Procedures
(2 minutes)
I will greet students and ask them what date is today.
In order to review the vocabulary that we used in the previous class, I will write some
words on the board in groups of 4. These words should be related in some way to the 5
different types of holidays that we learned. Students will have to find the words that don’t fit
and explain why they think so. For example:
- Sunglasses – Ball – Jacket – Towel
(I will write this prompt on the board: “Jacket is the odd one out because it’s not for a
beach holiday”. However, I will accept different answers only if students support them well)
Other examples:
- Camera – Sleeping bag – Phone – Umbrella
- Netflix – books – Phone – Map
- Hair gel - First aid kit – insect repellent – Batteries
Then I will ask them to label these groups of words according to the type of holiday they
belong. One student will come forward and write the type of holiday next to the
corresponding group of words (beach/ sightseeing/ camping/ adventure holiday,
staycation), and 3 more students will do the same.
Transition: “Great! Now let’s think about where and how we can go on holidays”
3. I will ask some students individually the following questions that I will write on the board:
- When was your last holiday?
- Where did you go?
- how did you get there?
I expect them to say they got there by car, train, plane or some other transport (probably in
L1). I will elicit their answers in English and write them on the board. After asking a few
students I will tell them they have 5 minutes to discuss the same questions in pairs taking
turns to answer them.
When they all finish, I will ask students about the different forms of transportation
mentioned by their colleagues and I will write some of them on the board: by plane, by car,
by train, by bus or by boat (we only need these for now). I will draw visual aids next to the
words on the board to help learners remember their meaning.
Transition: “Perfect! Now we’re going to play a game”
“Find someone who”:
For this game, students will have to walk around the classroom and find people who have
the characteristics described on the sheet (e.g.: someone who likes to travel by train).
When they find someone, they will have to write the name of the person in the first column
and write extra details or information in the second column.
I will model the activity before handing the sheet. I will draw a simplified version of the
chart on the board with only one line, like this:
Classmate Name Extra Information
…Likes the beach
I will ask a student “do you like the beach?” and in case he/she says yes, I will write his/her
name in the first column and ask a follow-up question. For example, “what’s your favourite
beach? When was the last time you went to the beach? Do you prefer playing in the sand
or swimming?”. I will write one of his/her answers in the “extra information” column.
Then I will hand the sheets to the students and tell them to do the same. It doesn’t matter
the order in which the table is filled. The first student to complete the table will be the
winner. Before the game starts, I will have to pre-teach some vocabulary that students
need to know. As in the case of “travel”, “travelled”, “is scared”, and “never”. I will write a
small glossary on the board.
Sheet:
Find someone who...
Student’s name: Classmate Name Extra Information
4. ...travelled by train
last year
...is scared to
travel by plane
...likes adventure
holidays
...doesn’t like
sightseeing
holidays
...never travelled
by boat
...likes to travel by
car
...never travelled
by bus
In case students need help for asking additional questions to their classmates, I will tell
them to think about Wh questions like the ones we used in the presentation. Using: when,
what, how, who, why and where, or I could give them an example.
(Students who finish early will be able to begin with the closure activity)
Transition: “Alright, time’s up! Let's move on”
Students should write their favorite means of transport in their notebooks and give 3
reasons why they like it.
For example:
I like the plane...
because of the beautiful views of the sky.
because it is fast.
because you can watch movies while travelling.
Transition: “Great answers! See you on Thursday”
