Chapter 29 Civil rights Period 3

The civil rights movement made progress through nonviolent protest and new laws, but was met with resistance and violence. Growing anti-war sentiment and unrest in 1968 led to assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy and riots at the Democratic National Convention, contributing to Richard Nixon's election on a message of restoring order.
Chapter 28 Period 3
After World War 2, the United States experienced unprecedented economic growth and rising standards of living. Factors fueling this growth included increased government spending, high birth rates during the postwar baby boom, and expanded industrial and consumer economies. New technologies like computers and medical advances improved lives. However, not all shared in prosperity as poverty remained entrenched, though the civil rights movement gained momentum through events like Brown v. Board of Education. Overall, this period saw dramatic social, economic and technological transformations that shaped modern America.
Chapter 27 Cold War Period 3
The Cold War began between the United States and Soviet Union after World War 2. Tensions arose due to differing ideologies around democracy, capitalism, and communism. The US pursued a containment policy to stop the spread of communism through measures like the Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, NATO alliance, and military buildup. The outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 further escalated Cold War tensions and fears of communism grew domestically in the US through investigations led by McCarthyism.
Progressive Presidents
The passage discusses three progressive US presidents from the early 20th century: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. The Harlem Renaissance • A new group of African-American intellectuals was forming a new type of culture in Harlem. • This brought jazz music to the mainstream with the opening of many nightclubs, such as the Cotton Club. • Such famous jazz musicians were Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, and Fletcher Henderson. • Harlem also became known for its theaters.

Creation of Mass Culture: Popular Magazines • Some magazines were directed to the rural South. • Ex: The Saturday Evening Post • Many other magazines were contemporary and wanted to be efficient and convenient for its readers. • Ex: The Reader’s Digest-1921-DeWitt and Lila Wallace Time magazine-1923-Henry Luce and Briton Hadden

Leisure Time, Sports, Amusement Parks, and National Parks • During the 1920s, most Americans were becoming preoccupied with consumerism and materialistic beliefs. • The advancement in the automobile allowed for a substantial amount of Americans to travel to new places. • As a result, Americans focused more on their leisure time than previous generations, which led to them going to sporting events, amusement parks, and national parks.
