Lesson plan Year 5SK (Topic: The King's Decision)

  • 1. Subject : English Class : 5 Ibn Khaldun Enrolment : 33 Date/ Day : 14.04.16/ Thursday Time : 8.40 a.m. - 9.40 a.m. Duration : 60 minutes Level of pupils : Intermediate Theme : World of Stories Topic : The King’s Decision Module : Reading Content Standards Learning Standards 2.2 By the end of the 6- year primary schooling, pupils will be able to demonstrate understanding of a variety of linear and non- linear texts in the form of print and non- print materials using a range of strategies to construct meaning. 2.2.1 Able to apply word attack skills by: (b) identifying idioms Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to: 1. read the story and match 5 idioms with its meanings. 2. rearrange the puzzles of idioms and construct 6 sentences based on the idioms. CCE/ EE : Language Content : Instructional Materials : Wordcards, tasksheet, mini book, jigsaw puzzles, PPT slides, projector, laptop. Previous Knowledge : Pupils had been asked to do some reading on idioms in the previous lesson. Moral value - Think wisely before making decisions. Idioms - blew his top, make fun, one by one, put their best foot forward, make up his mind
  • 2. Stage / Time Content Teaching/ Learning Activities Rationale Remarks Set Induction (±5 minutes) Secret letter code  Topic: The King’s Decision 1. Teacher writes blanks spaces on the whiteboard. 2. Pupils identify letters to form a word. 3. Teacher asks pupils to identify the topic. 4. Teacher tells and writes the topic on the board.  To arouse pupils’ curiosity  To develop some initial idea related to the topic  To recall pupils’ prior knowledge Presentation (±15 minutes) Wordcards  Idioms: blew his top, make fun, one by one, put their best foot forward, make up his mind 1. Teacher pastes wordcards on the board. 2. Pupils are asked to match the idioms with its meanings. 3. Teacher checks pupils’ work. 4. Teacher displays PPT slides on idioms. 5. Teacher explains the idioms. 6. Pupils are asked to construct examples of sentences using the idioms  To give input to the pupils  Resource: Wordcards, PPT slides, projector, laptop Practice (±18 minutes) Read and match the idioms with its meanings 1. Teacher explains the instructions to the pupils. 2. Pupils read the story and match the idioms with its meanings. 3. Pupils are given time to complete the task. 4. Teacher discusses the answers with the pupils. 5. Teacher emphasises on the moral value.  To test pupils’ understanding  Resource: Tasksheet  Moral value: Think wisely before making decisions. Production (±17 minutes) Mini book about idioms 1. Teacher divides pupils into group and explains the instructions. 2. Teacher distributes mini books and jigsaw puzzles to the pupils. 3. Pupils match the puzzles with its meaning. 4. Teacher asks pupils to check the answers. 5. Pupils are asked to copy  To enhance pupils’ understanding  Resource: Jigsaw puzzles, mini book.  Thinking skills: Construct 6 sentences based on the idioms.
