10 Wicked Scenarios
For Leaders of Digital Schools
You are on a bus travelling at 50 miles per hour,
that will explode if it slows down.
Sandra Bullock is at the helm and you have highly
trained anti-terrorist skills. There are innocent
people on the bus with you, and you really really
want to get the man who did this.
 What do you do hotshot?
 What do you do?
1
Your school has recently had a problem with inappropriate social media posts from
student smart phones. The school has a Bring Your Own Device program and
students are allowed to use smart phones for learning purposes. The Board and
P&C are very concerned about this. They are also concerned about a recent ICT
audit that suggested a superficial approach to the use of technology in teaching
and learning. One board member, brought in PISA data which showed that ICTs
negatively impacted on mathematic skills. She wanted to know where the evidence
was that indicated ICTs improved student learning. The Board has raised the idea
of banning BYOD devices and returning to a more traditional classroom set up as
another school has done successfully. Politically, a return to basic skills agenda is
gripping the state after a decline in state-wide performances on NAPLAN tests.
Task: As the principal, respond to the scenario in a format that suits: e.g. from
direct verbal answer to role playing the scenario. In your response, address the
following:
• How would you approach the scenario?
• What measures or actions would you take? What evidence supports your action?
• How would you acknowledge the validity of the potentially opposing viewpoints?
• How would you approach the scenario strategically?
2
The System has announced it has a new virtual reality learning platform – Bobble.
Bobble, in partnership with Tesla, has transformed learning in Malaysia and
America. One feature of Bobble is that it allows the best teachers in the state to
teleport into any classroom. Another feature uses adaptive learning which allows
smart computers to know what each students needs to learn next. Bobble has also
been shown to reduce staffing in many schools. Regional schools are excited
because they can offer a broader range of subjects. A proposal has been put
forward that all system schools transition to Bobble in 18 months’ time. Bobble
hasn’t been tried in Australia and your School Executive are divided about its value.
Task: As the principal, respond to the scenario in a format that suits: e.g. from
direct verbal answer to role playing the scenario. In your response, address the
following:
 How would you approach the scenario?
 What measures or actions would you take? What evidence supports your
action?
 How would you acknowledge the validity of the potentially opposing
viewpoints?
 How would you approach the scenario strategically?
3
It’s mid-year, 2016, and you are mulling things over in your office. Your school is in
a leafy suburb and is well resourced. Recent NAPLAN and ATAR scores are on par
with other local independent schools and this is a source of pride for many
teachers. However, since the advent of your One to One program five years ago,
little has changed in the way teachers teach. You’ve discussed this with staff, and
sent a number to high profile conferences, but they feel the academic results speak
for themselves. Your students are generally very compliant but you sense you are
doing them a disservice. This was made clear to you recent when the gifted and
talented Year 9 group hacked into the school reporting system despite this not
being a part of the curriculum.
Task: As the principal, respond to the scenario in a format that suits: e.g. from
direct verbal answer to role playing the scenario. In your response, address the
following:
• How would you approach the scenario?
• What measures or actions would you take? What evidence supports you action?
• How would you acknowledge the validity of the potentially opposing viewpoints?
• How would you approach the scenario strategically
4
At the end of 2015, you lost your three teachers that drove ICT integration in
the school across maths, English and science. One fell ill, one fell pregnant
and one moved overseas. In 2016 you completed an ICT pedagogy audit and
noticed that the use of ICT was very superficial. YouTube was the most
widely used application in your school. You have provisioned all students and
teachers with a Microsoft Surface Pro PC/Tablet device with a stylus.
Task: As the principal, respond to the scenario in a format that suits: e.g.
from direct verbal answer to role playing the scenario. In your response,
address the following:
• How would you approach the scenario?
• What measures or actions would you take? What evidence supports your
action?
• How would you acknowledge the validity of the potentially opposing
viewpoints?
• How would you approach the scenario strategically?
