2. • The Second World War brought fast paced music often
due to the depression that surrounded the war
• The music was one of the only ways of taking peoples
minds of it
• Dances include the boogie woogie or jitterbug
• Dances were held in a variety of places such as
churchs, clubs and village halls
3. • This was the era of rock and roll
• People would listen to this and this is when the concept
of rebellious teenagers dawned amongst the younger
generation
• The music had so much more expression and feeling
than anything they’d listened to before
• It was surprisingly popular in British society
4. • It was important to establish British youth and popular
music culture was a key factor in the developments that
led to the British Invasion of the mid- 1960’s
• Music used to be something before this point that would
merely be listened to but it was becoming bigger and
bigger like more of a brand people were paying far more
money to get what they wanted out of music e.g records
5. • The first big new sound of the 1970’s was ‘Glam Rock’
the main figures were David Bowie, Elton John & Gary
Glitter
• With the bleak political backdrop these British bands
brought a relief with their sequins, nail varnish and
colourful hair
• The punk movement was taking air and it involved epic
bands such as The Sex Pistols & The Clash
6. • In 1980’s the rise of hip hop and rap were occurring and
people were liking the new aggression that came with
this music, however this was more American based than
anything- however it largely grew on the British
• Grunge was something that was coming on the scene
however it was still small and a new concept to many
people
7. • Britpop and grunge (mainly in America) were now starting
to thrive
• Grunge was stuff like Nivarna which was making a
massive impact in the States but then the British came
back with something debatably more successful- Britpop
• These were some Britpop bands; Radiohead, Blur, Oasis,
Pulp & Massive Attack
