Light Interactions

WWMS
7th Grade Science
Law of Reflection
• The angle of incident
equals the angle of
reflection
Regular Reflection
• When light is reflected
of off a smooth
surface.
• Your eyes will see a
reflection on the
surface.
Diffused Reflection
• The reflection of light
from an uneven
surface.
• Your eyes will not see
a reflection on the
surface
Refraction
• The bending of light
as it goes through a
different medium and
changes speeds.
Diffraction
• The bending of light
around barriers
• The colors on the
spider web are due to
the diffraction of light.
Light Interference
• The iridescence of the
Peacock’s feathers is
caused by light
interference from
many layers of
reflected light.
3-Types of light interactions with
matter
•

As light passes
through this window
it can be:
1. Absorbed- soaked up
2. Transmitted- pass
through
3. Reflected- bounce off
3 Types of Matter
1. Transparent- light is
transmitted in strait
lines
2. Translucent- light is
transmitted in
scattered patterns
3. Opaque- all the light
is absorbed.
Color Addition
•

The 3 primary colors
of light are:
1. Red
2. Green
3. Blue

When combined they
form white.
Color Subtraction
•

The primary pigment
colors are:
1. Magenta
2. Cyan
3. Yellow

•
•

They can combine to
produce any other
color.
When mixed they
create black
