Experimental Study On Strength And Workability Of Cement...
EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON STRENGTH AND WORKABILITY OF CEMENT MATERIALS
USING MAGNESIUM SILICATE HYDRATE BINDER SYSTEM
H. M. Tran, A. Scott
1,2University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand
There has been increasing studies on magnesium silicate hydrate binder system as an eco cement and
its potential use for nuclear waste immobilization. The cementing properties and workability of
cement paste and mortar using magnesium silicate hydrate binder were examined by compressive
strength, flow test and scanning electron microscopy. The binder composition was proposed based on
stoichiometric ratio. The results showed that magnesium silicate hydrate binder exhibits very high
water demand due to containing high microfine content of amorphous silica (silica fume). However, it
is possible to produce workable mixes at normal water to binder ratio (w/cm=0.40 and below) by use
of polycarboxylate based superplasticizer. Crushed quartz with smooth texture and particle size
coarser than magnesium and silica fume was used as fillers to form ternary system. Use of crushed
quartz fillers contributes to water reduction and improves packing density, hence increases strength of
magnesium silicate hydrate binder system. Mortar samples of the binder containing 40% magnesium
oxide, 40% silica fume (Mg/Si molar ratio = 1.50) and 20% crushed quartz fillers resulted in
encouraging compressive strength of up to 70 MPa.

Descartes Discourse on Method
Understanding Descartes Method of Doubt
Clear your mind, if you will, of everything you have ever seen or known to be true. To begin
understanding Rene Descartes method of doubt, you need to suspend all prejudice and prior judgments
and start with a clean slate for the purpose of discovering some ultimate truth on which to base all
thought. (Kolak, Pg.225). Discouraged with much skepticism from his own beliefs, Descartes was
embarrassed of his own ignorance. He set out to try and accomplish the task of finding an absolute
truth in which he would base his beliefs. Placing upon himself a task to find an axiom or absolute truth
to base all thought, he ventured as a youth in travel to collect a variety in experiences to derive some
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He basically states in his meditations that if there is a God, and he is perceived as good, why would he
deceive our thoughts? This brings up the evil deceiver argument. If we can only know that our
existence is real, who is to say that there is not an outside force that makes of the rest of our reality
that we supposedly live? If our dreams are just distorted pieces of our reality and our reality is merely
a show put on by the evil deceiver, we know for certain we cannot base our beliefs on what we see and
the tools unto which we use to perceive it; i.e. extension, hands, and eyes.
Conclusion
Descartes makes it clear that we cannot be certain of anything. The method of doubt brings us to
understand this better by giving a set of guidelines to follow to systematically understand and get
closer to some kind of truth. By trying to find some truth to base all thoughts on, Descartes tried to
find an absolute truth by coming to the realization that nothing he believed was of any truth. Although
not finding much truth in his journeys, he found a systematic way to come closer to finding truth.
Descartes was presented with a problem of not knowing anything, and by creating the method of
doubt he came closer to finding the truth.

Visual Representations Of Maori Women Essay
This essay examines visual representations of Maori women within the photographic domain. I will
examine and compare three examples of how Maori women were represented within the European
domain in the early twentieth century paying particular attention to the research done by Jacqui Sutton
Beets in her book ?Bitter Sweet: Indigenous women in the Pacific?. Investigating the meanings and
functions based on the ideologies of the time as well as the importance these representations have held
within a social and cultural context for Maori Women and cultural identity. In comparison I will also
examine two Maori artists that have represented Maori women within the contemporary domain and
how the codes and conventions used in portrait photography have transformed the stereotype construct
of early colonial imperialism.
Early representations of New Zealanders are often associated with the notions of hardworking, no.8
wire thinking people that live in an untouched natural environment. These generalisation?s stem from
stereotypes that derived from the pioneers who came to New Zealand and colonized an undiscovered
land and developed a nation. Arguably this is the western view of what New Zealand identity is.
Social change over time has seen New Zealanders transform from a nostalgic L P commercial (which
ironically mainly show white men) into a multi cultural, sophisticated, adventurous people or as Prime
Minister John Key has been quoted ?loyal and proud?. A romantic

Assess whether or not the changes in the structure of the...
Assess whether or not the changes in the structure of the UK industry have been beneficial for the
economy, industries and the consumer.
Over the past 30 years the structure of the UK economy has been transformed. By this I mean there
has been changes in the production and employment between the primary, secondary and tertiary
sectors.
In 1964, 1,201,000 people were employed in the primary sector. By 1995 there were only 383,000
people employed in the primary sector. This shows a decrease of 818,000 employees over 31 years.
This was mainly due to a contraction of output in the coal mining industries, and the collapse of oil
prices in 1986, further contributing toward the declining industry.
The second change in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to this limited availability there was a sharp increase in price, causing the demand to fall, and the
demand for substitutes to increase. As a result there was a decline in output and employment. A prime
example is steel, the substitute being aluminium. International competition had a dramatic affect on
UK structure.
Changing consumer tastes, the creation of new products and the changing comparative costs result in
the redistribution of economic activity around the world. For example the Japanese were able to
produce more reliable motorcycles at a cheaper cost and therefore there was a decline in the UK
motorcycle industry, because Japan had a comparative advantage.
The membership of the EU meant some inevitable restructuring of the UK economy, in accordance
with European comparative advantages, as there were no trade restrictions within the EU (free trade,
no import duties). This lead to an increase in economic activity in the tertiary sector for the UK, where
it has a comparative advantage in banking and finance, (due to specialisation).
The maturity argument states that our changing economic structure simply reflects the changing
pattern of demand that follows from economic development. This statement argues that consumer
demand in a mature economy such as the UK shifts away from goods and towards services. The
capital stock in the UK grew more

R H Coase s Theory of Economic as Applied to Apple
R. H. Coase s Theory of Economic as Applied to Apple Apple is known as one of the best companies
in the world. It is not surprising that Forbes has named the firm the most admired company in the
world for four straight years. This is admiration both from the business world and from consumers
who buy the amazing products Apple has developed. The business itself has been a model of
efficiency and innovation, taking some of the most innovative electronic products ever to market and
forcing the rest of the electronics manufacturing world to follows its lead. It is also a company that
went from almost closing its doors to the level it now maintains in just a few short years. Consumers
are clamoring for new and better products and Apple executives are always happy to oblige. With is
stable of i products, Apple has become one of the best known and most beloved companies around the
world, and there seems to be no end to the types of products that the company can design and the
further accolades the company can accumulate. However, the business model that Apple operates
under needs to be investigated. The company has not received the same stellar regard from
competitors, and environmental activists also have some issues with the way the company operates. To
properly assess the company, this paper will utilize R. H. Coase s theory of economics. The
examination will look specifically at the company s production, organization and innovation through
the lens of Coase s theory. The

I looked and saw that the shadows were gone and I was standing in victorious. I looked at my new
powers with pleasure. I started to shoot fire balls in the air. It was an incredible feeling inside me. I
turned around and the smile on my face disappeared. I realized the place I was at was gone. I was
somewhere else, but not somewhere I wanted to be. All I saw was fire all around me burning houses

Teaching A Foreigner Language And An Training Of Teaching...
The aim of this essay is to reflect the experience of teaching a foreigner language and an analyzation
of teaching strategies. The first part of the essay is an evaluation of the weaknesses and strengths of a
Task Based Learning (TBL). Second part of the essay is a self reflection on my peer teaching lesson
and how I could apply in practice the Presentation, Production, Practice (PPP) teaching strategy and
how to improve my teaching skills.
Firstly, the positive parts of the TBL lesson, the Teacher (T) was leading the lesson by concentrating
on the local needs of the Learners(L) (Tarone and Yule, 1990). To investigate the L s knowledge, she
used the life experience for learning the language (Tarone and Yule,1991:5). It was a well chosen ...

