This document provides an overview of key concepts in nonverbal communication. It defines nonverbal communication as using nonverbal messages to stimulate meaning in another's mind, whether intentionally or not. It outlines 6 functions of nonverbal messaging: complementing, contradicting, accenting, repeating, regulating, and substituting. The major themes to be covered are physical appearance, gestures, face and eye behavior, vocal behavior, space, touch, environment, and time. It also discusses how physical appearance gives first impressions and can influence relationship development and attraction, noting three types of attractiveness: physical, social, and task.
