the poet.

(1) develop creativity and imagination.
(2) encourage them for versification.
(3) analyse and identify the theme of the poem.
Content Analysis : The poet tries to depict the toughness and sharpness of the cactus which is
not normally associated with beauty. The poem celebrates the unacknowledged
beauty and power of the marginalised.
Teaching Learning Resources : Text book, internet, picture of the author, picture of cactus.
Perquisites : They might he familiar with the plant cactus. They might be aware of the
peculiarities of that plant. They must have read other poems written by
K. Satchidanandan.

Today we are going to learn the poem ‘Cactus’ (BB)
written by K. Satchidanandan (BB)
Informal Explanation by the teacher.
‘Cactus’ is a poem which was duly translated into English
from Malayalam. K. Satchidanandan is one of leading
writers in Kerala, is regarded as one of the pioneers of
new poetry in Malayalam.
The students interact actively and pleasantly.
The students listen carefully. They identifies the picture of
the author and that of cactus.

Model recitation by the teacher
The teacher recites the poem with correct stress,
intonation and rhythm.

The teacher asks the students to read the poem silently

The teacher reads the poem and a through explanation is
given and with the meanings of difficult words.
Megaphoning the doubts
The teacher clarifies the doubts of the students or groups.
Lets improve
The teacher divides the class into different groups.

The teacher asks them to versify a poem with the quote
given.

Convert the poem into a conversation among cacti
remembering their good old days and the troubles and
limitations they are facing as of today.
Comprehension Questions
The teacher check the students understanding level by
asking some questions to them.
1. What is the nature of cactus language?
Ans : It speaks the language of thorns which is sharp
and piercing.
2. What does the cactus stand for ?
Ans : Cactus represents the marginalised. It has been
abandoned by all. It creates a different beauty which is
unromantic to the core.
Loud reading by the Pupil
The teacher ask some of the students to recite the poem
to the whole class.
