At the beginning of the lesson, the learners
will be instructed to share their ideas about
the photo which will be projected on screen.
They will provide possible dialogue for the
characters’ depicted emotions in the photo.

The learners should be able to:
1. Note and distinguish the details in the poems;
2. Determine the significance of the story, “The Devouring Rock” to their
daily experiences; and
3. Create and perform a task, aligned with the learners’ 21st century skills,
that depicts the lesson of the story and its impact to the lives of the
people.

 Rubrics will be prepared for orals, written
outputs, and individual and group
performance.
 Students will also be given guidelines for
self-evaluation.

ENGAGE: 3 minutes
With the previous activity, the learners will be
asked to cite situations they witness everyday
which reflect the similar scenario shown in the
photo.
 Powerpoint Presentation
EXPLORE: 20 minutes
The learners will now be divided into four
groups. Each group will be given a specific
task to do as they read and brainstorm about
the story, “The Devouring Rock”.
The learners will be grouped according to
their inclination.
The Bookworm Group- This group will be
tasked to find out the operational meaning of
the unfamiliar words and phrases used in the
story
The Star Magic- This group will be assigned
to infer and analyze the traits of the
characters in the story.
The MMK – This group will be tasked to
relate the story with the pressing problems of
the townspeople of Laoac. They may also cite
specific individuals whom they think
demonstrate the same generating idea
depicted in their lives.
The Devouring Rock - This group will find
out the root causes of societal problems
present in the municipality which greatly affect
the lives of the people particularly the children
and their parents.

EXPLAIN: 10minutes
The learners will be provided enough time for
the brainstorming and group discussion about
the given tasks.
After which, they will be asked to arranged
the story puzzle and to explain the order of

Directions: Arrange the following pictures to
create a story strip for Batu Belah Batu
Bertangkup. Number the pictures from 1 to
15 in the space provided for.
ELABORATE: 10minutes
The learners will now answer the big
questions:
“What are the devouring rocks in the today’s
world?”
“How can we overcome our devouring rocks?”
Process Questions:
1. What did the mother feel after knowing that
her fish roe was eaten?
2. Why do you think it came across to the
mother to commit suicide?
3. What does Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup

represent? How did you say so?
4. Does this story have similar themes with
some of our own? Cite some famous
folktales.
5. Describe Mak Mina, Mawar and Bulat
through characterization. How do they

EVALUATE: 5minutes
At this point, the learners will present their
group output. The teacher will facilitate the
discussion.

EXTEND :10minutes
The learners will be asked to create a
Facebook Page that will promote self-
awareness on how to overcome depression
and other related cases.
They will also be instructed to gather data
from the School Guidance Office and DSWD
of the Municipality of Laoac to trace the cases
of depression and what remedies were done
to aid these individuals.
Note: If the teacher will be able to supervise
this activity, this will surely be of big help to
people who need help.

INTRODUCTION:
Struggles are part of this journey we call life. We are often faced with problems
which we consider the toughest ones. In the story, “The Devouring Rock”, we will be
able to unravel how the characters acted on the struggles they were faced.
It is also a good springboard for us to re-think in order to solve the problem in
broader perspective as a man of the 21st century and to influence others with our little
steps toward the good of all.
ACTIVITY 1: LET THE HEART SOFTEN THE ROCK!
A. Objectives
1. Identify possible causes of teenage depression in the Municipality of Laoac;
2. Provide possible solutions that may be implemented to help the teenagers who
suffer from depression.
B. Procedure
1. Using the table table, list down the possible causes of teenage depression in
Laoac, Pangasinan.
Causes of Teenage Depression Possible Solutions/ Recommendation
2. Discuss with the group, how you can possible help prevent and solve this kind
of problem.
3. The results may be your springboard to create a meaningful facebook page for
this kind of problem. (Part of the Lesson: Extend)
In a nutshell, true love and happiness will never be satisfied by
things which will never love us back. Focus on people not on things.