According to Scrivener all these are pending on the language level of the Ls because the activities
should be more effective to use the language (Scrivener, 2010:58.). Ellis suggesting the lesson could
improve with more concentration of leading process than by using fewer tasks. Furthermore, near to
the end of the class the T could not balance the interaction between herself and the Ls and it led to a
diverted situation which expanded the Teacher Talking Time (Stewick, 1980).
Following strategies, I learned during the observation that the best way is to shorten the controlled
practice to use more talking tasks. During the preparation of the lesson, T need to keep the attention of
the Ls, and give clear instructions, use tools such as pictures and the writing on board because they
would lose motivations to do the task easily. Also, during the activity, the T s role is to monitor how
the L could work together in groups and individually. The most practical way of the seating is the
horseshoe arrangement (Gower, Phillips, and Walters, 2014).
In order to identify our strengths and weaknesses of our teaching skills, each member of the class
participated in a 10 minutes peer teaching lesson. My chosen language was Hungarian and the aim of
the lesson was to learn the different pronunciation some letters which English does not include.
The main difficulties I had to face with were the planning the lesson and my anxiety. For me the

Statutory Guidance for governors
Under Section 88 a governing body must: make, and from time to time review, a written statement of
general principles to guide the head teacher in determining measures to promote good behavior; and
notify the head teacher and give him or her related guidance if the governing body wants the school s

Governors are therefore strongly advised to revise their school policies in line with this new guidance,

Section 2 Statutory guidance for governors on their duties as regards the school behavior policy is

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Essay
Lucius Cornelius Sulla From a rather humble beginning Lucius Cornelius Sulla rose to become a great
politician and a powerful general in the Roman Republic. As a general, Sulla lead Roman armies to
many victories. As a politician he became a powerful dictator and yet was responsible for bringing
about many reforms. This essay will prove how he was a great dictator, politician and general, through
discussing his background, his military and political career, his dictatorship, and his accomplishments
in his later years. Sulla was born near Rome, into a politically unimportant patrician family in 138
B.C. He received a good education and lived a normal life. After his father died he was forced to live

The following year Sulla ran and was elected as praetor, the second highest position in the Roman
republic. After his term of praetor was up, he returned to the battle field. This time it was against
Mithridates, King of Pontus. Sulla did not have a full army with him so he had to recruit soldiers from
Roman allies. His ability to get these soldiers and to push Mithridates back, shows his great military
skills. This campaign was also important because it brought Rome into contact with the powerful
Parthia Empire. He was able to arrange a treaty with Parthia, which was a milestone for Sulla. This
would not be the last time he would meet Mithridates in battle. Soon Sulla and Marius again had to
forget there many differences to defend Rome against Allied Italian forces who had declared war on
Rome. They had set up their own government and were preparing to become an independent nation.
This war was known as the Social War because the Latin name for Roman allies was socii. It was
ended by a more important conflict, the invasion of a Roman province in Asia Minor by Mithridates.
The Romans and the Italians signed a peace treaty in 89 B.C. Soon the main focus for Rome was
Mithridates of Pontus in the east. In 88 B.C. Sulla was elected consul. The Senate also named him
commander of the forces against Mithridates. Marius had wanted this command for himself. After
Sulla left Rome Marius convinced the people s assembly to give him

Women s Rights From 1877 To The 1970s
The extension of women s rights from 1877 to the mid 1970s, has changed over time along with the
ideals of the different eras. From the original traditional values to those wild and free spirits that
dominated the culture in the seventies, since then women and their rights have changed.
The improvement of women s rights began back when Republicans first began to work on the
Fifteenth amendment, this amendment was ratified in 1870 and it made the denial of voting due to
race, illegal. The exclusion of women from this amendment caused women s right s activists to start to
take a stand and raise their voices for what they thought they deserved. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was

The most common ways women of different ethnicities were held back were by being barred from
certain jobs. Black, and Latina women were not allowed to work in the southern textile industry, or
hold a secretarial job like many white women did. Instead they were forced to become maids, and
laundresses. (Schaller 594) Another example of the lack of improvement for women in minorities is
the percentage of young Italian girls who were withdrawn from school, in order for them to help
support their family. Roughly 90% left school at the age of 14 to find work. (Schaller 629) Even
though white women were steadily making progress towards equality with their own organizations,
african american women did not see such immediate progress. So they decided to create their own
similar groups such as the National Association of Colored Women. This group took its stance on it s
own separate set of issues such as lynching, and defending the respect of black women. (Schaller 686)

Hieronymus Bosch Essay
For my final project I chose to do a study on the artist Hieronymus Bosch, or more specifically I
decided to focus on his use of owls in his various paintings. Bosch was a very interesting lad and his
paintings lean toward the bizarre end of a normalcy spectrum. Individuals likeminded to Bosch
fascinate me. My mind does not function or view things the same way and I find it very intriguing. I
cannot even imagine what types of discussions (much less guess the probable subjects) Bosch would
have had with his fellow artists in his time.
A secondary reason I chose to explore the meanings behind the use of owls is because I have a
personal fascination with owls. I already knew that owls are well known for their association wisdom,
as well as the association with specific knowledge and erudition that can see through obscurity (and as
the bird of Athena/Minerva, the goddess of wisdom), the owl appears frequently in the emblems of
scholarly publishing houses and book stores (Biedermann, 250.) However, Bosch chose to give his
owls different, unconventional symbolic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

obviously portraying the owl in a positive light. The other depiction is the owl as a sinner being dark

unclean creatures, therefore in a negative light. The concept of owls symbolizing the turning from
spiritual light is supported additionally through a passage from Dictionary of Symbolism: Cultural

derived from many factors including nocturnal habits, solitude, silent flight, and plaintive cry

A Bar At The Folies Bernre Summary
Humanities Mod 2 Benjamin Dyck Rasmussen College Author Note This paper is being submitted to
the Humanities course on 12/11/2017. A Bar at the Folies Bergère Artist: Edouard Manet (1832 83).
Subject: Suzon, according to the recollections of Manet s friends: a young woman who worked at the
Folies Bergère, one of the great Parisian cafés concerts , a kind of beer hall with music, circus acts and
other entertainment. Analysis: This painting, which was actually painted when Manet was critically ill,
upholds the artist s conflicting outlook. One approach at looking at this painting, shows it features a
modern locale in The Folies Bergere the most renowned and modern of Paris s cafe concert halls,
which was noted among many other things for its innovative electric lights. In addition, its brushwork
is Impressionistic and its framing has been swayed by the new art of photography. And another
approach, its meaning is totally opaque, even inexplicable, dealing as it does with a problem that
engaged Manet throughout his entire adult life: the relationship, in figurative painting, between
realism and illusion. Probably modelled on Las Meninas (1656), the enigmatic Baroque masterpiece
by Velazquez, the painting seems to be a straightforward frontal image of a barkeep serving behind her
counter, who peers out at us, the viewer/patron. Then we see the giant mirror behind her and the
confusing reflections it holds. The woman s reflection has been turned to the right; while in the

