The limbic system is a set of brain structures involved in emotion, behavior, motivation, and memory. It includes the hippocampus, amygdala, septum, cingulate gyrus, and parts of the hypothalamus and thalamus. The limbic system regulates functions like aggression, fear response, appetite, sleep, dreams, social cognition, and memory formation and storage. Damage to limbic structures can impact conditions like temporal lobe epilepsy, limbic encephalitis, and Alzheimer's disease.