  • 1. Republic of the Philippines Region I Division of Pangasinan II Laoac National High School Laoac, Pangasinan LESSON EXEMPLAR IN ENGLISH 8 Code EN8LT-IIIa-11.1 Number of Hours : 1 hr. Domain Grade 8 Cluster English 8: Afro-Asian Literature Lesson 3 Korean Poems (Tree of Unhappiness, Pomegranates, Girl in the Rain) Standard The learner identifies the distinguishing features of notable poems, short stories, dramas, and novels contributed by Southeast Asian writers References English 8 Module Learning Cycle ELICIT : 2 minutes At the beginning of the lesson, the learners will be instructed to share their ideas about the photo which will be projected on screen. They will provide possible dialogue for the characters’ depicted emotions in the photo. Materials and teacher’s Tips/ Notes  Powerpoint Presentation  List of possible dialogues Defining Success Objectives The learners should be able to: 1. Note and distinguish the details in the poems; 2. Determine the significance of the story, “The Devouring Rock” to their daily experiences; and 3. Create and perform a task, aligned with the learners’ 21st century skills, that depicts the lesson of the story and its impact to the lives of the people. Assessment  Rubrics will be prepared for orals, written outputs, and individual and group performance.  Students will also be given guidelines for self-evaluation.  Formative assessment will be given. Key Points  Explain the significance of title of the story  Infer the traits of character, the general mood of expression in a selection, the turn out if some episodes were changed  Improve vocabulary through discovering word meanings

ENGAGE: 3 minutes With the previous activity, the learners will be asked to cite situations they witness everyday which reflect the similar scenario shown in the photo.  Powerpoint Presentation EXPLORE: 20 minutes The learners will now be divided into four groups. Each group will be given a specific task to do as they read and brainstorm about the story, “The Devouring Rock”. The learners will be grouped according to their inclination. The Bookworm Group- This group will be tasked to find out the operational meaning of the unfamiliar words and phrases used in the story The Star Magic- This group will be assigned to infer and analyze the traits of the characters in the story. The MMK – This group will be tasked to relate the story with the pressing problems of the townspeople of Laoac. They may also cite specific individuals whom they think demonstrate the same generating idea depicted in their lives. The Devouring Rock - This group will find out the root causes of societal problems present in the municipality which greatly affect the lives of the people particularly the children and their parents.  Rubrics  Printed group task  Photocopies of the story  Video Clip EXPLAIN: 10minutes The learners will be provided enough time for the brainstorming and group discussion about the given tasks. After which, they will be asked to arranged the story puzzle and to explain the order of  Activity Sheets  Powerpoint Presentation

ELABORATE: 10minutes The learners will now answer the big questions: “What are the devouring rocks in the today’s world?” “How can we overcome our devouring rocks?” Process Questions: 1. What did the mother feel after knowing that her fish roe was eaten? 2. Why do you think it came across to the mother to commit suicide? 3.   • 4. represent? How did you say so? 4. Does this story have similar themes with some of our own? Cite some famous folktales. 5. Describe Mak Mina, Mawar and Bulat through characterization. How do they influence or affect the character of one another? 6. What is the moral/lesson of the story? How does it affect you? Explain your answer. EVALUATE: 5minutes At this point, the learners will present their group output. The teacher will facilitate the discussion.  Rubrics  Feedback Form EXTEND :10minutes The learners will be asked to create a Facebook Page that will promote self- awareness on how to overcome depression and other related cases. They will also be instructed to gather data from the School Guidance Office and DSWD of the Municipality of Laoac to trace the cases of depression and what remedies were done to aid these individuals. We are often faced with problems which we consider the toughest ones. In the story, “The Devouring Rock”, we will be able to unravel how the characters acted on the struggles they were faced. It is also a good springboard for us to re-think in order to solve the problem in broader perspective as a man of the 21st century and to influence others with our little steps toward the good of all. ACTIVITY 1: LET THE HEART SOFTEN THE ROCK! A. Objectives 1. Identify possible causes of teenage depression in the Municipality of Laoac; 2. Provide possible solutions that may be implemented to help the teenagers who suffer from depression. B. Procedure 1. Using the table table, list down the possible causes of teenage depression in Laoac, Pangasinan. Causes of Teenage Depression Possible Solutions/ Recommendation

The results may be your springboard to create a meaningful facebook page for this kind of problem.