Parole Officers And The Prison System
The world we live is constantly changing whether we are on the streets or in the prison system.
Society doesn t understand that being in the prison is the almost the same as being on the streets. For
instance, there are inmates that sell drugs and rob and kill people and cover it up just as if
they were on the streets. There are correctional officers that work there, but they can t observe
everything that goes on in the prison system. This is one of the reasons that being a parole officer
would be a good job to have. The streets are already bad enough so taking some of the bad guys
off the streets can help get the community back under control. Parole officer not only help in the
streets the help in the court house. Parole officers can help the judge make decisions on what the
inmate should be given whether its freedom or jail time. Parole officers have allot of offenders to
keep in contact with when they have not had contact with the offender this becomes a violation
and their parole can be revoked. (https://pap.georgia.gov/parole violations revocations) In the
past few years I have seem allot of inmates in back in prison because they could not follow the
guidelines for parole and they were sent back to prison to finish their sentence. When an offender
applies for parole a form filled and sent to his counselor which sends it on to parole. When the
parole board looks at an inmate, they look at everything especially his disciplinary history this is

The Eugenics Movement Essay
In the 1920s, a company in New York started a movement known as The Eugenics Movement. The
idea of eugenics was eventually picked up by Germany, China, Peru, India and Bangladesh. The
movement is still in effect till this day; however, it is not as prevalent as it once was. The beginning of
the Eugenics Movement all started at Cold Spring Harbor, New York. The United States coined the
term Eugenics from Great Britain in the early 1900s. In the year 1910, a man by the name of Charles
B. Davenport founded the Eugenics Records Office (ERO). The funds for this building came from

The Cold Spring Harbor is the birth place of the American Eugenics Movement. In 1898, the building

extreme, which faced more towards immigration, in the American History. Another home that Cold

eventually these scenarios were forced on humans ( Learning from History: Long Island s Cold Spring

Eugenics professional. His ideology was that Eugenics should be used to keep the Survival of the
Fittest going. Defects are passed down through generation after generation by means of defective
genetics ( Forced Sterilization ). People believed plant and animal genes can be improved through
Natural Selection, they believe the same could be done with humans. The reproduction of the

Stereotypes Of Alienation
Musician Boyd Rice stated I never understood alienation. Alienation what? You have to be part of
something in order to feel alienated from it (World Famous Quotes). Rice s statement reveals that
humans are a part of certain cultures or societies yet feel as if they are not. On occasions, individuals
choose to be alienated from groups, but others are alienated against their will. Cultures and societies

The Effect of Visual Field Position and Type of Stimuli on...
Abstract
An experiment was conducted to test the effect of lateralization and congruency on reaction time to
name colors. This was done using a computer program provided by The University of Mississippi.
This effect is called the stroop effect. Results showed that it was neither lateralization nor congruency
had a significant effect on reaction time, but the interaction of these two variables that created a
significant change in the time needed to recognize colors. It is believed that this is due to the different
hemispheric functions of the brain. Studies that are similar to this in nature help to better understand
how the brain functions and it capabilities.

The time to name congruent stimuli should be faster then the time to name incongruent stimuli. The
time to name ink color will vary with both visual field position and type of stimuli. Time to name ink
colors for congruent stimuli should not vary much with visual field but the time to name ink color of
incongruent should increase as the stimuli gets color to the right visual field.
Methods
Participants
This study contained a total of fifteen students from the University of Tampa s upper level psychology
class. Thirteen of the participants were female and the remaining two were male. In addition to this
class thirty six students from other classes were also used in this study.
Materials
I Mac G3 computers and a program from Old Mississippi University were used to test the lateralized
Stroop effect from http://psychexp.olemiss.edu. The name of the actual program was the Lateralized
Stroop Experiment. The stimuli used by this program were colors that appeared laterally on a
computer screen. Not only did the colors appear laterally but in differing hemispheres on the computer
screen. The colors were in the form of written words. For example the word red was shown in green
font. This was be an example of an incongruent stimulus because the written color word did not agree
with the font color shown. An example of

Let It Rain Coffee
Let it Rain Coffee by Angie Cruz tells the story of a Dominican family s heartbreak, loss, dreams, and
memories that tie them to their past and future. In the novel, it intertwines back and forth between
New York in the 90 s and the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. Cruz shows the struggle of being a
Dominican immigrant in the U.S. and the hardship they face once they arrive. Some longing to go
back to their native homeland. Therefore, we see the aftermath of displacement in space on
immigrants, which have a permanent hold on families from generation to generation. In the novel, we
see Don Chan, Santo, and Bobby all longing to find their purpose and where they truly belong .
Flashbacks of Chan and Santo s past memories gives us a glimpse of the history of the Dominican

Summary Of John Howard s Response To The China Problem
Introducing the debate roughly, I shall present on how different governments, from Howard
government to Abbott government, respond to the China problem.
4.1.1 John Howard government and the development of the China question, 1996 2007
Although Howard introduced his response to the China problem during his election campaign, his
government first systemically present the problem in the 1997 Australia s Foreign and Trade Policy
White Paper entitled In the National Interests. Australia s national interests include pragmatically
grasping economic benefits; strengthening relations with the US, and obtaining an upper hand in
technologies and military forces in the next fifteen years; and contributing to regional peace and
stability, the basis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Politically, the paper argued for binding engagement. Australia attempted to promote the principle of
the rule of law in the region. Indirectly, Howard government projected soft power, favorably
intangible power of binding norms, to engage Asian powers, including China, shaping their policy
preference without coercion (Nye 2004: 5 6). Public diplomacy is also discussed in the paper as a way
to project Australia s attractive image for the 2000 Sydney Olympics (Commonwealth of Australia
1997a: 78). In addition, the paper presented clue showing Australia s determination to remains
politically close with the United States and economic close with China looking for the formation of ad
hoc issue based coalitions to show Australia s eagerness in issues actively involved (Commonwealth
of Australia 1997a: 50 51). Shortly, the 1997 Foreign and Trade Policy White Paper laid down Howard
government s grand strategy with two particular focuses on strategic implications of the rise of Asia,
arguing against the need to choose one side exclusively between American led Western camp and,
potentially in the future, Chinese led Asian camp. On the other hand, several

The Evolution Of Quality Management
I always enjoy reading about the history of something because it tends to show you the evolution of it.
In this case, the evolution of Quality is there. In the definition of quality in Chapter 2, Feigenbaum and
Crosby both state what they think is the contributing part of quality. Feigenbaum believes that meeting
the customers expectations is the key, while Crosby feels that if you put an impeccable product out,
then that s quality. However, Goetsch and Davis define a hybrid version of Feigenbaum and Crosby s
thoughts on Quality, which incorporate the constant change that is the customer. The customer is the
driving force that makes business produce goods and services. Each era in the history of quality has its
place. Lessons learned along the way have shaped where we are today Quality Management. In the
craftsmanship era, businesses had relationships with their small town customers who produced small
scale personable products or services that could be shared word of mouth. In order to take quality
business into the future there had to be major changes if companies were going to be able to produce
quality on the global scale. Quality managers tried everything from getting the employees to believe in
their work, receive awards, and incentives to do more with less. The history of Quality Management
has driven goods and services to be great, and change with the customers expectations which continue
changing.
Chapter 3: Quality management encompasses a combination of

What Does The One Ring Symbolize
J.R.R. Tolkien s Lord of the Rings
One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the Darkness bind them
(Tolkien, The Two Towers 233)
One of the masters of British Literature, J.R.R. Tolkien was able to create a fantasy world with an
endless supply of parallelisms to reality. The fantasy world was found in the Lord of the Rings.
Tolkien is able to create wonderful symbolism and meaning out of what would otherwise be
considered nonsense. He creates symbolism and meaning by mastering his own world and his own
language. To understand the symbolism of The Ruling Ring, or The One Ring, one must understand
the events, which take place from the time of the ring s creation until the time ... Show more content

