By the turn of the 20th century, four out of ten Americans lived in cities where skyscrapers and electric rail systems were emerging to accommodate rapid urbanization. Racial discrimination was also widespread and legalized through Jim Crow laws and Plessy v. Ferguson, while new technologies like airplanes, movies, and mass media began connecting and entertaining the nation.
