Lean manufacturing is a production philosophy aimed at eliminating waste. It was pioneered in the 20th century by Toyota through the Toyota Production System. The goals of lean manufacturing are to improve quality, eliminate waste, reduce time, and reduce costs. There are seven types of waste including transport, inventory, motion, waiting, overproduction, over processing, and defects. To achieve a lean system, companies design simple manufacturing processes, recognize room for continuous improvement, and implement the Toyota Production System approach.