And while he wore the One Ring he could perceive all the things that where done by means of the
lesser rings, and he could see and govern the very thoughts of those that wore them. (Tolkien, The
Silmarillion 589)
The people recognize the power of the One Ring as soon as Sauron puts the One Ring on his finger.
They realize that he can control their thoughts. This makes the people decide to remove their rings and
never use them. The people and Sauron become bitter enemies while the One Ring remains in Sauron
s possession. The One Ring is lost in the river when Isildur defeats Sauron. After passing through
many hands, the One Ring is given to Frodo Baggins. This brings us to the beginning of the Lord of
the Rings.
The nature of the One Ring can be explained in three distinct ways. The One Ring is a personification
of Sauron s power. It is a symbol of evil in general. It also is an object with a mind of its own.
As the One Ring s creator, Sauron had placed a great amount of his own power into the ring for the
purpose of controlling the other rings. The ring is an extension of Sauron s power. The loss of the ring
does not destroy Sauron. Only the destruction of the One Ring can destroy Sauron. His power simply
becomes spread around, and his influence affects whoever has possession of the ring. If Sauron gets
the ring back, his power will be greater than ever. If he recovers it, then he will command them all
again, wherever they be,

The Tempest Critical Analysis
The Tempest is about an ousted Duke of Milan ,Prospero, who has been living in exile on a remote
island for the past twelve years with his daughter Miranda. He is a powerful magician, who happens to
be the master of Ariel and Caliban, and a guy who really likes his books. When Prospero s enemies
wash up on shore, he uses his black magic to seek revenge and restore himself to power. The Tempest
belongs to the genre of Elizabethan romance plays. It combines elements of tragedy with those of
romantic comedy, and like one of Shakespeare s plays previously, it asks deeper questions that are not
completely resolved at the end. The tone that seeps into the play is one of wonder, amazement, and
admiration. Mystery is still present , but the magic performed is not black and scary. The version that
seems to grasp my attention more, would have to be the Utah Valley University interpretation because
it takes Shakespeare s main purpose and tone but shows it in its own unique way. Furthermore, with
its silly drunkards, the play has a certain lightness to it and even the so called killers of the King tell
hilarious jokes and are lighthearted. But there is also the tone of revenge and reconciliation in the play.
We feel a revenge burning in Prospero while, at the same time, a wish for forgiveness and
reconciliation with those who have wronged him.
The Balinese production has a magical and mystical tone and is all caused by the effects the director
decided to use to help make the tone

hunger and homelessness of displaced children throughout South Florida and the islands of the

usually delayed due to processing constraints, many families could go without immediately needed
resources such as food and baby items for days. The setting up of an organized Pantry would be a stop

The World Of Yesterday, By Anthea Bell
Stefan Zweig s The World of Yesterday originally published in 1942 and translated into English in
2009 by Anthea Bell is a perceptive memoir that skillfully recounts the life of Zweig (a Jewish middle
class male) beginning with his childhood in Vienna, Austria pre World War I and ends right before
Zweig s suicide in 1942. During his account, Zweig provides critical commentary on various historical
events that is invaluable when it comes to putting these events in the context of the everyday life of
the individuals living through them. He also provides accounts of many societal structures as well as
of interesting individuals that are not necessarily important in the grand scheme of things but help the
reader build a more complete picture of the period. Throughout the book, Zweig maintains a
cautionary as well as a didactic tone that attempts to caution the reader about how society can change
so drastically and rapidly. Overall, Zweig s book is an excellent memoir that helps put major historical
events into context; however, the book also has some problems that undermine the delivery of the
cautionary message of the book. This book is a memoir by Stefan Zweig that recounts his life and
critically analyses some of the major world events that Zweig lived through. The setting at the
beginning of the book is Vienna, Austria in the Pre World I years, by the end of the book the setting
has changed many times because the author travels throughout Europe namely to Paris, Berlin,

Introduction. Women Across The World Struggle To Make Their

oppression. Feminist theorists like West and Zimmerman, MacKinnon, and Smith defend women s

Body of Analysis To begin understanding the rise of women s roles in Japan, we must first analyze the
importance and impact of gender roles, politics, and conflict in Japanese culture. Typically, men have
dominated leadership roles in Japanese society for centuries and women have only now begun to make
an appearance in such influential positions. The voices of powerful women are finally being heard.
Women such as the first female governor Yuriko Koike, the first female Democratic Party leader
Renho Murata, and the female defense minister Tomomi Indada are using their positions to encourage
and promote a change for women in political occupations of leadership in the country (Hu 2017).
Women s rights for equality has slowly become a social fact in Japanese society as women are
overcoming cultural boundaries in order to achieve political, social, and economic status never open to
women before. Durkheim s social fact is the collective consciousness of cultural and social norms
understood by a society (Durkheim 20131). Women have taken the initiative and begun reaching for
leadership positions across Japan, expressing their desire to make a change in society (Hu 2017).
Commonly, women in Japan experience a life that is influenced by the social norms established in
society by men. Women were told, by influential male leaders, to remain

The Weird Is An Essential Horror Component
As a genre, the weird is an essential horror component that is used to convey points and ideas that
regular Gothic monsters cannot. Dracula is not the fatalistic manifestation of there is nothing you can
do to change the world that Cthulhu is, and cannot be made into one. When the monsters are tangible,
they are understandable. They have a weakness, they can be conquered by humanity and have the
world return to a relative normal. The weird can convey the extremes in ways tangible monsters
cannot, and make a statement on the world that the Gothic is too limited to address completely. Both

good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and revelling in

This shows how Lovecraft sees the world, using the elder gods as a tangible metaphor for his nihilistic
view of life and its meaning, or lack thereof. In a cosmic sense, the monster is unimportant, adding
another layer of merit to Lovecraft s argument. If the mighty Cthulhu is a simple extraterrestrial being
that happened to find Earth and build a city on it, what is his purpose? What does he worship, fear,
love? Even the world ending, miles tall, progeny of Earth s ambivalent horror has no purpose or drive
beyond staying in his endless cycle, dreaming in R yleh.
Gilman is much more positive than Lovecraft, in a way. She does not see the world as inherently

and medical practices meant to deprive the patient of mental activity. The Yellow Wallpaper is her take

The Sukuma people of northwestern Tanzania, resting on the southern shore of Lake Victoria, have

of the impacts of globalization and the involvement of European countries with fisheries along the

Background and Overview
First, according to Jenkins (1996) culture profile of the Sukuma people, the group has lived in their
current area of Tanzania since 1300 CE. During the first millennium, there were vast migrations of
early Bantu speaking people, and this is likely where the Sukuma culture is rooted from. As of 2005, it
is estimated that there are around 5.5 million Sukuma people, and they are thought to account for up to
90% of the population in the city of Mwanza (Jenkins 1996), which has a population of around 2.8
million. In addition to being the most prominent group of Mwanza, they are also the largest ethnic
group in Tanzania. Some Sukuma live in the infamous Serengeti Plain, and in Shinyanga, and some
have migrated further south into various other areas. The Sukuma speak a Bantu language that is
similar to the national language of Tanzania; Swahili, although it is tonal making it differ from Swahili
(Jenkins 1996). The Sukuma have historically relied on agriculture, and the women do the majority of
the work for the family. Sukuma farmers grow crops such as cotton, cassava, rice, and peanuts

Having discussed the Broken A , one must now try to define and understand the Broken B , case in

with the squire, that the knight is also a servant. The knight is a servant of God. This brings into
account the first aspect of the Broken B , religiousness and choice. For Kierkegaard and Judge
William, the character and narrator of B , religiosity and ethical choice come hand in hand. Choose

with the idea that ethical choice can be made only through these means. If that is the case for the B ,
then the knight will only continue to suffer. For the knight, who cannot escape the trap of brokenness
he is sharing with the squire, this has profound implications. If the knight is constantly questioning his

How is social marketing different
The initial formal definition depicts social marketing as ...calculated to influence the acceptability of
social ideas and involving considerations of product planning, pricing, communication, distribution
and marketing research (Kotler and Zaltman, 1971, p. 5 in Andreason 1994, p. 109). In Marketing
Social Marketing in the Social Change Marketplace Andreasen argues that the given definition does
not outline the essence social behavioural change. In his words, the acceptance of an idea alone does
not guarantee the success of influencing behaviour. The latest interpretation of The International
Social Marketing Association solves that problem by stating the outcome explicitly. (2013).

