Lower limb Orthotics
Foot Orthosis (FO)
Foot orthosis is boot ( shoes) that has
components like supports and wedges to manage
different foot symptoms and deformities
FO used to :-
1. Accommodate foot deformity or pressure
lessions
2. Cushion the foot
3. Alter sensory input or relieving foot pressure
Ankle foot orthosis (AFO)
Ankle foot orthosis is a hard brace worn on
lower leg to support ankle and foot
This keeps the ankle in neutral position during
walking and other daily activities
TYPES OF AFO
• AFO’s can be articulating or non- articulating
• Made of thermoplastic or Metal or metal-
plastic
Thermoplastic AFO
• Solid AFO
• Posterior leaf spring
• Hinged AFO
• FRO
• PTB AFO
PARTS
The combination of these three
components allow the plantarflexion-
knee extension couple (PF/KE) to
occur, causing a knee-extension
moment.
ANTERIOR
TIBIAL SHELL
RIGID ANKLE
FOOT PLATE
FRO has a posterior shell like solid ankle
foot
orthosis.
• Toe plate is stiff and long with slight
plantar flexion.
• Anterior shell comfortably capture the
resultant extension moment and
stabilize the knee.
