This document compares different lighting technologies for lighting towers. Metal halide lighting is becoming outdated due to high maintenance costs from frequent bulb changes and fuel consumption. LEDs have improved but produce intense blue glare and have lower color rendering. CDM (cold cathode discharge metal) provides the best quality light with high color rendering and efficiency, directly replacing 1000W metal halide with only 150W while reducing glare. CDM produces "mesopic light" that stimulates both rod and cone cells in the eye for better visibility compared to the photopic light of other technologies. It has additional advantages including longer life, lower costs, and reducing health and safety risks from glare, flicker, and light pollution.