For instance, in Scotland drinking alcohol is forbidden on public places, buying drinks is overly
expensive and restricted to specific hours. In this regard, while the technological approach consists of
using modern means for reducing the need or the consequences of drinking (e.g. remote access to
treatment, non
alcoholic beer), the economical solution is to raise the raise the private cost of drinking
alcohol.
On the other hand, social marketing recognises that we are self serving beings and, therefore, the
approach to a problem should be consumer centred. To put it more simply, the best way for me to
achieve what I want is to assure you that it is in your best interest (Marketing Theory, p. 310, 2003).
As a result, the question asked by marketers is shifted from what is wrong with these people, why won
t they understand? to what is wrong with us. What don t we understand about our target audience? ( A
Synopsis of Social Marketing , 1999).
The more recent change in thinking was achieved by applying the social exchange theory (Housten
and Gassenheimer, 1987) to social marketing. The conclusion of Hastings and Saren (2003) is that
change in social behaviour requires beneficial output in return. The resulting problem is that in social
marketing the benefit is not always apparent or at least not immediately. For

An Influential Psychologists Of All Times
One of the most influential psychologists of all times is Burrhus Frederic Skinner, also known as B. F.
Skinner, who was born on March 20, 1904 in a small town called Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. B. F.
Skinner was raised in a warm and wealthy home. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a stay at
home mom. In Skinner s early childhood, it was noted that he and his younger brother, Edward James,
liked to build things such as arrows and shack in the woods, to name a few ( ). These construction
skills would enable an older Skinner to build the equipment invented for his psychology research. As
he grew up, he went through all twelve grades at the same school, graduating with less than eight
students. Within these years, he developed an interest in art and literature through drawing and later
reading Shakespeare (Dews, 1970).
In Skinner s higher education, he attended Hamilton College in New York, where he majored in
English Literature to become a writer ( ). Soon after college, Skinner tried to write his first
psychological novel but failed to do so because of family trouble and lack of success. After becoming
discontent with his literary skills, and inspired by John B. Watson and Ivan Pavlov s Behaviorism, he
obtained a degree in psychology from Harvard University in 1928. Soon after, Skinner graduated with
his PhD from Harvard in 1931, which led him to the development of his influential operant
behaviorism ( ).
B. F. Skinners had many contributions within in his

A Typical Government Classroom Within Virginia...
A typical Government classroom in Virginia incorporates a multitude of different personalities and
learning styles. This classroom is not much different. There are the typical four walls, windows for
daydreaming, a white board, and a projection screen. Inside this classroom is where magic begins to
happen and children begin to blossom and prepare for life as an adult. Children become aware of their
surroundings both in school and as a citizen of not only the United States, but the World.
Relationships are created and nurtured to attempt to propel students to the next level of learning, yet a
fact remains. Some students are still failing to succeed at making the connections between concepts
and reality that is required to be an integral ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The classroom also contains a technology cart filled with 30 MacBook Pro laptops for student use. In
the back of the classroom is a bulletin board that illustrates different major concepts and relationships
of current material to the overall concepts of democracy. On the wall, an observer would find a
Classroom Constitution. This lays the foundation of behavioral expectations. Liberty High School also
participates in a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports system which is a system to encourage
and reward positive behaviors as well as provide systematic consequences for poor behaviors. The
classroom management in the classroom is a four step approach that begins with verbal redirection,
then proceeds with a warning to cease inappropriate activity, followed by removal from activity and
parent contact, then an office discipline referral if all other measures fail to end negative behaviors.
Overall, students show respect to the instructor, and work on assignments and activities with only
minor behavioral issues.
Student Characteristics Three students were chosen out of a group of nineteen students with a wide
range of ability. Twenty six percent of the class receives special education services, while sixteen
percent of the class is gifted. This leaves fifty eight percent of the students in the government class on
an average level of academic

Aeneas Quotes
This first passage is Aeneas going to the Underworld and speaking with his father, Anchises. Anchises
shows Aeneas the souls who will have yet to drink from the Lethe and come to life, these souls are
important because they are both Aeneas descendants and the future of Rome. While pointing out the
future sons to come, including Procas, Romulus, and Augustus, Anchises tells his son that all of these
descendants will achieve and conquer by saying: famous names someday, now places without names
and beyond our familiar stars, beyond the yearly path of the sun, to the land where Atlas turns the star
studded sphere on his shoulders (6.945 947). The second important passage that depicts the future of
Rome can be found towards the end of eighth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Catiline is dutiful as well but as Sallust tells us these duties is tainted with its intent and motives.
Catiline s sense of duty is focusing on serving himself instead of the valued Roman sense of duty
where the good of the state, city or empire is meant to benefit instead of an individual. Sallust
provides an example of this selfishness that Catiline displays a covetous of others possessions, he was
prodigal of his own; he was violent in his passions. He possessed a certain amount of eloquence, but
little discretion. His disordered mind ever craved the monstrous, incredible, gigantic (5.4 5). Instead of
acting for the best of the whole state, Catiline is greedy for what others have as well as spending his
own wealth in a reckless and extravagant manner. Sallust goes on to hint that it would be somewhat
more acceptable if Catiline were trying to hide his unacceptable behavior and actions but instead his
conspicuous manner makes his actions that much worse and unacceptable. In short this quote shows
how Catiline is dutiful to his desires and self gain at the expense of others. This idea of duty is seen
and labeled throughout Virgil s works with Aeneas is referred to as the pious Aeneas meaning the
dutiful Aeneas. This sense of duty that Aeneas has to Rome and the will of the gods and

Analysis Of Argument Against Headphones By Virginia Heffernan
Analysis of Argument Against Headphones A century has passed since the creation of headphones, yet
they have only recently come under fire. Headphones provide a way for people to listen to music,
audiobooks, and podcasts privately without disrupting others around them. However, all of this private
listening may soon fall on deaf ears. In Virginia Heffernan s article Against Headphones , she presents
an argument stating that although headphones are useful in some professions, they cause substantial
hearing loss, especially in young people. The formulated argument is effective and valid, and
incorporates ethos, logos, and opposing viewpoints with rebuttals.
Ethos
Heffernan establishes her credibility as an author by quoting and ... Show more content on

Heffernan also illustrates how headphones work, stating, when an audio current passes through the
device s voice coil, it creates an alternating magnetic field that moves a stiff, light diaphragm
(Heffernan, 2011). Describing the history of headphones and how the technology works portrays
Heffernan as a reasonable author with a deep understanding of her subject matter, which earns the
trust and respect of the audience.
Logos
Incorporating logical appeals into her writing allows Heffernan to reach a larger audience by
providing factual support as backing for the argument. The author writes, the number of teenagers
with hearing loss... has jumped 33 percent since 1994 (Heffernan, 2011). By using a statistic as a
logical premise in support of prohibiting headphones, the author sheds light on the harsh reality of
headphone use: more young people experience hearing loss. When discussing the history of
headphones, the author states, workers and soldiers have long used [headphones] to mute out the din
of machinery or artillery while receiving one way orders from someone with a microphone
(Heffernan, 2011). Heffernan recognizes a factual use of headphones while at the same time
acknowledging that headphones are useful in some instances, which helps to strengthen her argument.
Heffernan then goes on to say, headphone users who listen to