5
The Director of ICT has never liked Apple products and has convinced his
team that they not suited to your school. The Director’s wife bought him a
copy of Steve Job’s biography but he has proudly refused to read it and
strangely is going through some tough times at home. Your savvy Deputy
Principal has a friend at Apple who has promised to help make the school an
Apple Distinguished school if classroom practices change. Apple has offered
their technical and pedagogical support to address issues at your school if
you change your devices next year. Roughly speaking, the budget for IT
would remain the same. What would you do?
Task: As the principal, respond to the scenario in a format that suits: e.g.
from direct verbal answer to role playing the scenario. In your response,
address the following:
• How would you approach the scenario?
• What measures or actions would you take? What evidence supports your
action?
• How would you acknowledge the validity of the potentially opposing
viewpoints?
• How would you approach the scenario strategically?
6
You’ve been lucky enough to land a position as the inaugural principal of
High Tech High, Western Australia, a Catholic campus focused on STEM.
Having impressed the interview panel immensely, they have asked you to
work with the architects to provision the school with the best technical
infrastructure to support your wonder vision:
Task: As the principal, respond to the scenario in a format that suits: e.g.
from direct verbal answer to role playing the scenario. In your response,
address the following:
• How would you approach the scenario?
• What infrastructure will your purchase? What software will you use?
• What measures or actions would you take? What evidence supports your
action?
• How would you acknowledge the validity of the potentially opposing
viewpoints?
• How would you approach the scenario strategically?
7
After a long struggle with integrating ICT successfully at your school,
you are the recipient of a LEAD award for innovation and are asked to
Keynote EduWhiZ conference in Adelaide, 2017. EduWhiz has had
some poor feedback from the 2016 conference and is low on numbers.
EduWhiZ are keen for you not to repeat the phrase 21st century
learning or talk about STEM.
• How would you approach the scenario strategically?
• What will your keynote focus on?
• Provide some lines from you speech
8
Your school is about to go one to one and you know a number of your teachers are
frightened because their knowledge and skills of ICT is lacking. Central office is too
busy to provide long term sustained support but you have been approached by a
provider who can provide “PD that transforms your school over 12 months”.
• How would you approach the scenario strategically?
9
The Director of Curriculum has come back from the International Society for Technology
and Education conference and after seeing a presentation on virtual data analytics has a
vision of himself as Tom Cruise in Minority Report (see YouTube or google it). Apparently,
if you get all your parents on to Bobble, the System that enables the analytics, in the
blink of a palm gesture you will be able to bring up a student’s profile and predict their
ATAR score. You will also be able to see which bus routes correlate with the highest
NAPLAN scores. The Director of Curriculum has few interests outside of work, leads the
musical and organises most the boring stuff that you don’t like doing. He is so excited by
Bobble and its potential you worry that he might join Bobble or a school using it if you
don’t get on board
Task: As the principal, respond to the scenario in a format that suits: e.g. from direct
verbal answer to role playing the scenario. In your response, address the following:
• How would you approach the scenario?
• What measures or actions would you take? What evidence supports you action?
• How would you acknowledge the validity of the potentially opposing viewpoints?
• How would you approach the scenario strategically?

Editor's Notes

  • #10 There is a long history of wanting technologies in the curriculum and its begins with the national goals for schooling which started in 1989, with the Hobart Declaration.
  • #11 A large part of the skill based of school is based on the notion of preparation for life. It’s important then that we get a sense of where that life is rapidly heading and the technological innovations of the present.
  • #13 The impact of these technologies on everyday life is massive. Ideas that “creatives” had in a flat in Silicon Valley, San Fran Cisco, have gone on to really shake up the world.
  • #14 The Digital Economy is massive and something that we have to take seriously as educators of the next generation
  • #15 There is a strong emphasis on technologies in the founding document for the AC, the Melbourne Declaration.
  • #16 It has been challenging to bring technologies into schools and we haven’t seen grade raw results from this.
  • #17 It has been difficult to shift the practices of some teachers and also made more difficult by sloppy implementation of technologies which had the effect of turning reluctant teachers right off.
  • #18 Let’s explore what the ICT capability is and where it fits.
  • #19 The Technologies curriculum may confuse some teachers but what is actually different about it?
