THEMATIC ANALYSIS
Nandita Das’ poem ‘Newton’s Law’ is all about a childhood memoir spiced up with a generous
amount of humour. It also pokes an unintended pun on the dry scientific facts that children are forced
to shallow in their formative years. If the curiosity is not aroused children would only take a morbid
interest and it would result in passive listening. Scenes of similar one occur in everyone’s life. The
port with her brave selection of words expresses her embarrassment she once had in her school days.

INFROMAL TALK
The teacher enters the class and tries to establish

teacher should be engaging and creative in the class
so as to create inquisitive attitude among the
students. Students are given ample scope to engage
themselves in the talk. Teacher initiates discussion
on any interesting topics to reduce their inhibition in
talking and interacting in an English class.

LINK TALK
Tr:
Do you like your science class?
Who is teaching you science?
Is the class interesting?
Okay, then I have a question for all of you....
What would you do when you are called by the
teacher who noticed that you were inattentive in class?
Lr1: I will try to answer it.
Lr2: I would cry.
Lr3: I might become tensed and admit that I was
inattentive.
Tr: So, in the last class we had discussed about a
person. Right!!
Who was she?
What was her name?
Today we are going to look into a poem written by
Nandita Das.
The poem humorously portrayed her awful experience
in science class during her school days.
Tr: Do you know to which genre of poetry does this
poem belong?
It belongs to memoir. A memoir is a description of the
poet’s life. Otherwise it can be defined as an account
of a person’s personal life.
The teacher makes the students to pronounce the
word.
So, the poem for the day is NEWTON’S LAW
written by NANDITA DAS
Explanation of the title
The teacher asks for an explanation of the title from
the student’s side and later explains the title to the

 What happened to Nandita when the teacher
asked her to explain the law?
 Did her friends tease her?
.
Oral Summary:
Nandita Das presents a very amusing
situation in a highly thought provoking
way in her poem Newton’s Law. The
poet is inattentive in the class. It is the
science class. The teacher calls her to
explain Newton’s Law of Gravity and
mass. Her mind becomes blank. There
are louder heartbeats. For an answer,
the girl tries hard.
She stands before the class trembling
with fear. She fails to explain gravity.
Then she falls off the stage onto the
floor. Other students roared with
laughter.