Who Is The Captain Of Industry Dbq
Robber Barons In the new industrial age, people such as Andrew Carnegie and JD Rockefeller played
a key role industrializing America. They paved the way for future industry with their creativity and
ambition (Document C 2, historian B, 1953). The United States would not be as technologically
advanced if these poeple didnt come up with the stratigies that they did. Carnegie was thought to be
the industrail hero of the time, while Rockefeller was thought to be the Oil hero. Although they
created the baseline to all industrial essentials, these poeple were indeed corrupt. These so called

Daniel And The Lion s Den
Recently, in my high school class the teens and I went through a study of the first six chapters of
Daniel. As often happens when studying a Biblical character we began to feel as though we knew
Daniel personally. Through the text we were able to sympathize with his struggles, admiring his
character, and marvel at his ability to serve God no matter the political environment. Whether the king
said, Truly, your God is God of gods, or the king considered himself to be the god Daniel s work did
not change. Of course, he lived in a sinful world and worked for pagan kings. However, Daniel never
bent when it came to serving our God.
Daniel s character and dedication to the Lord stands out particularly in my favorite Bible lesson from
my childhood, Daniel and the lion s den. However, through only hearing a simple summarization of
the account I missed details that the Holy Spirit purposefully brings out. These details paint a
description of Daniel and challenged myself as well as my class.
Through reading Daniel chapter 6 the reputation that Daniel had for serving the God leaped off the
pages. Daniel s adversaries knew what kind of character Daniel had. They also realized he was a man
who placed God s Law above all other powers. They knew Daniel dedicated himself to pray God and
no matter what and that he would not discontinue his commitment.
Daniel was committed. He was the marathon runner who does a 12 miler in the sleet. Daniel was the
season ticket holder that

It uses the mesh topology for transmitting data. This way it offers a secure way for communicating
wirelessly with a number of other such devices.
The research project is aimed at studying ways in which this new technology is helpful for day to day
communication needs. It focusses on the potential benefits that can be reaped by following this
standard for wireless connectivity. The cons related to it need to be understood thoroughly so that it
can be improved in its coming versions so that we may progress more in the wireless communication
domain. Since it is based upon Layer 1 and part of layer 2 OSI Model, it may prove further useful to
connect a number of devices.
3. TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
The ZigBee technology, has different subdivisions and names and works on the several layers of the
OSI model, each having a different name and a distinguished function. This paper focuses on the first
two layer of the OSI which is responsible for point to point connectivity. The ZigBee technology has
an embedded set of features, which can be applied to a wide variety of consumer, commercial and
industrial applications. ZigBee builds upon the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, and provides low cost
solutions to short distance communications meant mainly for Personal Area Networks. It is in some
ways similar to the Bluetooth Technology. This IEEE standard provides characteristics for Low Rate
Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR WPAN). The

