What did this project accomplish?
■ I used events in the three time periods to confront common misconceptions about
NativeAmericans
Misconception:
■ During early interactions with Europeans, Native Americans had nothing to gain
Roanoke Interactions with Lane’s Colony
■ Wingina and the Roanoke tried to establish a reciprocal relationship with Lane
Things I learned
■ NativeAmericans interacted with Europeans to foster trade alliance and obtain power.
■ NativeAmericans were not passive in their interactions with Europeans, and actually
held the upper hand (demonstrated by knowledge of the land and food supply)
Misconception:
■ Before this class, I thought that NativeAmericans were a race of people

Things I learned
■ Membership and enrollment in a tribe is what makes people apart of tribal nations

■ In 1977 the IITC gained consultative status to a nongovernmental organization
■ NativeActivism accelerated in the 1960s and 1970s to reassert sovereignty
Things I learned
■ Sovereignty is Native peoples’ right to govern their own affairs, and is practiced
regardless of recognition by the federal government
