This photo essay examines the emergence of segregation following Reconstruction. While African Americans fought for equality through political participation, their efforts unintentionally led to greater segregation. The essay argues that it was necessary for black Americans to work within the existing white political system to gain control and achieve equality through gaining suffrage and participating in government. A variety of photos depict African Americans peacefully convening political discussions, fighting for the Union in the Civil War, and casting their first votes, showing their pursuit of equal rights and integration.