  • 2. Experimental Study On Strength And Workability Of Cement... EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON STRENGTH AND WORKABILITY OF CEMENT MATERIALS USING MAGNESIUM SILICATE HYDRATE BINDER SYSTEM H. M. Tran, A. Scott 1,2University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand There has been increasing studies on magnesium silicate hydrate binder system as an eco cement and its potential use for nuclear waste immobilization. The cementing properties and workability of cement paste and mortar using magnesium silicate hydrate binder were examined by compressive strength, flow test and scanning electron microscopy. The binder composition was proposed based on stoichiometric ratio. The results showed that magnesium silicate hydrate binder exhibits very high water demand due to containing high microfine content of amorphous silica (silica fume). However, it is possible to produce workable mixes at normal water to binder ratio (w/cm=0.40 and below) by use of polycarboxylate based superplasticizer. Crushed quartz with smooth texture and particle size coarser than magnesium and silica fume was used as fillers to form ternary system. Use of crushed quartz fillers contributes to water reduction and improves packing density, hence increases strength of magnesium silicate hydrate binder system. Mortar samples of the binder containing 40% magnesium oxide, 40% silica fume (Mg/Si molar ratio = 1.50) and 20% crushed quartz fillers resulted in encouraging compressive strength of up to 70 MPa. • 3. Descartes Discourse on Method Understanding Descartes Method of Doubt Clear your mind, if you will, of everything you have ever seen or known to be true. To begin understanding Rene Descartes method of doubt, you need to suspend all prejudice and prior judgments and start with a clean slate for the purpose of discovering some ultimate truth on which to base all thought. (Kolak, Pg.225). Discouraged with much skepticism from his own beliefs, Descartes was embarrassed of his own ignorance. He set out to try and accomplish the task of finding an absolute truth in which he would base his beliefs. Placing upon himself a task to find an axiom or absolute truth to base all thought, he ventured as a youth in travel to collect a variety in experiences to derive some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He basically states in his meditations that if there is a God, and he is perceived as good, why would he deceive our thoughts? This brings up the evil deceiver argument. If we can only know that our existence is real, who is to say that there is not an outside force that makes of the rest of our reality that we supposedly live? If our dreams are just distorted pieces of our reality and our reality is merely a show put on by the evil deceiver, we know for certain we cannot base our beliefs on what we see and the tools unto which we use to perceive it; i.e. extension, hands, and eyes. Conclusion Descartes makes it clear that we cannot be certain of anything. The method of doubt brings us to understand this better by giving a set of guidelines to follow to systematically understand and get closer to some kind of truth. By trying to find some truth to base all thoughts on, Descartes tried to find an absolute truth by coming to the realization that nothing he believed was of any truth. Although not finding much truth in his journeys, he found a systematic way to come closer to finding truth. Descartes was presented with a problem of not knowing anything, and by creating the method of doubt he came closer to finding the truth. Works Cited Page Durant, Will Ariel. (1961). • 5. Visual Representations Of Maori Women Essay This essay examines visual representations of Maori women within the photographic domain. I will examine and compare three examples of how Maori women were represented within the European domain in the early twentieth century paying particular attention to the research done by Jacqui Sutton Beets in her book ?Bitter Sweet: Indigenous women in the Pacific?. Investigating the meanings and functions based on the ideologies of the time as well as the importance these representations have held within a social and cultural context for Maori Women and cultural identity. In comparison I will also examine two Maori artists that have represented Maori women within the contemporary domain and how the codes and conventions used in portrait photography have transformed the stereotype construct of early colonial imperialism. Early representations of New Zealanders are often associated with the notions of hardworking, no.8 wire thinking people that live in an untouched natural environment. These generalisation?s stem from stereotypes that derived from the pioneers who came to New Zealand and colonized an undiscovered land and developed a nation. Arguably this is the western view of what New Zealand identity is. Social change over time has seen New Zealanders transform from a nostalgic L P commercial (which ironically mainly show white men) into a multi cultural, sophisticated, adventurous people or as Prime Minister John Key has been quoted ?loyal and proud?. Assess whether or not the changes in the structure of the UK industry have been beneficial for the economy, industries and the consumer. Over the past 30 years the structure of the UK economy has been transformed. By this I mean there has been changes in the production and employment between the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. In 1964, 1,201,000 people were employed in the primary sector. By 1995 there were only 383,000 people employed in the primary sector. This shows a decrease of 818,000 employees over 31 years. This was mainly due to a contraction of output in the coal mining industries, and the collapse of oil prices in 1986, further contributing toward the declining industry. The second change in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to this limited availability there was a sharp increase in price, causing the demand to fall, and the demand for substitutes to increase. As a result there was a decline in output and employment. A prime example is steel, the substitute being aluminium. International competition had a dramatic affect on UK structure. Changing consumer tastes, the creation of new products and the changing comparative costs result in the redistribution of economic activity around the world. For example the Japanese were able to produce more reliable motorcycles at a cheaper cost and therefore there was a decline in the UK motorcycle industry, because Japan had a comparative advantage. The membership of the EU meant some inevitable restructuring of the UK economy, in accordance with European comparative advantages, as there were no trade restrictions within the EU (free trade, no import duties). This lead to an increase in economic activity in the tertiary sector for the UK, where it has a comparative advantage in banking and finance, (due to specialisation). The maturity argument states that our changing economic structure simply reflects the changing pattern of demand that follows from economic development. This statement argues that consumer demand in a mature economy such as the UK shifts away from goods and towards services. The capital stock in the UK grew more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first part of the essay is an evaluation of the weaknesses and strengths of a Task Based Learning (TBL). Second part of the essay is a self reflection on my peer teaching lesson and how I could apply in practice the Presentation, Production, Practice (PPP) teaching strategy and how to improve my teaching skills. Firstly, the positive parts of the TBL lesson, the Teacher (T) was leading the lesson by concentrating on the local needs of the Learners(L) (Tarone and Yule, 1990). Furthermore, near to the end of the class the T could not balance the interaction between herself and the Ls and it led to a diverted situation which expanded the Teacher Talking Time (Stewick, 1980). Following strategies, I learned during the observation that the best way is to shorten the controlled practice to use more talking tasks. During the preparation of the lesson, T need to keep the attention of the Ls, and give clear instructions, use tools such as pictures and the writing on board because they would lose motivations to do the task easily. Also, during the activity, the T s role is to monitor how the L could work together in groups and individually. The most practical way of the seating is the horseshoe arrangement (Gower, Phillips, and Walters, 2014). In order to identify our strengths and weaknesses of our teaching skills, each member of the class participated in a 10 minutes peer teaching lesson. As a general, Sulla lead Roman armies to many victories. As a politician he became a powerful dictator and yet was responsible for bringing about many reforms. This essay will prove how he was a great dictator, politician and general, through discussing his background, his military and political career, his dictatorship, and his accomplishments in his later years. The following year Sulla ran and was elected as praetor, the second highest position in the Roman republic. After his term of praetor was up, he returned to the battle field. This time it was against Mithridates, King of Pontus. Sulla did not have a full army with him so he had to recruit soldiers from Roman allies. His ability to get these soldiers and to push Mithridates back, shows his great military skills. This campaign was also important because it brought Rome into contact with the powerful Parthia Empire. He was able to arrange a treaty with Parthia, which was a milestone for Sulla. This would not be the last time he would meet Mithridates in battle. Soon Sulla and Marius again had to forget there many differences to defend Rome against Allied Italian forces who had declared war on Rome. They had set up their own government and were preparing to become an independent nation. This war was known as the Social War because the Latin name for Roman allies was socii. It was ended by a more important conflict, the invasion of a Roman province in Asia Minor by Mithridates. The Romans and the Italians signed a peace treaty in 89 B.C. Soon the main focus for Rome was Mithridates of Pontus in the east. In 88 B.C. Sulla was elected consul. The Senate also named him commander of the forces against Mithridates. From the original traditional values to those wild and free spirits that dominated the culture in the seventies, since then women and their rights have changed. The improvement of women s rights began back when Republicans first began to work on the Fifteenth amendment, this amendment was ratified in 1870 and it made the denial of voting due to race, illegal. The most common ways women of different ethnicities were held back were by being barred from certain jobs. Black, and Latina women were not allowed to work in the southern textile industry, or hold a secretarial job like many white women did. Instead they were forced to become maids, and laundresses. (Schaller 594) Another example of the lack of improvement for women in minorities is the percentage of young Italian girls who were withdrawn from school, in order for them to help support their family. Roughly 90% left school at the age of 14 to find work. (Schaller 629) Even though white women were steadily making progress towards equality with their own organizations, african american women did not see such immediate progress. So they decided to create their own similar groups such as the National Association of Colored Women. This group took its stance on it s own separate set of issues such as lynching, and defending the respect of black women. (Schaller 686) Ida B. • 15. Hieronymus Bosch Essay For my final project I chose to do a study on the artist Hieronymus Bosch, or more specifically I decided to focus on his use of owls in his various paintings. Bosch was a very interesting lad and his paintings lean toward the bizarre end of a normalcy spectrum. Individuals likeminded to Bosch fascinate me. My mind does not function or view things the same way and I find it very intriguing. I cannot even imagine what types of discussions (much less guess the probable subjects) Bosch would have had with his fellow artists in his time. A secondary reason I chose to explore the meanings behind the use of owls is because I have a personal fascination with owls. I already knew that owls are well known for their association wisdom, as well as the association with specific knowledge and erudition that can see through obscurity (and as the bird of Athena/Minerva, the goddess of wisdom), the owl appears frequently in the emblems of scholarly publishing houses and book stores (Biedermann, 250.) • 16. A Bar At The Folies Bernre Summary Humanities Mod 2 Benjamin Dyck Rasmussen College Author Note This paper is being submitted to the Humanities course on 12/11/2017. A Bar at the Folies Bergère