This document discusses learning analytics and student activity tracking. It summarizes a symposium that included a call for datasets on technology-enhanced learning and an overview of eight datasets that were submitted. It also summarizes several tools for tracking student activities and interactions, such as blogs, Twitter, eclipse plugins, and the Student Activity Meter. Finally, it discusses design-based research methodology and using dashboards to provide awareness of student effort, resource use, and communication based on analytics of activities in tools like Moodle.

Building an ePortfolio and eLearning experience that rocks is anything but trivial: having a good
learning design approach and a good command of ePortfolio methodology is essential. After three
years of helping companies and educational institutions in their Mahara projects, I have become
convinced that Open Badges are the key to fostering better learning design.
In my talk, I will explain how Open Badges can help to reshape the learning design to foster learners’
engagement and attainment. I will briefly outline the Open Badge architecture; and then present the
framework I am using to implement Mahara and Moodle in schools and in the work place.
I will also demonstrate tools that support the Open Badges process, from brainstorming and creating
new badges to the issuing of the badge by the institution, and the badge’s storage and use by the
student.

Microservices are where it’s at. Everything is easier to manage when it’s smaller, right? ‘Micro’ things may appear to be easier to manage, but there is always a macro context, and working with people and teams is no exception. Join this session to learn more.
Microservices are where it’s at. Everything is easier to manage when it’s micro, right? Micro code bases (less than 10 LOC), micro containers (less than 10Mb), and micro teams (less than one person???). ‘Micro’ things may appear to be easier to manage, but there is always a macro context, and working with people and teams is no exception. This talk presents some of the challenges the OpenCredo team have seen when implementing microservices within a range of organisations, and we’ll suggest tricks and techniques to help you manage your ‘micro’ teams and the ‘macro’ level.
Topics covered include: leadership - advice on creating shared understanding, conveying strategy, and developing your team; empathy - because understanding others is at the heart of everything you do; organisational structure - from Zappos’ holocracy to MegaOrg’s strict hierarchy, from Spotify’s squads, chapters and guilds, to BigCorp’s command and control. There is a management style for everybody; and more.
Leveraging Exhibitions as a Needs-Based Skill Development Program in Librarie...Sara Sterkenburg
This presentation was delivered on June 24, 2015 at the 2015 Rare Book and Manuscript Pre-conference in Oakland, CA.
Summary:
In 2014, Vanderbilt’s exhibition team discussed changing its curatorial model to be less aligned with the museum model, and more oriented toward the 21st century technologies demanded widely by our users. We designed the current season around this idea, leveraging ourselves as a skill-development program. We focused on teaching XML markup, version control using Github, copyright, open access, and descriptive metadata.
Challenging budgets push many institutions to rely on webinars to teach new concepts, often with minimal results. The big learning curve of some technologies calls for hands-on learning in a project environment. This can be jump-started by exhibition programs in special collections libraries, often with few people and at minimal cost. I will discuss our process, including workflow, training, roadblocks/troubleshooting, and takeaways.
Presentation for Harvard's ABCD Technology in Education group:
The Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS) is a unique entity at Harvard - it combines research, software development, and specialized services to provide innovative solutions to research and scholarship problems at Harvard and beyond. I will talk about the software projects that IQSS is currently working on (Dataverse, Zelig, Consilience, and OpenScholar), including the research and development processes, the benefits provided to the Harvard community, and the impacts on research and scholarship.
Designing a synergistic relationship between undergraduate Data Science educa...Ciera Martinez
Biodiversity data is extremely approachable – the concept of a specimen existing in time and place is clear to grasp and interesting to a wide range of people. I exploited this inherent feature of Biodiversity data to create an educational framework for teaching undergraduate Data Science. The project utilized Discovery Learning theory, based in the belief that it is best for learners to discover facts and relationships for themselves. Students were given a choice of databases and were mentored through an entire data analysis pipeline, including gathering, cleaning, analyzing, and visualization of the data. Their work culminates into a tutorial posted online (curiositydata.org) – instilling proper documentation, open science, and data management techniques. These tutorials can then be used and remixed as documentation for the databases, curriculum, and workshops detailing how to access and analyze the databases data. Increased documentation will overcome accessibility challenges that plague many Biodiversity databases, in an overarching aim to increase the usage and in turn value of these vital data resources. Computer Science, Statistics, and Biology undergraduates are increasingly “data literate”, and if mentored properly, we can foster a symbiotic relationship between the real-world Data Science education and the increase of usability of Biodiversity databases.
Data science is not Software Development and how Experiment Management can ma...Jakub Czakon
Working on data science projects that are run as if they were software development can sometimes feel like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. In this talk, I will explain why that happens and what people do to try and fix it. Lately, in the context of machine learning, the concept of experiment management, which treats ml experiments as first-class citizens, has been gaining a lot of traction. I will discuss what it is, what are the benefits of using it, and how you can apply it in your work to make run your projects more efficiently.
Learning Analytics Toolkit & TinCan/xAPI@Work Proof Of Concept ProgressLearningCafe
Following on from our last webinar on Sharing our TinCan/xAPI@Work Journey, we give an update on creating a working proof of concept for TinCan/xAPI. Dr Kirsty Kitto will presents on the work being done in developing a toolkit, which uses xAPI to store data about student participation in learning activities designed using standard social media tools such as Facebook etc.
We discuss:
What is the status of adoption of TinCan/xAPI in the industry ? How fast or slowly is it moving now ?What can you realistically achieve now with xAPI ? What is the road map you need to take ?Are there opportunities for the corporate and education sectors to collaborate to increase adoption ?

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
