Disadvantages Of Television
According to Anthony (1991) as reported by James (n.d), television is a telecommunication system
used worldwide for receiving and transmitting motion pictures with or without accompanying sound
over a distance. Emanuel Akapan (1998) as cited by James (n.d) asserts that television as a
telecommunication medium has added to the overall development in Nigeria and is still making a
lot of impact on the economic, cultural, social and educational growth of the nation. He adds that
television is the most effective modern tool of mass communication available to mankind. Onabajo
(2005), states television is an important communication medium whose major aim is to influence the
mission and behavior of people that receive its communicated symbols. It can be used to create
awareness on topical issues while...show more content...
According to Onabajo in James (n.d), television's effectiveness in aiding development derives from
the following characteristics:
a)Television can present things as they really are through sight and hearing
b)Events can be shown as they are happening;
c)It can address both the literate and the illiterate with equal success and effectiveness
d)It can speak to the individual intimately, but also lends itself
e)It has both intellectual and emotional appeal. The Nigerian culture has been enhanced through the
process of acculturation of European and American programs. Onabajo (2005) affirms in James (n.d)
that television must ensure that only the right virtues are transmitted to viewers. The presence of too
much western culture in telecasts should be checked as it could lead to cultural imperialism rather
than cultural transformation. Television needs to guide against telecasting unusual culture and social
activities to ensure the removal of barbaric entertainments (Onabajo 95).

Life Without Cell Phone
LIFE WITHOUT CELL PHONES Introduction We have become a society that is totally dependant
on communication devices to make our world go round. We have technology today that allows us to
keep in almost constant contact with one another. We communicate through cell phones that use a
network of specialized base stations called cell sites, but many people now are using cell and mobile
phones that use a satellite signal for their connection. The phone, TV, personal computer and Internet
have found revolutionary ways to connect people, entertain them and empower them. But nothing

Essay on Television
The impact that television (A.K.A.– TV) has had on mankind in the last 50 years, is rivaled by few
other inventions throughout modern history. Recently television has been given a bad wrap, seen by
many people as a cruel invention, a 'boob–tube'; mesmerizing and brainwashing its viewers. People
have forgotten TV is an educational and entertaining tool used in the everyday lives of people around
the world. Without TV and its many advantages where would the world be at this very moment,
certainly not in the information age that it is in now.
The average person watches on average ten to fifteen hours of television during a week. This seems
like an awful lot of time to be sitting in front of a television, but...show more content...
This is a good thing, if you keep your priorities straight, because television should not be your
number one priority. The entertainment part of television contributes to keeping people out of
trouble. If a person has nothing else to do and they get into the routine of watching a certain show
then they will be 'off the streets';. Characters on shows can act as role models for their audience and
promote good morals. Sports are another aspect of television entertainment. If someone can not
actually attend a sporting event in person, more than likely they can still catch the action on
television. What better way to be entertained than sitting on your couch!
Television is also helpful with product information, and although commercials are not regarded as
the most entertaining aspect of television, they sure can be informative. Without television
commercials a person may never hear about a product that could benefit their life. For example, a
commercial for allergy medication can let someone know that there is relief for their symptoms.
This may never have been possible if the person wasn't watching television and saw the commercial
for the product. Advertising and product information, is just one more of many reasons why
television is so useful.

Life Without Parents Essay
Parents have a large impact on their children and how their life will turn out. Each parent will
affect a different aspect of their child's life. Fathers tend to affect more of the physical attributes of
a child and provide money for the family while mothers will help with the emotional side of a
child's development. Having both parents present greatly aids in developing a more well–rounded
child. When a family has both parents involved the family runs better as not all of the weight of
raising an individual falls on one parent. Individuals with both parents engaged in their lives feel
more confident and comfortable with themselves. Parents should not believe it is okay to leave a
child. When a parent leaves a child because of their own choice or death, there are many negative
physical, emotional, and psychological impacts which will result in the child's life.
When a parent leaves or dies, there are many different physical, emotional, and psychological
impacts on the children. One study shows that when the father is not present in a child's life this
"'inadequate family structure makes children more susceptible to drug use as a coping mechanism"
(Davidson, "Life Without Father"). Without a father figure, some individuals seem lost and seek
out different items or activities to try and fill the void. Also, without both parents in the house, the
child would have more freedom since only one parent is responsible for them. This freedom allows

History of Television
THE HISTORY OF TELEVISION
The television has become such an integral part of homes in the modern world that it is hard to
imagine life without television. The boob tube, as television is also referred to, provides
entertainment to people of all ages. Not just for entertainment value, but TV is also a valuable
resource for advertising and different kinds of programming.
The television as we see it and know it today was not always this way. Let's take a brief look at the
history of television and how it came into being.
TIMELINE OF TV HISTORY
Different experiments by various people, in the field of electricity and radio, led to the development
of basic technologies and ideas that laid the foundation for the invention of television....show more

Although the discoveries of these men in the department of mechanical television were very
innovative, by 1934, all television systems had converted into the electronic system, which is what
is being used even today.
ELECTRONIC TELEVISION HISTORY
The experiments of Swinton in 1907, with the cathode ray tube for electronic television held great
potential but were not converted into reality. Finally, in 1927, Philo Taylor Farnsworth was able to
invent a working model of electronic television that was based on Swinton's ideas.
His experiments had started when he was just a little boy of 14 years. By the time he became 21,
Philo had created the first electronic television system, which did away with the rotating disks and
other mechanical aspects of mechanical television. Thus was born the television system which is the
basis of all modern TVs.
All the early television systems were black and white, with color television being invented much
later on. Since the early invention of television in the beginning of the 1900s, history has seen many
firsts in the area of television.
TELEVISION HISTORY: THE TIMELINE
Television was not invented by a single inventor, instead many people working together and alone
over the years, contributed to the evolution of television.