Artist: Edouard Manet (1832 83). Subject: Suzon, according to the recollections of Manet s friends: a young woman who worked at the Folies Bergère, one of the great Parisian cafés concerts , a kind of beer hall with music, circus acts and other entertainment. Analysis: This painting, which was actually painted when Manet was critically ill, upholds the artist s conflicting outlook. One approach at looking at this painting, shows it features a modern locale in The Folies Bergere the most renowned and modern of Paris s cafe concert halls, which was noted among many other things for its innovative electric lights. In addition, its brushwork is Impressionistic and its framing has been swayed by the new art of photography. And another approach, its meaning is totally opaque, even inexplicable, dealing as it does with a problem that engaged Manet throughout his entire adult life: the relationship, in figurative painting, between realism and illusion. Probably modelled on Las Meninas (1656), the enigmatic Baroque masterpiece by Velazquez, the painting seems to be a straightforward frontal image of a barkeep serving behind her counter, who peers out at us, the viewer/patron. Then we see the giant mirror behind her and the confusing reflections it holds. The woman s reflection has been turned to the right; while in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For instance, there are inmates that sell drugs and rob and kill people and cover it up just as if they were on the streets. There are correctional officers that work there, but they can t observe everything that goes on in the prison system. This is one of the reasons that being a parole officer would be a good job to have. The streets are already bad enough so taking some of the bad guys off the streets can help get the community back under control. Parole officer not only help in the streets the help in the court house. Parole officers can help the judge make decisions on what the inmate should be given whether its freedom or jail time. Rice s statement reveals that humans are a part of certain cultures or societies yet feel as if they are not. On occasions, individuals choose to be alienated from groups, but others are alienated against their will. Cultures and societies both can give individuals a way to connect with one another but also can be a way of segregating others. The One Ring is lost in the river when Isildur defeats Sauron. After passing through many hands, the One Ring is given to Frodo Baggins. This brings us to the beginning of the Lord of the Rings. The nature of the One Ring can be explained in three distinct ways. The One Ring is a personification of Sauron s power. It is a symbol of evil in general. It also is an object with a mind of its own. As the One Ring s creator, Sauron had placed a great amount of his own power into the ring for the purpose of controlling the other rings. The ring is an extension of Sauron s power. The loss of the ring does not destroy Sauron. Only the destruction of the One Ring can destroy Sauron. When Prospero s enemies wash up on shore, he uses his black magic to seek revenge and restore himself to power. The Tempest belongs to the genre of Elizabethan romance plays. It combines elements of tragedy with those of romantic comedy, and like one of Shakespeare s plays previously, it asks deeper questions that are not completely resolved at the end. The tone that seeps into the play is one of wonder, amazement, and admiration. Mystery is still present , but the magic performed is not black and scary. The version that seems to grasp my attention more, would have to be the Utah Valley University interpretation because it takes Shakespeare s main purpose and tone but shows it in its own unique way. Furthermore, with its silly drunkards, the play has a certain lightness to it and even the so called killers of the King tell hilarious jokes and are lighthearted. But there is also the tone of revenge and reconciliation in the play. This occurs in the different spheres of life spanning from personal relations to different encounters that man has. The different associations we have been found to be instrumental in shaping up man s thoughts, as well as behavior and cognitions. Both behavior and cognition are two important aspects of social psychology, which discusses the human behavior in the various social settings. These researchers established that man has different characters that are influenced by the presence of other individuals. However, before a person experiences what the environment has to give, there are the preconceptions and opinions that people have about the reality, either based on reason or experience. People have prejudices that impact how they respond to the environment before it influences them. Therefore, persons have preconceptions and expectations about the reality of what the environment has to offer even before it influences them. People`s cognitive association makes them believe that they are real and justifiable despite their prejudices such as expectations of unfriendly environment that may not be based on experience or knowledge. Therefore, people can use their prejudices to shape the environment. For example, individuals may expect unfriendly environment, but they can utilize their characters to influence the people around them to behave in a friendly way. Specifically, in the case of Goetz, Gladwell describes Goetz is Surrounded on all sides by graffiti covered walls (233). According to this statement, Gladwell believes that the graffiti on the subways and buses greatly influenced the behavior of Goetz. Clearly, Goetz had a preconception that the place was unsafe because of the presence of the offensive graffiti. As a result, Goetz behavior was not purely influenced by the cognitive associations, but by both cognitive association and the environment. On the contrary, if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. The Broken A Having discussed the Broken A , one must now try to define and understand the Broken B , case in point, Antonius Block, the knight from Det sjunde inseglet. Initially, it should be noted, just as it was with the squire, that the knight is also a servant. The knight is a servant of God. This brings into account the first aspect of the Broken B , religiousness and choice. For Kierkegaard and Judge William, the character and narrator of B , religiosity and ethical choice come hand in hand. If these are true to the B , where the religiosity of the individual plays a part in their existence, and then added on top of that their ethics is connected to the religious as well, one ends up with the idea that ethical choice can be made only through these means. If that is the case for the B , then the knight will only continue to suffer. For the knight, who cannot escape the trap of brokenness he is sharing with the squire, this has profound implications. If the knight is constantly questioning his faith, he has come to a stalemate with his own thoughts, as he himself reflects in his confession ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the other hand, social marketing recognises that we are self serving beings and, therefore, the approach to a problem should be consumer centred. To put it more simply, the best way for me to achieve what I want is to assure you that it is in your best interest (Marketing Theory, p. 310, 2003). As a result, the question asked by marketers is shifted from what is wrong with these people, why won t they understand? to what is wrong with us. What don t we understand about our target audience? The resulting problem is that in social marketing the benefit is not always apparent or at least not immediately. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Skinner, who was born on March 20, 1904 in a small town called Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. B. F. Skinner was raised in a warm and wealthy home. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a stay at home mom. In Skinner s early childhood, it was noted that he and his younger brother, Edward James, liked to build things such as arrows and shack in the woods, to name a few ( ). These construction skills would enable an older Skinner to build the equipment invented for his psychology research. As he grew up, he went through all twelve grades at the same school, graduating with less than eight students. Within these years, he developed an interest in art and literature through drawing and later reading Shakespeare (Dews, 1970). In Skinner s higher education, he attended Hamilton College in New York, where he majored in English Literature to become a writer ( ). Soon after college, Skinner tried to write his first psychological novel but failed to do so because of family trouble and lack of success. After becoming discontent with his literary skills, and inspired by John B. Watson and Ivan Pavlov s Behaviorism, he obtained a degree in psychology from Harvard University in 1928. Soon after, Skinner graduated with his PhD from Harvard in 1931, which led him to the development of his influential operant behaviorism ( ). B. F. Skinners had many contributions within in his ... Catiline s sense of duty is focusing on serving himself instead of the valued Roman sense of duty where the good of the state, city or empire is meant to benefit instead of an individual. Sallust provides an example of this selfishness that Catiline displays a covetous of others possessions, he was prodigal of his own; he was violent in his passions. He possessed a certain amount of eloquence, but little discretion. His disordered mind ever craved the monstrous, incredible, gigantic (5.4 5). Instead of acting for the best of the whole state, Catiline is greedy for what others have as well as spending his own wealth in a reckless and extravagant manner. Sallust goes on to hint that it would be somewhat more acceptable if Catiline were trying to hide his unacceptable behavior and actions but instead his conspicuous manner makes his actions that much worse and unacceptable. In short this quote shows how Catiline is dutiful to his desires and self gain at the expense of others. Headphones provide a way for people to listen to music, audiobooks, and podcasts privately without disrupting others around them. However, all of this private listening may soon fall on deaf ears. In Virginia Heffernan s article Against Headphones , she presents an argument stating that although headphones are useful in some professions, they cause substantial hearing loss, especially in young people. The formulated argument is effective and valid, and incorporates ethos, logos, and opposing viewpoints with rebuttals. Ethos Heffernan establishes her credibility as an author by quoting and ... Heffernan also illustrates how headphones work, stating, when an audio current passes through the device s voice coil, it creates an alternating magnetic field that moves a stiff, light diaphragm (Heffernan, 2011). Describing the history of headphones and how the technology works portrays Heffernan as a reasonable author with a deep understanding of her subject matter, which earns the trust and respect of the audience. Logos Incorporating logical appeals into her writing allows Heffernan to reach a larger audience by providing factual support as backing for the argument. The author writes, the number of teenagers with hearing loss... has jumped 33 percent since 1994 (Heffernan, 2011). By using a statistic as a logical premise in support of prohibiting headphones, the author sheds light on the harsh reality of headphone use: more young people experience hearing loss. When discussing the history of headphones, the author states, workers and soldiers have long used [headphones] to mute out the din of machinery or artillery while receiving one way orders from someone with a microphone (Heffernan, 2011). As often happens when studying a Biblical character we began to feel as though we knew Daniel personally. Through the text we were able to sympathize with his struggles, admiring his character, and marvel at his ability to serve God no matter the political environment. Whether the king said, Truly, your God is God of gods, or the king considered himself to be the god Daniel s work did not change. Of course, he lived in a sinful world and worked for pagan kings. However, Daniel never bent when it came to serving our God. Daniel s character and dedication to the Lord stands out particularly in my favorite Bible lesson from my childhood, Daniel and the lion s den. However, through only hearing a simple summarization of the account I missed details that the Holy Spirit purposefully brings out. These details paint a description of Daniel and challenged myself as well as my class. Through reading Daniel chapter 6 the reputation that Daniel had for serving the God leaped off the pages. Daniel s adversaries knew what kind of character Daniel had. They also realized he was a man who placed God s Law above all other powers.
