edina at the University of Edinburgh and funded by JISC. Once JISC decided to refocus and allocate its money elsewhere, there was little time to find and fund a new home for the Keepers Registry. The scramble over the past six months illustrates the need to ensure hosting and funding not merely for content, but for the services we all use to help us do our work in building collections and managing the content within them. Luckily, the ISSN International Centre was not merely interested in serving as the home for the Keepers Registry, but showed how the Keepers Registry is a natural complement to the other services provided by the ISSN IC. We shall show how the Keepers Registry and some of the other services offered by the ISSN IC can be used to great benefit by libraries, publishers and all those invested in scholarly communication. It will provide a look into what digital preservation means in a practical sense and what that means in terms of a commitment by individual institutions and through collective action. Organization identifiers are a key part of the scholarly communications infrastructure. At the beginning of 2017 Crossref, DataCite and ORCID formed a working group to establish principles and specifications for an open, independent, non-profit identifier registry focused on the disambiguation of researcher affiliations. The group published a set of recommendations and a Request for Information (RFI) to solicit comment and interest from the broader scholarly community in developing the registry. This session will give an overview of the work and an update on current progress.

Many academic libraries are moving into the publishing landscape, and an increasing number of university presses are now part of their university library infrastructure. The business of libraries and publishers are now intertwined and overlapping. Libraries have been proponents of open access, whereas many scholarly publishers have been wary about, if not hesitant to implement, open models. How are priorities such as funding and sustainability achieved? The Mason Publishing Group, an initiative within the George Mason University Library, provides support and resources to the George Mason University community for creating, curating, and disseminating scholarly, creative, and educational works. Programs and services of the Mason Publishing Group include the George Mason University Press, scholarly communication and copyright, University dissertation and thesis services, the Mason institutional repository (MARS), electronic journal hosting and publishing, and data publication. Planned services include publication of e-books and conference proceedings. This session provides an overview of the current library publishing landscape and efforts at Mason to create and sustain this initiative. Presented by Dr Karen Lucas on 9th July 2014 http://www.its.leeds.ac.uk/people/k.lucas Abstract: Until now, human and social factors have not been very dominant aspects of transportation research. The general trend has been a biased towards more technical and engineering studies and transport economics. Nevertheless, there has been continuous social science research on the fringes of transport studies. For example behavioural psychology has been used in traffic safety risk management and human geography has been concerned with the interface between space, time, and mobility. There has also been a significant academic discourse around transport equity and the mobility and accessibility needs of transport disadvantaged groups, which has gathered momentum in recent years. More lately, sociologists and cultural geographers have begun to explore the embodied meanings and the cultural significance of different transport modes within our everyday social practices. A number of scholars within the Institute of Transport Studies at Leeds have already forged important cross-disciplinary partnerships with other disciplines within and outside the University. In this lecture, I will explore the potential to further strengthen and exploit these new directions within transport research. I will briefly reflect on the opportunities for achieving this through mechanisms such as within the University’ core research themes, the new Social Science Strategy, other research University-wide supported initiatives and more informal collaborations. But more importantly I will be asking whether it is possible to use these inter-disciplinary collaborations to radicalise our research enquiries so that we are able to offer transformational solutions to overcome the currently environmentally unsustainable and socially unjust allocation of mobility resources within and between nations.

Strategic planning and delivery of services at the University of Auckland's Libraries and Learning Services (L&LS) is underpinned by institutional collaboration and consultation. L&LS continues to strengthen its specialist research support services with an enhanced focus on strategic partnerships. L&LS is the institutional owner of Research Outputs (Symplectic Elements), the system used by University of Auckland (UoA) researchers to record and manage their research publications and professional activities. Research Outputs is also a key data source for services that support UoA researchers increase their visibility, track and measure their research impact, and generate data for performance reviews. A reference group of senior academic and professional staff, chaired by the University Librarian, is a forum for strategic decision making on best practice use and development of Research Outputs. The UoA external facing university directory and academic profiles use a publication feed from Research Outputs and is one example of L&LS collaborating on an enterprise wide project to increase the visibility of researchers. L&LS actively contribute to several working groups including an initiative to promote ways to enhance academic reputation and profile, and increase citations. One outcome was a marked increase in deposits to the UoA research repository. A research impact publication service was launched by L&LS in 2014. The multi-faceted BiblioInformatics Service, developed with input from strategic partners and stakeholders, offers researchers consultations with librarians on how to track and maximise the impact of their research outputs and is supported by online guides. A self-service platform, drawing on Research Outputs as a data source, provides information such as h-index and top cited publications. To support strategic decision making the service also delivers benchmarking and collaboration reports to Senior Management on research and citation performance.

Three years since outset of the COVID pandemic and the establishment UN Publishers Compact, this is discussion-led presentation will look at how four UK Universities Presses have adopted a consultative and collaborative approach on projects to support their institutional missions, engage with the wider scholarly community while building on a commitment to make a meaningful difference to society. This panel discussion will combine the perspectives of four UK based university presses, all with distinct identities and varied publishing programs drawn from humanities, arts and social sciences, yet with a shared recognition and value of the importance to collaborate and co-operate on a shared vision to support accessibility and inclusivity within the wider scholarly community and maintain a rich bibliodiversity.