Pros & Cons of Television
PROS & CONS OF TELIVISION
Nowadays television plays an important role in everyone's life. By being the source of information,
it provides an endless entertainment for the whole family units. As a result, every family now owns
a television and television is now becoming a very useful device for every family. So, in this
situation we should say that there many advantages and disadvantages in watching television. And
this is the time to discuss the advantages first.
Firstly, the television brings us news from all over the world through local T.V channels and
satellites T.V channels about political happenings, social events, festivals, sports news and weather
forecasting. There are also many programs showing the beauties and sceneries in the...show more

For the present we have considered the advantages of the television. Now let's discuss about the
disadvantages of television. Because of the television, social problems such as educational and
health regarding to teenagers, are becoming worse. These were exposed by a research done lately
that teenagers in most of countries are addicted to television programs. As a result of this addiction
that teenagers are used to forget their studies and neglect homeworks. As instance, this kind of
issues were recorded specially so during Sirasa Super Star reality television program which have
been telecasted on Saturdays and Sundays. Students wasted a lot of time by concentrating on that
T.V show instead of studying. As side effect of this, in 2005 O/L and A/L results have been reduced.
Similarly that they are dillying–dallying in front of the television teenagers are come up with health
issues like adipose and defects of vision. These kinds of social problems would become worse issues
in future.
Another bad issue of watching television is that some of the programs which are carrying bad
scenes are not being filtered. Therefore this can be affected to the growing age of the teenagers as
their minds are not really matured. Withal, most of the teenagers love to experience new adventure
things and to imitate super heroes like superman, spider man and etc.... Therefore, sometimes, many
of the teenagers come up with fateful disasters. As instances, in by–gone times, few deads

Essay Life Without Television
Life without Television
When my family's only television set went to the repair shop the other day, my parents, my sister,
and I thought we would have a terrible week. How could we get though the long evenings in such a
quiet house? What would it be like without all the shows to keep us company? We soon realized,
though, that living without television for a while was a stroke of good fortune. It became easy for
each of us to enjoy some activities alone, to complete some postponed chores, and to spend
rewarding time with each other and friends.
First of all, with no television to compete for our time, we found plenty of hours for personal
interests. We all read more that week than we had read during the six months...show more content...
After that, we started to realize that television had killed our time so much.
Finally, and probably most important, we spent time with each other. Instead of just being in the
same room together while we stared at a screen, we actually talked for many pleasant hours. I had
never thought about what my family members' worries. Through we were talking each other, we
could share our troubles. Moreover, for the first time in years, my family played some games
together. We played Monopoly, which was my favorite game, and Texas holdem poker, which was
my father's favorite game. And because we didn't have to worry about missing this or that show, we
had some family friends over on a couple of evenings and spent an enjoyable time with them. We
realize that our family is the best friend.
Once our television returned, we were not prepared to put it in the attic. But we had a sense of
how it can take over our lives if we are not careful. We are now more selective. We turn on the set
for our favorite shows, certain sports events, and the news, but we don't leave it running all evening.
As a result, we find we can enjoy television and still have time left over for other activities and

Could We Live Without Tv Essay
Opinion essay
Topic: TV: could you live without it?
Azizov Saidkabir
20102070
Have we ever asked ourselves "Could we live without television? Do we know what kinds of
programs our children are watching? How do they influence to our personality?"
Television is an information channel and telecommunication system for broadcasting and receiving
images, pictures, animations, and movies from a long distance. Television has a variety of programs.
Programs on television are supposed to be entertaining for all ages. But in my opinion when you
watch television excessively, it is less likely to be beneficial. I believe that the time people watch
television should be strictly limited–for the sake of health, education and child...show more content...
I never believed that television is truly harmful for eyes, and that focusing your eyes too long on any
one thing can cause eye strain (asthenopia). Encyclopedia.com describes eye strains as the "fatigue
of the eyes, such as that caused by reading or looking at a computer screen for too long." ("Eye
strain." The Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English. 2009. Retrieved September 27, 2010 from
Encyclopedia.com: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1O999–eyestrain.html.) There are also other
causes for asthenopia for example when a person sits on a floor and watches television, with his
head tilted up. Basically, we have to be careful about watching television when we are sitting too
close to it. It is better and safer to sit further away from the television when you are watching it, or
not to watch it excessively. A final, yet serious result of watching too much television is its link to
obesity. Watching television does not add on calories to your stomach, but it does absolutely
nothing to help you burn them. As you sit there, watching your favorite shows, you are not doing
anything to burn the calories you ate earlier. So, eating foods while you are sitting in front of the
television for a couple of hours everyday add a lot of calories to your body which may be a large
reason of becoming fat. In a study described by Gabe Mirkin, M.D., in the Journal of

I never believed that television is truly harmful for eyes, and that focusing your eyes too long on any one thing can cause eye strain (asthenopia). Encyclopedia.com describes eye strains as the "fatigue of the eyes, such as that caused by reading or looking at a computer screen for too long." ("Eye strain." The Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English. 2009. Retrieved September 27, 2010 from Encyclopedia.com: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1O999–eyestrain.html.)
