This document summarizes Shannon Taylor's mini project exploring how people document themselves online versus historically through photos. The summary analyzes how documentation has shifted from physical photo albums to social media posts of daily life. Literature from theorists like Lev Manovich and Damon Brown discuss forming identities through Instagram and whether documenting life online detracts from experience. Taylor's artifact mimics 1970s style photos using modern Facebook and Instagram images to show self-documentation has not fundamentally changed and raises questions about archiving identity online.

1940 — A MEMORABLE GROUP OF PLAYERS
Maine’s 1940 eleven was short on wins, but not in patriotism. Virtually all members were wearing their country’s uniforms within two years and, tragically,
at least six members (Roger Stearns, Al Edelstein, Fred Briggs, Ed Barrows, Don Holyoke, and Keith Grover) died in World War II combat. Stearns and
Barrows were able leaders . . . Stearns captained the 1940 team and Barrows in 1941. The 1940 season was the final year of Fred Brice’s 20-year coaching
reign in Orono. Two team members, Bill Irvine and Einar Olson, became presidents of universities in the UM System in later years. Front row, kneeling,
Mgrs. Francis Burger, left, and Dick Cranch, right. First row, l-r, Fred Briggs, Cliff Nickerson, Cy Brady, Al Edelstein, Capt. Roger Stearns, Ed Barrows,
Jim Harris, Charlie Arbor, George Grant, Charles Gardner, Herb Johnson, and Don Holyoke. Second row, l-r, Carl Goodchild, Frank Austin, Maurice
Geneva, Bill Irvine, Bob Dalrymple, Sam Dyer, Ray Gay, Einar Olsen, Tom Pollock, Dick Harlow, Jim Russell, Lowell Ward, and Trainer Stan Wallace.
Third row, l-r, Dana Dingley, Keith Grover, Bob Roy, Nat Crowley, Dick McKeen, Ed Robinson, Ken Wright, Parker Small, Jim Smith, Jacob Stahl,
Jacob Serota, and Bob McLeary.

1928 — ANOTHER GREAT SEASON
One of the golden eras in Maine football encompassed the seasons of 1926, 1927 and 1928 when Coach Fred Brice’s teams won 17 games, lost only three
and tied two. There were no polls in those years, but many sportswriters wrote that the Bears were the best in New England. Rosters of those seasons
included a number of Maine’s finest athletes of all time. George Coltart was an all-New England selection, scoring an amazing 143 points during the
three years while Pat Peakes booted 39 extra points. The 1928 team, shown here, posted a 4-1-2 record. Front row, l-r, Coach Fred Brice, Ted Palmer,
John Lynch, Edmund “Rip” Black, Capt. Jim Buzzell, George “Mike” Coltart, Warren Blockinger, Ken Young, and Lavon Zakarian. Second row, l-r,
Mgr. Virgil Lancaster, Lyman Abbott, Eugene “Red” Vail, Lou Airoldi, Bill Gowell, Hank Horne, Ken Noddin, Bill Daley, Harry Moyer, and Asst. Coach
Jack Quinn. Third row, l-r, Art Lufkin, Henry Plummer, Ralph Davis, Paul Hickson, Dick Bird, Sam Gray, Jack Moran, Hector Hebert, Bill Gowans,
George Anderson, and Asst. Mgr. Jim Ashworth. Back row, l-r, Brad Merrill, Dave Barker, Hubert Tracy, Asa Wasgatt, John Laplante, Jim Elliott, Asst. Mgr.
Henry Favor, Stan Painter, Sam Sezak, and Trainer Stan Wallace.

THE BEARS OF 1944
It didn’t seem likely that football could continue at Maine in 1944 with a small number of male students on campus due to World War II, but Faculty
Manager of Athletics Ted Curtis and Coach Bill Kenyon were able to put together a team consisting mostly of under-draft age freshmen. The team played
four games, home and home arrangements with UNH and Norwich. Each series produced a win and a loss. Front row, l-r, Dick Kallgren, Dick Gillespie,
Ken Reed, Dave Pierce, Harold Gilman, Leonard Plavin, Gene Long, Roy Moore, Al Miller, John Collins, and Harland Davis. Second row, l-r, Asst. Mgr.
Ernest Sokol, Harold Lambert, Gene Boutilier, John Skofield, Hugh Hastings, Bill Wiggin, Tom Murray, Len Korobkin, Ralph Thompson, Leroy Henderson,
Don Buckley, Charles Sawyer, Charles King, and Mgr. Edward Butler. Third row, l-r, Faculty Mgr. Ted Curtis, Sumner Gordon, John Mayo, John Goff,
John Day, Joe Bosse, Joe Lupsha, Ken Hodson, Irving Garber, Mal Kittridge, Howard Erlick, and Coach Bill Kenyon.
