Portable Lighting Equipment
A redhead light is compact and lightweight, it can
be used for multiple purposes including lighting a
location for filming, and it can also be used as a
flood light to light a large area.
They are usually 800w and usually comes with a
lamp head, “barn doors” (which are used to close
over the light or to direct it where needed) and a
power cable (they are not battery operated). You
can get these from LightInTheBox for £37.71
A blonde light is practically a bigger version of a redhead light
it used to light a larger area than a redhead light and the
power rating is usually 1000 to 2000w. The term blonde is
often used loosely as there is not an actual definition for it.
You can get these from ianirouk for £300-£400
Practical lighting is where the light source is already in the
scene for example if the set was a house there would be
ceiling lights or maybe wall lights. These are great way of
lighting a set without having to work around the issue of
them being in the shot. These will not usually cost money
because they are already in the set.
Reflector boards are used to fill in
shadows and reducing contrast in the scene. There are 5
types of reflector colours: Silver, Soft Gold, Black, White,
and Translucent White. Each 5 produce a slightly different
effect. These are usually used for photo-shoots and can
be bought from essentialphoto for £16.99
A scrim/diffuser is a big white sheet of
silk diffuser fabric and it is used for
shoots that are in bright areas. It soften
and diffuses light sources to create a
better, clearer image. These can be used
to reflect light at a set or location. You
can buy them for different prices for
different sizes. A 6ft by 6ft scrim/diffuser
can be bought from cvp for £127.75.
Studio Lighting
A spotlight is used to fill in a small area. It can be
used on a stage for putting the focus on one
person or can be used on a set for filling in a
small area that the other lights may have
missed. They are also great for lighting the front
of an actor with one spotlight and then the back with another to really
separate the actor from the background. You can buy these from tomtop for
£90.19.
Floodlights are used to light whole sets or large outside
areas when it is dark or if it is just a bit too dark to film.
They will light areas while keeping colours the same.
They can range anywhere from 1000w to around
25000w with prices ranging from £600 to around
£15000
A gobo is a shield that you put in front of a
spotlight so that instead of a beam it projects a
shape like a circle or square. This could be used
top light a certain object with a certain shape
without lighting other things behind it. You can buy
a gobo from electrosupplies for £179.95
Quality and Positioning
Soft light is light that creates shadows that have a gradual transition from light
to dark. This means that there are no hard shadow lines. For example if you
were standing in front of a soft light, your shadow would be lighter in near the
edge of the shadow and darker in the middle of your shadow.
Hard light is light that creates shadows that do not have a gradual transition
from light to dark. They are all one colour of shadow. For example if you were
standing in front of a hard light your shadow would be all one shade of black.
A key light is a light that is used to highlight the subject and make them seem
separate to the background adding a sense of 3 dimensions. A key light is
one of the 3 components used in standard 3 point lighting. In standard 3 point
lighting the key light is usually placed at a 30-60 degree angle relative to the
subject with the camera marking 0 degrees.
A fill light is used to reduce the contrast of a scene so the colours look as
close to what the human eye sees as possible. A fill light is another one of the
3 components needed for standard 3 point lighting. In standard 3 point lighting
a fill light is usually placed at a 300-330 degree angle relative to the subject,
with the camera marking 0 degrees.
A back light is used to illuminate the subject from the back giving a sense of
separation from the background. A back light is the final component of
standard 3 point lighting. In standard 3 point lighting the back light is usually
placed at 120-150 degrees relative to the subject with the camera marking 0
degrees.
Directional lighting is lighting that only shines in a given direction with little to
no light spilling out in other directions. This is used to light a subject without
lighting anything around it. This could be used to light an actor in a very dark
scene to make it look like he/she was in a void. You can buy a directional light
from lighting-direct for as little as £15.
5600k lighting is daylight balanced which means it creates light that is
produces the same colours as daylight. These are the most common used
lights on set because if the set is outside but overcast they may want to use a
few 5600k lights to bring it to daylight. 5600k lights can come in different
types: HMI (Hydrargyrum Medium-Arc Iodide), Fluorescent and LED.
3200k (tungsten) lighting is a strong red colour similar to candlelight but not
quite as red. It is used to create a very warm looking scene and is usually
used inside. It could however be used outside at night to create quite a
spooky looking scene. 3200k tungsten lights are usually now LEDs
