The case for white light

 Horrible colour appearance & no colour rendering
        Poor lumen maintenance ( SOX )
 High control gear losses “
        Useless photometrically “
 Outdated by white light developments
 Also, poor visual performance under this light colour

Improvements in white light
    technology:

 Efficacy - more Lumens for less Watts
     Better Lumen maintenance
     Longer life
     Electronic control gear
     More stable white colour

3
Three Key Points...

1. Quality not Quantity

2. Spectral Distribution critical to Vision

3. Optical system efficiency with LEDs
   far higher than with HID
And actually a fourth point:
(not strictly to do with white light)

4. LEDs are beautifully controllable

      - both optically
      - and with dimming
Mesopic Vision
     Sometimes known as „Twilight Vision‟,
occurs in a narrow illuminance band
corresponding to Eh = 5–30 Lux.
     Coincides closely with BS5489 / EN13201
    urban/residential.
 Vision enhanced under blue-rich white light
with good colour-rendering light sources (ie.
    better than CRI 60)
4
SON vs Metal Halide
                                      ILLUMINANCE 60% LESS

600 W SON 365 Watt, 39% energy reduction
Facial Recognition

 White light significantly better for facial
    recognition than yellow Sodium light

 About 60% less white light needed

Facial recognition

Source: Raynham & Saksvikronning UCL London
Conclusions:
1. White light saves energy,
   lower lamp powercan be used.
2. Better facial recognition (therefore security)
with white light & requires 60% less
3. Mesopic conditions (5 – 30 Lux):
High (> 60%) CRI lamps give optimum
   vision for lowest energy.

“ Fit & Forget” 10 yrs no-servicing solutions (CFL& LEDs)

 Smaller luminaires
 Super-efficient reflectors
 Self – cleaning optics
 Better luminaire sealing – protect electronics & LEDs
 Minimum upward light (future legislation)
 Simple electronic lighting control systems (energy saving)
 More reliable electronics(currently a weak link)
 Recyclable luminaires – return to factory for LED change
after 10yrs, with 40-year luminaire life
White road lighting
                      VISUAL COMFORT:
                      Closer to daylight
                      Better colour discrimination

                      SAFETY & SECURITY:
                      Better facial recognition

                      SAFER DRIVING:
                      Improved peripheral vision

Dynamic Power Management
(DPM)
• Ambient lighting level “simmers“ at low level (i.e.10-20%)
• Sensors trigger higher levels when required
• LEDs perfect for this application
• Energy savings up to 85% compared w static operation
• Less thermal stress on system gives even longer LED life
• Application now moving to radar sensors for road lighting
• New sensor technology will widen applications

Editor's Notes

  • #17 Electronic Light Sources - solid stateBetter at cool colours (4000 – 6000K) good for Mesopic vision Emit less heat but very temperature – sensitiveFar superior optical performance – integral optics etcSmoothly and instantaneously dimmable - ideal for DPM applicationsDimming range (0 – 100%) far better than HIDIncredibly long life ( up to 80,000 hrs to L85)Optimum flux utilisation offers big energy savingsHuge maintenance benefits leads to lowest TCO despite higher capex
  • #21 GE’s solutions have been designed to integrate and harmonise with the aesthetics of a modern office environment and provide soft, even illumination of all surfaces.Short discussion surrounding each bullet point… 5 mins on this slide only and then invite to move through the stand
