A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. MY 3 FAVORITE
ASSIGNMENTS/DISCUSSION
I enjoyed the discussion about the different level of thinkers. It opened my
mind to this concept. I started evaluating everything more carefully.
The “famous failures” discussion was probably my favorite. It taught me to
never give up. I also learned that despite what anyone might say to you
always believe in your self.
Another lesson that I liked was on your frog. The point of this is to get the
most difficult task done and out of the way. This has been a very helpful
tip.
3. MY 3 FAVORITE JOURNALS
Journal entry 12 was a eye opening journal for me. I liked it because it
helped me see how I was using my time. This journal allowed me to cut
out unimportant time wasting activities.
Journal entry 27 was a pretty straight forward assignment. It reminded me
of my morals and why I make the choices I do. It was also a solid reminder
of how difficult it can be to have integrity.
My favorite journal was entry 32. this journal allowed me to assess my
growth throughout the course. It showed me how I have progressed as an
individual.
4. FAVORITE WEEK
Week 1 was my favorite week. It was kind of exciting starting a new
chapter in my life.
5. LESSONS
The lesson on eating your frog is a lesson I will always remember. It has
helped me to become more productive.
Another lesson that I will carry with me throughout my remaining
semesters is the lesson on dependence, codependence, independence,
and interdependence.
Finally, the lesson about metacognition has been one of the most
interesting. It taught me how to improve my mindset and critical thinking.
6. SELF-ASSESSMENT SCORES
45-62 : 1. Accepting personal responsibility.
41-58 : 2. Discovering self-motivation.
44-47 : 3. Mastering self-management.
38-45 : 4. Employing interdependence.
45-52 : 5. Gaining self-awareness.
35-63 : 6. Adopting lifelong learning.
52-57 : 7. Developing emotional intelligence.
42-71 : 8. Believing in myself.
So far what I have learned from this course is that I have a bad habit of
procrastinating. I feel this course has taught me how to better manage my time
in a more effective way to get things done. Lastly, it has taught me the important
life skill of self-awareness, which helps me in adapting to changes in my life that
allow me to continue reaching for my goals
7. GRAYSONLINK
Some information I found from my graysonlink assignment is that my
Holland code is IER (investigative 24, enterprising 11, realistic 10) and that
one of the careers that interest me is being a environmental technician.
4 things I learned about my future career interests or the career itself are:
1. Environmental techs make just over $44,000 a year.
2. They usually only need an associates degree.
3. They work hand in hand with environmental scientists.
4. The work time is a little over 40 hours a week.
8. IN MY BEST LIFE
I would be an environmental technician making good money to take care
of my family.
9. IN MY BEST LIFE
I plan on having a new car.
I also plan on
having a wife
and 2 children
living in a nice
house.
