6. Distribution :
• Clupeidae - Indian ocean (both east & west coast).
• Dussumieridae - along Indian & shrilanka coast.
 Food & feeding habit :
• predominantly plankton Feeder.
• juveniles - zooplankton feeder (copepods, crustaceans).
• Adult - phytoplankton ( diatoms like fragillaria,
pleurosigma, dinophysis).

7. Habitat :
 pelagic ( in same age group shoal ).
Peculiar characters :
 for family Clupiedae :
- elongate & compressed body with rows of scutes.
- lateral line absent.
- deciduous scales present on body.

- elongate & not laterally compressed
body.
-abdominal keel absent.

9. Reproduction :
• Sexual maturity attained in most of spp. First
year.
Fecundity :
• 10,000 eggs. On an average.
Age and growth :
• sexual maturity age of first year size of 10-
15cm.
• life span - 2-3 years.

11. Fishing season :
East coast - W.B, Orissa and A.P. in
NOV-MAY.
West coast – Kerala and KA. In AUG- FEB.

• total 2,80,000 tonnes.

13. Mode of harvest :
All traditional, motorized and mechanized boats
are used for catching the sardine.
 Gear and craft :
 Gear – gillnet, shore seine , cast net and bag net.
Craft :
catamaran , dugout canoes, rampani boat
and mechanized boat.

 No excess fishing pressure at present on

Total Indian production 26% in 2015.( highest in Tamil
Nadu).
Lowest production – 69,100 tonnes in 2005.
