The document discusses guidelines for library services for international students produced by a project group formed in 2006. ncarcerated offenders face a number of additional challenges to those faced by most other students studying at a distance. Lack of internet access is especially problematic for those studying in a sector that is increasingly characterised by online course offerings.
This paper will outline a proposed trial project at South Queensland Correctional Centre (operated by Serco Australia Pty Ltd and currently at Borallon Correctional Centre) as a first step in addressing this challenge. The focus will be on those incarcerated offenders studying course TPP7120 Studying to Succeed within the Tertiary Preparation Program at the University of Southern Queensland. Though the course is offered online, blocks of printed material and CD ROMs are distributed to the incarcerated students. Even so, their experiences are not comparable to those accessing the course online through USQ’s instance of Moodle. Consequently, students who are incarcerated offenders are not achieving all of the information literacy and other e-learning skills available for other TPP7120 students or the graduate attributes set out in the course profile.
In order to redress these issues, it is proposed that a portable version of the course Moodle site be loaded directly onto a local server within the correctional centre. Students will access this rather than the version located on the university servers located in Toowoomba. This will be supplemented by eReaders – without internet connectivity - which will hold relevant library resources, removing the need for Education and Learning Support Officers to download resources and enabling students to extend their study time beyond the correctional centre’s education computer lab time.
It is expected this will result in numerous benefits, among them: students will be participating in learning experiences more closely related to those experienced by students outside of the prison system; they will be learning relevant IT skills; USQ will be fulfilling its obligation in relation to equity of access; and will be addressing the Federal Government’s agenda of increasing participation by socially and economically disadvantaged groups in higher education.
The Kingdom of Cambodia is a Southeast Asian nation that has experienced tremendous growth in their higher education system. The globalization and privatization of Cambodia's higher education system has increased the opportunities for students who traditionally would be unlikely candidates to attain a college education. However, these significant changes have also unearthed deeper issues in the academic system and perhaps, future cycles of educational inequality.
Presentation by Philip Hider, Charles Sturt University and Barbara Spiller, Australian Council for Educational Research Australia, at Write Edit Index 2015, an Australian conference for editors, indexers, and publishing professionals. This case study focuses on the process of improving subject access to a collection of resources related to the scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education. It describes how existing controlled vocabularies in the education field were evaluated as candidates for adoption. The Australian Thesaurus of Education Descriptors (ATED) was selected and enhanced to meet the specific needs of the OLT Resource Library.
Research in international education can take many forms: whether you are trying to identify best practice in transnational collaboration, investigating strategic planning or measuring outcomes, you face the choice of how best to achieve the desired aims of the study. This session explores some of the mystery surrounding research by looking at some of the practical approaches to undertaking it and by providing insights into the challenges and benefits of the research methods available.

Monroe Community College (MCC) is a regional open education leader expanding access to affordable education and fostering faculty innovation through the adoption of open educational resources and practices. In June 2016, MCC and four other SUNY community colleges (Clinton, Herkimer, Mohawk Valley, and Tompkins Cortland) were awarded a grant as part of Achieving the Dream’s OER Degree Initiative. In 2017. The SUNY system was able to provide additional funding for creating OER courses through a statewide grant. Librarians are coordinating the initiatives which include instructional design and project management support for the faculty teams who are building OER courses and a Biology OER degree.
Join us for this webinar to hear from Katie Ghidiu, MCC Interim Library Services Director, who oversees the OER projects and several of the MCC faculty who are participating in the SUNY OER funded efforts. She will share how MCC develops professional development opportunities and provides faculty incentives including release time and stipends to support this important work. She will be joined by Dr. Rollo Fisher, the director of Choral and Vocal Activities, at MCC who created a completely OER Voice Class last year, and is now using SUNY OER funds to create OER for four additional classes.

Dr. Patricia Profeta, Dean of Learning Resources at Indian River State College will share how she and other Florida State College librarians have developed open courses on information literacy and internet search to prepare students for college-level research. These courses have been published in Florida’s Orange Grove repository with a Creative Commons license.
Donna Okubo, Senior Manager of Community Outreach and Advocacy, at Public Library of Science (PLoS) will share their amazing collection of open science resources and journals that you can use in the classroom at your college. PLoS has implemented a new publishing model to support scholarly authorship and allow public access to the peer-reviewed results.
Nicole Allen, OER Program Director at, Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) of the Academic and Research Library (ARL) will share SPARC’s plan to broadens its advocacy from open research to include all open educational resources (OER). Working with college libraries to extend their copyright expertise to include open policies is a critical component.

The Higher Education Academy was formed in 2004 as “a single, central body to support the enhancement of learning and teaching in higher education” in the UK. It currently spends about half of its ~£25million annual budget supporting a Subject Network of 24 National Subject Centres, designed to support teaching and learning across all the main subject disciplines in UK higher education. Although the Subject Centre network is well used by many academic staff, the majority probably have little contact with them. The aim of this session is to discuss ways in which teaching staff can work with, and potentially be supported by, the their discipline’s Subject Centre. Examples will include how staff at Liverpool work with their Subject Centre to develop teaching resources, help train and support fellow academic teachers and students, and even inform national policy.
Teaching Development Grants are a common way that Subject Centres support academic staff, providing funds to develop teaching resources or investigate teaching policy. A major study has just been completed by UKCME (the materials subject centre) analysing the characteristics of Teaching Development Grants which produced useful outputs for individual academics, departments and/or the discipline’s community. These will be discussed by UKCME researchers and colleagues in the History, Classics and Archaeology Subject Centre also based in Liverpool. The session should be of interest to any teaching staff at Liverpool who currently work with their discipline’s subject centre, or have thought about doing so but were not sure where to start.
